Student with different study backgrounds work together, simulating a small engineering consulting firm. Different aspects of a problem are regarded and a solution needs to be presented in a time-scope of 8 weeks. This project is often executed abroad. We took the opportunity to take this course and found a project in Buenos Aires, Argentina. During these two months we were able to apply our gained theoretical knowledge in a real time project setting. We experienced working and living in a in country with a significant culture difference. Argentina differs with the Netherlands in quite some areas, for example: Language, politics, economy and lifestyle. We had a great time being here working on the project as well as living in Buenos Aires. We would like to thank Ir. H.J. Verhagen (TU Delft) for getting us in touch with the University of Buenos Aires and for his project and content advise. Our supervisors, Eng. R. Escalante (Hídrovia S.A./UBA) in Buenos Aires, Ir. H. Verheij (TU Delft) and Prof. Ir. T. Vellinga (TU Delft) in The Netherlands, have been of great support providing the project group with advice and insights. We also had dinner with Dutch people in the Argentine water sector.

Anyone can be a mentor at sea and anyone can need mentoring – and it only takes 10 minutes to get started. This book explains how knowledge gained through experience, and then reflected upon, can be passed on in an informal but purposeful way. Every suggestion will take no more than 10 minutes to carry out but incorporating opportunities for mentoring into the daily onboard routine will widen and consolidate the on-the-job experience of those progressing through the ranks. It will also improve communications and enhance team-building and hopefully lead to a reduction in accidents and incidents. This practical guide sets the 10 minute challenge for potential mentors and candidates to identify concerns and practical solutions. The grounding of the Kathleen G in May and the Physalie in June both resulted from skippers falling asleep due to fatigue. “Fortunately no-one was injured in these accidents but our research shows fifty percent of seafarers were fatigued on at least one of their last five trips and already this year there have been five accidents where fatigue has been a major contributing factor,” says MSA Manager Strategic Analysis and Planning Sharyn Forsyth. “The fishing industry by nature has a highly demanding physical workload but not managing fatigue properly is clearly too great a risk to take.

Robin des Bois counted 293 vessels sold for demolition in 2006, 288 in 2007 and 456 in 2008. In 2009, 1,006 vessels have left the waters, representing more than twice the 2008 total and three times the 2006 total. The total weight of recycled metal reached more than 8.2 million tons, five times the total amount of 2006. During this record year the pace of vessels leaving the oceans during the summer months has barely slowed down. The worldwide financial crisis weighed considerably on trade exchange; big ship owners have massively sent for demolition their oldest ships to adapt to the dropping of freight rates and to draw benefits from their recent ships.
