West Bayshore Drive Traverse City, Michigan 49684 231-946-2647 [email protected] (c) Maritime Heritage Alliance 2011 1 1770's WELCOME History of the 1770's British Armed Sloop, WELCOME About mid 1700’s John Askin came over from Ireland to fight for the British in the American Colonies during the French and Indian War (in Europe known as the Seven Years War). When the war ended he had an opportunity to go back to Ireland, but stayed here and set up his own business. He and a partner formed a trading company that eventually went bankrupt and Askin spent over 10 years paying off his debt. He then formed a new company called the Southwest Fur Trading Company; his territory was from Montreal on the east to Minnesota on the west including all of the Northern Great Lakes. He had three boats built: Welcome, Felicity and Archange. Welcome is believed to be the first vessel he had constructed for his fur trade. Felicity and Archange were named after his daughter and wife. The origin of Welcome’s name is not known. He had two wives, a European wife in Detroit and an Indian wife up in the Straits. His wife in Detroit knew about the Indian wife and had accepted this and in turn she also made sure that all the children of his Indian wife received schooling. Felicity married a man by the name of Brush (Brush Street in Detroit is named after him). -

No.95 Recommendation for the Application of SOLAS (Oct 2007) (Corr.1 Regulation V/15 Mar 2009) (Corr.2 Bridge Design, Equipment Arrangement and July 2011) Procedures (BDEAP) Foreword This Recommendation sets forth a set of guidelines for determining compliance with the principles and aims of SOLAS regulation V/15 relating to bridge design, design and arrangement of navigational systems and equipment and bridge procedures when applying the requirements of SOLAS regulations V/19, 22, 24, 25, 27 and 28 at the time of delivery of the newbuilding. The development of this Recommendation has been based on the international regulatory regime and IMO instruments and standards already accepted and referred to by IMO. The platform for the Recommendation is: • the aims specified in SOLAS regulation V/15 for application of SOLAS regulations V/19, 22, 24, 25, 27 and 28 • the content of SOLAS regulations V/19, 22, 24, 25, 27, 28 • applicable parts of MSC/Circ.982, “Guidelines on ergonomic criteria for bridge equipment and layout” • applicable parts of IMO resolutions and performance standards referred to in SOLAS • applicable parts of ISO and IEC standards referred to for information in MSC/Circ.982 • STCW Code • ISM Code This Recommendation is developed to serve as a self-contained document for the understanding and application of the requirements, supported by: • Annex A giving guidance and examples on how the requirements set forth may be met by acceptable technical solutions. The guidance is not regarded mandatory in relation to the requirements and does not in any way exclude alternative solutions that may fulfil the purpose of the requirements. -

P a g e | 1 THE CUTTY SARK The “Cutty Sark” was a British clipper ship, aptly named of course as a [clipper for its speed1], which was built in 1869 on the [river Clyde in Scotland2] by the Jock Willis Shipping Corporation.3 It was primarily used to transport tea from China to Great Britain, as well to a lesser extent later in its life, wool from Australia;4 however, with the advent of the steam engines and the creation also of the Suez Canal in 1869, its days of operation as a sailing vessel were numbered, as the steam ships were now prevailing as technologically advanced cargo carriers through the shorter route by the Suez Canal to China. In fact, within a few years of its operation, as its delegation in the tea industry was declining, it was assigned primarily the duty of transporting wool from Australia to England, but this activity was thwarted again by the steam ships, as they were enabled by their technologies to travel faster to Australia. Eventually, the “Cutty Sark” in 1895 was sold to a Portuguese company called “Ferreira and Co.”, where it continued to operate as a cargo ship until 1922, when it was purchased on that year by the retired sea captain Wilfred Dowman, who used it as a training ship in the town of Falmouth in Cornwall. by June 21, 1982 You can stand on Cape Point at Hatteras on a stormy day and watch two oceans come together in an awesome display of savage fury; for there at the Point the northbound Gulf Stream and the cold currents coming down from the Arctic run head- on into each other, tossing their spumy spray a hundred feet or better into the air and dropping sand and shells and sea life at the point of impact. Thus is formed the dreaded Diamond Shoals, its fang-like shifting sand bars pushing seaward to snare the unwary mariner. Seafaring men call it the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Actually, the Graveyard extends along the whole of the North Carolina coast, northward past Chicamacomico, Bodie Island, and Nags Head to Currituck Beach, and southward in gently curving arcs to the points of Cape Lookout and Cape Fear. The bareribbed skeletons of countless ships are buried there; some covered only by water, with a lone spar or funnel or rusting winch showing above the surface; others burrowed deep in the sands, their final resting place known only to the men who went down with them. From the days of the earliest New World explorations, mariners have known the Graveyard of the Atlantic, have held it in understandable awe, yet have persisted in risking their vessels and their lives in its treacherous waters. Actually, they had no choice in the matter, for a combination of currents, winds, geography, and economics have conspired to force many of them to sail along the North Carolina coast if they wanted to sail at all!¹ Thus begins David Stick’s Graveyard of the Atlantic (1952), a thoroughly researched, comprehensive, and finely-crafted history of shipwrecks along the entire coast of North Carolina. -
