"BUILDING BOATING SKILLS" Speaker: New PTYC Members Jeff & Celine Smith

Jeff started sailing with his brother in San Francisco., when he was 5 years old. He took a variety of dinghy and keelboat, navigation, weather and other classes, started racing boats and in his 30's was racing 150-200 days a year. He built a catamaran in France, sailed it through the Med, across the Atlantic, through the Caribbean and the Panama Canal. He and Celine sailed in Tahiti and are planning a "post-Covid" charter in Croatia.

Celine started sailing on Jeff's catamaran in the Caribbean 20 years ago. She did a series of 600 mile deliveries, sailed extensively in Puget Sound, the San Juan and Canadian Gulf Islands ranging up to Desolation Sound. She took the PT Maritime Center's Woman Captain and loves taking the Maritime Center boats out for a sail. Be sure to make our Tuesday, October 13th ZOOM meeting to learn about Building Boating Skills.

Commodore’s Column (concludes): Staying Connected via ZOOM

For those of you who have not yet “zoomed,” at 6:30 pm you’ll simply click on the link in that email to be magically transported to the meeting. You will be greeted and placed in one of four “Cocktail Rooms” for socializing, hosted by our Board members. Pour yourself a drink and enjoy visiting with your PTYC friends. At 7 pm, I’ll return everyone to our main Zoom Room, and we’ll follow our normal agenda. We are excited to present new members, Jeff & Celine Smith, as our speakers to talk about their sailing adventures around the world.

I was pleased with our very first General Membership Meeting via Zoom on September 8th. We had 27 connected via Zoom, mostly couples, so nearly 50 in attendance. I’d love to see this grow so we can all stay connected during these difficult times of isolation. Please join us on Zoom and help your fellow PTYC members stay connected! Commodore Debbie

Recreational Boaters Association of Washington (RBAW) Report for October

Orcas on our Mind

Recently RBAW received a request by several environmental organizations to pass along their request that boaters take a voluntary pledge to keep at least 1,000 yards (1/2 nautical mile) away from the Southern Resident Orcas, especially now that three of the whales are pregnant and carrying calves. We wanted to provide to you this information on the “Take the Pledge” request as some of the background on what we at RBAW believe and have tried to do in respecting the Orca population and the health of our marine environment. As you may remember from previous RBAW posts in the Baggywrinkle, during the 2018 session of the Washington State Legislature, RBAW worked very hard with the Governor’s Office and other stakeholders on the passage of Senate Bill 5577 which requires that boaters observe new 300 minimum distances from Orcas – or 400 yards if a vessel is behind the Orcas. Prior law required a flat 200 yard buffer. This bill, now WA state law, also established a 7 knot go-slow zone within one-half nautical mile of the Orcas. Additionally it requires including this information in the state mandated curriculum used for residents to get their WA State Boater’s Ed card. We are sending you this information on the “Take the Pledge” request because we believe we have a due diligence obligation to keep you aware of and educated on issues that affect you as recreational boaters. We encourage you to take the actions you believe will be most effective in protecting these awesome creatures and the waters they call home. We at RBAW believe strongly in protecting Southern Resident Orcas (and all whales) and in maintaining a respectful distance from them.

PTYC Membership Did you know?

With a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wyoming, Craig Cholvin’s career involved field application work with engineers all over the world. During his 30s, he took an 8 month break to back-pack across the world with several people joining him for segments of his Although he grew up in Iowa, his family moved to the Seattle area, where he became familiar with the Northwest and Washington’s Salish Sea — one of the Top 10 Cruising Areas in the World!

Craig & Jess Growing up, Craig sailed a small sun-fish and later a Hobie 16. He loves sports and physically working out to meet their demanding challenges and required skills. In fact, besides skiing, he played ice hockey in Colorado and then in East Bremerton for well over 16 years. His sister introduced him to pharmacist, Stacy Olson, in Colorado 1999 and they were married in 2004. Stacy & Craig

Additionally, Craig developed construction skills and remodeled their Victorian home in Uptown—a six year project—where they met Carlyn Stark, who sponsored them in joining PTYC in 2011. He also completed a remodel of their home on Port Ludlow’s waterfront. After selling both houses, they chose a home in Kala Point—next door to PTYC members Gerry & Cindy Walsh—a home which did not need extensive remodeling. However, his construction skills did not retire, but have expanded to rehabbing sailboats—a Cal229, Princess Bride Halloween a Yamaha 33 and their current Catalina 387! Both Craig and Stacy have a Stacy aboard their Catalina 387

wonderful sense of humor and bring loads of fun to many PTYC meetings and events. Craig served as Treasurer for 2 years and is always there to lend a hand—especially tending the Clubhouse bar, when we gathered for events. But did you know . . . Every few years, a group of his high school friends meet to fix up a classmate’s 640 acre farm in Nebraska! In fact, he is there now! Ilona Bell, Editor Volume 120, Issue 8 Baggywrinkle Page 11

Gratitude Former PTYC Member Sheryl Kerkoff If you read a recent front page story of the San Francisco Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso and a line tugging in her mouth. A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her.

When she was free, the

divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to EACH and EVERY diver, one at a time, and nudged them . . . pushed them gently around . . . as if she was thanking them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The who cut the rope out of her mouth said her eyes were following him the whole time, and he will never be the same. May you, and all those you love, be so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you. And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude. I pass this on to you, my friends, in the same spirit. Page 12 Baggywrinkle October 2020

Tim & Alice Tibbals

We were wanting a boat with enough space to take family and friends with us. We love Sea Spirit and intend to rename her Salish Dream. We’ve dreamt of a boat to adventure the Salish Sea, but never really thought it could come to pass! Thanks to Painters and Rezinas for helping our dream become a reality!!

Dan & Linda Newland

We jumped from a sailboat to a Grand Banks 36, “Tsusiat” (silent T).

We looked a long time to find her, but wanted a boat that wasn’t on life support. She is well fit for extended cruising .

SEEKING SEEKING PARTNERSHIP 33' NAUTICAT PILOTHOUSE SAILBOAT We are looking for the right person(s) to share our 1985 33' Nauticat Pilothouse Ketch Sailboat! "Northern Comfort" is a true NW boat built for comfort and our unpredictable weather (inside and outside helms). She is currently at Port Hadlock, but will have the option of moving to a Port Townsend berth in the future. Our preference is for someone to take a 1/2 share, but we are open to other options. After an initial buy-in, each partner would equally share all maintenance, repairs and improvements, along with monthly or annual expenses.

We have been in boat partnerships before, and know what is required to have a successful partnership. We have also owned a number of boats before and know the required maintenance and upkeep. "Northern Comfort" is completely cruise-ready. She is well maintained, in superb condition, with lots of features and equipment to add to your sailing ease and comfort. For more photos and information please contact Jesse 619-246-6892 (text or call), or email me: [email protected]. Volume 120, Issue 8 Baggywrinkle Page 17
