He took a variety of dinghy and keelboat, navigation, weather and other classes, started racing sail boats and in his 30's was racing 150-200 days a year. He built a catamaran in France, sailed it through the Med, across the Atlantic, through the Caribbean and the Panama Canal. He and Celine sailed in Tahiti and are planning a "post-Covid" charter in Croatia. Celine started sailing on Jeff's catamaran in the Caribbean 20 years ago. She did a series of 600 mile deliveries, sailed extensively in Puget Sound, the San Juan and Canadian Gulf Islands ranging up to Desolation Sound. She took the PT Maritime Center's Woman Captain course and loves taking the Maritime Center boats out for a sail. Be sure to make our Tuesday, October 13th ZOOM meeting to learn about Building Boating Skills. Commodore’s Column (concludes): Staying Connected via ZOOM For those of you who have not yet “zoomed,” at 6:30 pm you’ll simply click on the link in that email to be magically transported to the meeting. You will be greeted and placed in one of four “Cocktail Rooms” for socializing, hosted by our Board members. Pour yourself a drink and enjoy visiting with your PTYC friends. At 7 pm, I’ll return everyone to our main Zoom Room, and we’ll follow our normal agenda. We are excited to present new members, Jeff & Celine Smith, as our speakers to talk about their sailing adventures around the world. I was pleased with our very first General Membership Meeting via Zoom on September 8th. We had 27 connected via Zoom, mostly couples, so nearly 50 in attendance. I’d love to see this grow so we can all stay connected during these difficult times of isolation. Please join us on Zoom and help your fellow PTYC members stay connected! We wanted to provide to you this information on the “Take the Pledge” request as some of the background on what we at RBAW believe and have tried to do in respecting the Orca population and the health of our marine environment. As you may remember from previous RBAW posts in the Baggywrinkle, during the 2018 session of the Washington State Legislature, RBAW worked very hard with the Governor’s Office and other stakeholders on the passage of Senate Bill 5577 which requires that boaters observe new 300 yard minimum distances from Orcas – or 400 yards if a vessel is behind the Orcas. Prior law required a flat 200 yard buffer. This bill, now WA state law, also established a 7 knot go-slow zone within one-half nautical mile of the Orcas. Additionally it requires including this information in the state mandated curriculum used for residents to get their WA State Boater’s Ed card. We are sending you this information on the “Take the Pledge” request because we believe we have a due diligence obligation to keep you aware of and educated on issues that affect you as recreational boaters. We encourage you to take the actions you believe will be most effective in protecting these awesome creatures and the waters they call home. We at RBAW believe strongly in protecting Southern Resident Orcas (and all whales) and in maintaining a respectful distance from them.
