  • Cilician Armenian Mediation in Crusader-Mongol Politics, C.1250-1350
HAYTON OF KORYKOS AND LA FLOR DES ESTOIRES: CILICIAN ARMENIAN MEDIATION IN CRUSADER-MONGOL POLITICS, C.1250-1350 by Roubina Shnorhokian A thesis submitted to the Department of History In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (January, 2015) Copyright ©Roubina Shnorhokian, 2015 Abstract Hayton’s La Flor des estoires de la terre d’Orient (1307) is typically viewed by scholars as a propagandistic piece of literature, which focuses on promoting the Ilkhanid Mongols as suitable allies for a western crusade. Written at the court of Pope Clement V in Poitiers in 1307, Hayton, a Cilician Armenian prince and diplomat, was well-versed in the diplomatic exchanges between the papacy and the Ilkhanate. This dissertation will explore his complex interests in Avignon, where he served as a political and cultural intermediary, using historical narrative, geography and military expertise to persuade and inform his Latin audience of the advantages of allying with the Mongols and sending aid to Cilician Armenia. This study will pay close attention to the ways in which his worldview as a Cilician Armenian informed his perceptions. By looking at a variety of sources from Armenian, Latin, Eastern Christian, and Arab traditions, this study will show that his knowledge was drawn extensively from his inter-cultural exchanges within the Mongol Empire and Cilician Armenia’s position as a medieval crossroads. The study of his career reflects the range of contacts of the Eurasian world. ii Acknowledgements This project would not have been possible without the financial support of SSHRC, the Marjorie McLean Oliver Graduate Scholarship, OGS, and Queen’s University.

Translations from Armenian into Italian, 1991 to date a study by the Next Page Foundation in the framework of the Book Platform project conducted by Sona Haroutyunian1 2012 1 Sona Haroutyunian is literary translator, Professor of Armenian Language and Literature at the University of Venice, Italy. This text is licensed under Creative Commons Translations from Armenian into Italian, 1991 to date Sona Haroutyunian, PhD University of Venice Ca’ Foscari [email protected] PART I Historical Overview The first reliable vestiges of an Armenian presence in medieval Italy are found in the Byzantine Exarchate of Ravenna. Some of these exarchs, like the famous Narsetes (Nerses) the Eunuch (541-568) and Isaac (Sahak) (625-644) were of Armenian origin. In this same period, the names of other Armenian leaders in Italy, under whose command fought numerous Armenian soldiers, are also remembered. In addition to these officers and soldiers were many Armenian traders and monastics in various Italian cities like Ravenna, Venice, Florence, Naples, Ancona, Rome and others. A new chapter in Armenian-Italian relations began in the 12th Century with the concurrence of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia and the Crusades. According to the dates provided by Father Alishan, between 1240 and 1350, there were twenty-two Italian cities that had an Armenian church, and in some cities like Rome, Bologna and Venice, there was more than one church (Alishan 1893). However, the dispersion of Armenians in Italy reached its peak in the mid-14th Century. The existence of numerous guesthouses, signs of an animated traffic of travelers and merchants, and the many convents with their notable cultural and literary activities, attest to an evolved and active community.

The book does not claim to represent Armenian poetry adequately . Many gifted and well known authors have been omitted, partly from considerations of space, and partly because of the scope of the work . For instance, I should have liked to include some of the S harakans (rows of gems) of Nerses S hnorhali but the impossibility of reproducing their characteristic forms in another language, and doing them any justice, made me decide not to translate any of them . I have only given a few typical legends and poems , endeavouring, as far as possible, to convey the local colouring by adhering closely to the form, rhythm, and imagery of the originals in my trans lations . I have also largely based the decorative scheme of the illus m n Ar m e trations upon Ancient Ar e ian t as we see it in edia val missals and illuminations .

Indelible Thresholds Issue 1 (March 2019) www.indelibleaud.com March 2019 2 Editor's Note Thresholds, a Journey Begins Thresholds... Indelible, AUD’s literary journal, breathes its first not only on the heels of 2019, but at a time coinciding with Dubai’s Month of Reading, and during a very exciting period, which is just a few months shy of the long-awaited Expo 2020. With the Expo’s theme of “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”, and subthemes of Opportunity, Mobility, and Sustainability in mind, Indelible, in its current shape and form, is proud to take part in embodying these concepts: the opportunity for creatives to publish, gain acknowledgement, be seen, and cross paths with other like-minded talents who are also attempting to reach out to a broader literary and artistic global community. This brings us to the next Expo subtheme, that of Mobility—the agility of the written word, thought, and expression that will be able to travel across the world via this platform. The platform, an electronic literary magazine, also tends to focus on Sustainability—in its environment-friendly paperless form, not only sustaining trees, but also supporting the indelible quality of the written word that remains and prevails. I am excited to watch Indelible spring and grow, as it bridges cultures and minds through a prospering community of the finest readers, voices, and aesthetic eyes around the globe. "Thresholds" will be the theme of the first issue; we are now at the threshold of a new inter-cultural literary era, sharing and showcasing our different expressions of the worlds around us and in us with each other as a global literary community.

UNIVERSITY of CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Sayat`-Nova: Within the Near Eastern bardic tradition and posthumous A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements of the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures by Xi Yang 2016 © Copyright by Xi Yang 2016 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Sayat`-Nova: Within the Near Eastern bardic tradition and posthumous by Xi Yang Doctor of Philosophy in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures University of California, Los Angeles, 2016 Professor Peter S. Cowe, Chair AšuƗ/aşık/aşıq (from the Arabic ʿāshiq, or lover) is a skilled bard's composite performing art-- a unity of prose narrations, songs, instrumental accompaniment, and appropriate gesture. Of sixteenth-century Turkic origin, the art spread over a vast area covering modern Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and further. In the mid- eighteenth century Sayat`-Nova, the best-known Armenian ašuƗ, was active in Tiflis (modern Tbilisi), the capital of Eastern Georgia. His songs were written in at least three languages--Armenian, Georgian and Azerbaijani--and won praise for their ardent emotion and artistic perfection. But despite his importance in Near Eastern culture, two issues in Sayat`-Nova studies have rarely been studied. First, fully appreciating Sayat`-Nova requires contextualizing his work within the developing ii Armenian ašuƗ tradition and the international ašuƗ/aşık/aşıq tradition in the Near East. Second, the history of Sayat`-Nova studies as a field and its growing popularity in relation to twentieth-century Armenian nationalism and Soviet cultural policies demands attention as well. Focusing on these neglected issues will enable a richer understanding of Sayat`- Nova's place in the history of the ašuƗ/aşık/aşıq tradition as well as his relation to the elevated poetic traditions in South Caucasia, the Armenian ašuƗs’ contribution within the broader matrix of the early modern Turkic aşık/aşıq tradition, and the evolution of a distinct ašuƗ tradition in the Armenian language.

  • Armenian Legends and Poems by Zabelle C
Armenian Legends and Poems by Zabelle C. Boyajian [1916] This is a collection of translations of Armenian literature from the middle ages, interspersed with poetry from the 19th century. In addition, there are a number of episodes from the chronicles of Moses of Khorene, a fifth century Armenian historian. These recount legendary incidents of ancient Armenian history. The anthologist and translator of many of these poems, Zabelle Boyajian, also created the luminous illustrations. The book concludes with a long essay by Aram Raffi which contextualizes the long history of Armenian literature. This essay also details the long religious history of Armenia, starting with an extended discussion of the ancient Pagan deities. Armenia is in a region which is a cross- roads between Asia and Europe, and has more often than not been conquered by the dominant regional power of the day, starting with the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Macedonians, through the Ottomans and finally the Russians. Nevertheless, Armenia has managed to hold onto a unique cultural and linguistic identity. Armenians have produced a substantial national literature, particularly in those short windows of time while not under foreign domination. Unfortunately, not much of this has been translated into English. This anthology is one of the few sources we have in the public domain. So please enjoy this little sampler of Armenian literature. www.24grammata.com p. i ARMENIAN LEGENDS AND POEMS p. ii p. iii ARMENIA p. iv ARMENIAN LEGENDS AND POEMS www.24grammata.com COMPILED & ILLUSTRATED by ZABELLE C. The exhibitions were initiated by Muscari, an association for the promotion of Armenian and French cultural heritages, and its president Manoug Pamokdjian. The events were organized as part of the global project aimed at the promotion of the economic and artistic prowess of Gyumri, initiated by Antonio Montalto, Honorary Consul of Italy in Gyumri, and the Pamokdjian family. The Muscari association plans to establish several Houses of Armenia (les Maisons d’Arménie), centers for the distribution and promotion of Armenian crafts across France and other European countries. In addition to the unique nature of the presented items, the goal of the exhibitions is to use art as a way of reviving Gyumri, a city devastated by a powerful earthquake in 1988 as well as continued economic crisis.
