It focuses on four case studies: Luigi Pirandello’s self-translations of ’A birritta cu ’i ciancianeddi (1916) and Tutto per bene (1920), Maria Kuncewiczowa’s self-translation of Thank you for the Rose (1950-1960) and Janusz Głowacki’s assisted self-translation of Antygona w Nowym Jorku (1992). In discussing the case studies, the thesis draws attention to power relations and to the concepts of self-translation’s hybridity and its invisibility in accounts of national literatures, dominated by monolingual and monocultural paradigms. The aim of this study is to identify what the comparison of different contexts reveals about self-translation, its invisibility and the power relations involved. The analysis begins with an outline of theoretical frameworks and debates in the field of self-translation. The themes examined in this part concern the definition of the practice, creativity in self- translation, the importance of paratext and self-translation genetics, ending with a focus on power relations, self-translation’s invisibility and hybridity. The second chapter illustrates current scholarship, including scholarship on Italian and Polish self-translation, and clarifies the choice of case studies and terminology. Following this preliminary contextualisation, the core of the thesis is dedicated to the Italian and Polish areas of study. It is composed of mapping the phenomenon in 20th-century Italian and Polish literature, respectively, and of a thorough examination of the case studies. Each case study takes into account relevant elements of the historical, cultural and sociolinguistic contexts, and stresses the hybridity of the writers’ personal and literary identities. Based on a genetic translation studies approach, the case studies include analysis of paratextual material and close comparative analysis of the linguistic variants involved. The case studies are concluded with observations on the (in)visibility of self-translations and of the related texts. The conclusion considers how the case studies highlight questions of power, self-translation’s invisibility, both in terms of the phenomenon and texts involved, as well as the question of the hybridity of self-translation and self-translators.     Postmemory, Post-dependence, Post- trauma: Negotiating Jewish Identity 9 in Post-Communist Poland Aleksandra Szczepan In studies concerning identity practices in contemporary, post-communist Poland, three issues seem to be crucial: the memory strategies they involve, the previous state of dependency towards which they define themselves, and their relationship with the historical traumas they have to overcome. These are labeled by three catchy terms: postmemory, post-dependence, and post-trauma; these perspectives – similar to other “posts”, e.g. postmodernism or postsecularism – are characterized by several common features: specific belatedness, temporal shift, the practice of quoting and mediation, defining the present always in relation to a troubling past, oscillating between continuity and rupture. Secondly, all of them are a sort of loan-notion from Western memory, trauma and Holocaust studies, hastily adapted to Polish realities. Even post-dependence discourse – which is to be understood as a set of signifying and identity practices that have been undertaken after the situation of dependence came to an end – was introduced to the vocabulary of Polish humanities as a specific remedy and substitute for the postcolonial perspective, which turned out to be quite resistant to being convincingly applied to the Polish cultural situation. As I will try to show, adapting categories from the Western theoretical vocabulary or creating new ones in order to examine Polish culture and identity strategies may be fully legitimate only if we discern the basic differences this local perspective engages, and recognize the entanglement of several factors it always results in. Dictated to by a tyrannical father and cared for by a meek mother, Pirandello developed an interesting view of marriage, women, and love. The passivity of his mother and eventual paranoia and insanity of his wife, Antoinette Potulano, created a premise for his literary women. As he formulated and evolved his impressions of the feminine identity from what he witnessed between his parents and experienced with his wife, the “Master of Futurism” examined the flaws of interpersonal communication between genders. He translated those experiences into his literature by depicting institutions such as marriage negatively in his early works and later shifting the bulk of his focus to gender oppositions. Pirandello explores the conundrum between men and women by placing his female characters into paradoxical roles. This thesis challenges previous criticism that maintains Pirandello’s women are “dismembered,” weak, and deconstructed characters and instead concludes that, although Pirandello’s literary women are mutable figures and his literature contains patriarchal elements, a matriarchal society dominates Pirandello’s literature.
