    Yearbook of Conrad Studies (Poland) Vol. 13 2018, pp. 17–29 doi: 0.4467/20843941YC.18.002.11237 “HE WAS ONE OF US” – JOSEPH CONRAD AS A HOME ARMY AUTHOR Stefan Zabierowski The University of Silesia, Katowice Abstract: The aim of this article is to show how Conrad’s fiction (and above all the novelLord Jim) influenced the formation of the ethical attitudes and standards of the members of the Polish Home Army, which was the largest underground army in Nazi-occupied Europe. The core of this army was largely made up of young people who had been born around the year 1920 (i.e. after Poland had regained her independence in 1918) and who had had the opportunity to become acquainted with Conrad’s books during the interwar years. During the wartime occupation, Conrad became the fa- vourite author of those who were actively engaged in fighting the Nazi regime, familiarizing young conspirators with the ethics of honour—the conviction that fighting in a just cause was a reward in itself, regardless of the outcome. The views of this generation of soldiers have been recorded by the writers who were among them: Jan Józef Szczepański, Andrzej Braun and Leszek Prorok. ON THE REORGANIZATION OF THE GREAT NAPOLEONIC ARMY IN NOVEMBER 1812 In the year 1812, Smoleńsk was to have served as a supply center for the Great Army. When deciding to retreat from the battlefi eld at Malojaroslavec, Napoleon was convinced that Smoleńsk was well prepared and that the Great Army would be able to spend the winter in its vicinity. Yet it turned out that the Great Army commissariat and the local Napoleonic governors were not able to adequately prepare the Smoleńsk fortress. Therefore on reaching Smoleńsk, Napoleon made the decision that the Great Army should retreat further to the west – onto the territories of the former Polish Commonwealth – Lithuania. In the course of a few days from 9–14 November, he managed to increase the size of the Great Army by around 20 thousand soldiers. When leaving Smoleńsk, Napoleon’s army had still around two hundred canons at its disposal. It had adequate supplies of food, ammunition and was to a large degree “rejuvenated”. Napoleon had attained a great feat at Smoleńsk. He had in fact saved the Great Army. Without his effort, the army’s further march would have been impossible. The reorganized Great Army was able to retreat further to the west and its regiments were ready to fend off the attacks of the enemy – that is Russians, as was proved by the heavy fi ghting in the battle of Krasne.

    Facing History’s Poland Study Tour Confirmed Speakers and Tour Guides Speakers Jolanta Ambrosewicz-Jacobs, Director Center for Holocaust Studies at the Jagiellonian University Dr. Jolanta Ambrosewicz-Jacobs is the Director of the Center for Holocaust Studies at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. She received her Ph.D. in Humanities from Jagiellonian University. Dr. Ambrosewicz-Jacobs was a fellow at several institutions. She was a Pew Fellow at the Center for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University, a visiting fellow at Oxford University and at Cambridge University, and a DAAD fellow at the Memorial and Educational Site House of the Wannsee Conference. She is also the author of Me – Us – Them. Ethnic Prejudices and Alternative Methods of Education: The Case of Poland and has published more than 50 articles on anti-Semitism in Poland, memory of the Holocaust, and education about the Holocaust. Anna Bando, President Association of Polish Righteous Among Nations The Association of Polish Righteous Among Nations was founded in 1985. Its members are Polish citizens who have been honored with the title and medal of Righteous Among the Nations. The goals of the society are to disseminate information about the occupation, the Holocaust and the actions of the Righteous, and to fight against anti-Semitism and xenophobia. Anna Bando, nee Stupnicka, together with her mother, Janina Stupnicka, were honored in 1984 as Righteous Among the Nations for their rescue of Liliana Alter, an eleven year old Jewish girl, from the Warsaw ghetto. The two smuggled her out of the ghetto as well as provided her false papers and sheltered her until the end of the war.
