    Cultures in Transit Diaspora Identities: Jewish Bakeries and Baked Goods in London and Berlin DEVORAH ROMANEK This essay investigates how material culture acts as an agent of cultural construction when social and cultural practices are geographically displaced. It does this by taking a comparative look at current Jewish Diaspora communities in London and Berlin, and by analyzing the production, consumption and broader meaning of three Jewish baked goods – matzos, challah and bagels - in the context of Diaspora communities in these two cities. The comparison between London and Berlin also allows a consideration of the construction of ‘locality’/‘setting’, particularly in the transient sense of a fluid concept of sense-of-place as constructed against a backdrop of material culture; additionally, the level of religious observance; the contrast of notions of ‘fixed’ and ‘fluid’, and ‘traditional’ and ‘cosmopolitan’; and the agency of the baked goods themselves is observed and analyzed. Introduction Anthropological discussions on the theme of cultures in movement, that is to say Diaspora, or the more contemporary notions of globalization and transnationalism, offer many disparate theories. There is the argument that globalization as a post- modern phenomenon is bringing an end to the practice of ‘tradition’ and ‘traditional cultures’, and that it is inviting a worldwide culture of heterogeneity .1 1 For a discussion of this see Anthony Giddens, “Living in a post-traditional society”, in Ulrich Beck, Reflexive Modernization: Politics, Tradition and Aesthetics in the Modern Social Order, Cambridge, Polity Press, 1994. Juni 2012 Grossratsbeschluss betreffend die Umschreibung der römisch-katholischen Kirchgemeinden des Kantons Bern Der Grosse Rat des Kantons Bern, gestützt auf Artikel 108 der Kantonsverfassung (KV) [BSG 101.1], Artikel 8 des Gesetzes vom 6. Mai 1945 über die bernischen Landeskirchen (Kirchengesetz, KG) [BSG 410.11], auf Antrag des Regierungsrates, beschliesst: Art. 1 Kirchgemeinden Die Kirchgemeinden der römisch-katholischen Landeskirche des Kantons sind im Anhang umschrieben. Art. 2 Namen der Kirchgemeinden 1 Jede Kirchgemeinde hat den Namen zu führen, mit dem sie in diesem Erlass bezeichnet ist. 2 Amtliche Drucksachen mit nicht übereinstimmenden Kirchgemeindenamen sind entsprechend anzupassen. 3 Mit Bewilligung der zuständigen Stelle der Justiz-, Gemeinde- und Kirchendirektion kann eine Kirchgemeinde in ihrem Organisations- und Verwaltungsreglement einen abweichenden Namen einführen. 4 Französischsprachige Kirchgemeinden im deutschsprachigen Kantonsteil und deutschsprachige Kirchgemeinden im französischsprachigen Kantonsteil führen einen Namen in ihrer Sprache.
