Collectors in Ukraine could see the auction lots first. The works can be seen only from November 26 in London. On November 12, the VIP-reception was dedicated to opening of the exhibition. The hostess of the auction Ekaterina MacDougall received the guests. The MacDougall’s exposition occupied several rooms of the “Chocolate House”. Organizers presented the enigmatic autobiographical work by Ilya Repin “Returning Home” (1876-77) from the posthumous exhibition of the artist, little-known to the general public and the art market, in Helsinki in 1930. They also presented the graduate work by Ivan Shishkin for the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts of 1860 “View of the Valaam Island”. The masterpiece of the young painter was recognized and acquired by an American collector, and since then the sight of the painting was lost for many years. The early work by Ivan Aivazovsky “Venetian Lagoon at Night” (1842) painted before his “pink period” and the work “Moonlit Night on the Dnieper River” (1887) were among those paintings which appeared rarely at the art market.     Cultures in Transit Diaspora Identities: Jewish Bakeries and Baked Goods in London and Berlin DEVORAH ROMANEK This essay investigates how material culture acts as an agent of cultural construction when social and cultural practices are geographically displaced. It does this by taking a comparative look at current Jewish Diaspora communities in London and Berlin, and by analyzing the production, consumption and broader meaning of three Jewish baked goods – matzos, challah and bagels - in the context of Diaspora communities in these two cities. The comparison between London and Berlin also allows a consideration of the construction of ‘locality’/‘setting’, particularly in the transient sense of a fluid concept of sense-of-place as constructed against a backdrop of material culture; additionally, the level of religious observance; the contrast of notions of ‘fixed’ and ‘fluid’, and ‘traditional’ and ‘cosmopolitan’; and the agency of the baked goods themselves is observed and analyzed. Introduction Anthropological discussions on the theme of cultures in movement, that is to say Diaspora, or the more contemporary notions of globalization and transnationalism, offer many disparate theories.
