Dushyanta married Shakuntala, the foster-daughter of sage Kanva. Shakuntala was born to Menaka, a nymph of Indra's court, from sage Vishwamitra, who secretly fell in love with her. Shakuntala gave birth to a worthy son Bharata, who grew up to be fearless and strong. He ruled for many years and was the founder of the Kuru dynasty. Unfortunately, things did not go well after the death of Bharata and his large empire was reduced to a kingdom of medium size with its capital Hastinapur. Mahabharata means the story of the descendents of Bharata. The regular saga of the epic of the Mahabharata, however, starts with king Shantanu. Shantanu lived in Hastinapur and was known for his valor and wisdom. One day he went out hunting to a nearby forest. Reaching the bank of the river Ganges (Ganga), he was startled to see an indescribably charming damsel appearing out of the water and then walking on its surface.     18. The Avatar as the Ideal Men seek a good time, position and good life But will not cultivate good thoughts, wisdom or right conduct. Do you know why legs have been given? Is it to roam aimlessly in alleys and bylanes? No. It is to take to the shrine of Lord Siva. Do you know why you have been endowed with eyes? Is it to gaze on all kinds of things? No. It is to behold the Lord of Kailasa.. WHAT the nation needs today is idealism. Society and the world need the inspiring examples of ideal leaders. There are, no doubt, individuals who are exemplars in their particular fields. But it is rare to find any one person who is an ideal in every respect. It is possible for God alone to be such an ideal. Lord Sri Krishna stands out as a unique ideal figure, exemplifying the highest qualities in every respect--social, political, ethical and spiritual. That Krishna was a war-monger and not a lover of peace has long been a matter for discussion. But Krishna was essentially a lover of peace. The ways of the Divine are not necessarily intelligible to all. Today people worship God as God but do not try to understand the ideal human qualities displayed by an Avatar. It is only when the human ideals exemplified by Sri Krishna, when He incarnated as man and lived and moved amongst men, are recognized that human life can be rendered meaningful. It is worth examining in what manner Krishna displayed these marks of human excellence.

Perumpallikunnel DISCERNMENT: THE MESSAGE OF THE BHAGAVAD-GITA ABSTRACT The Bhagavad-Gita is an intelligent response to a perennial human predicament which other religions and philosophies also tried to resolve in their own way. Human beings often stood perplexed and mystified as they confronted paradoxical situations in life that demanded action. Discerning right from wrong often became an existential predicament. The Pandava prince Arjuna found himself standing on the shaky ground of Kurukshetra not knowing the way forward. Lord Krishna outlines for him the path towards gaining flawless self-knowledge and self-mastery from his sorrowful state of confusion and opened his eyes to perceive the truths beyond appearances. Krishna instructs him that, when a person is capable of watching everything that happens within and around him dispassionately and acting with an attitude of detachment, he attains sthithaprajna (equanimity) and samadhai (liberation). 1. INTRODUCTION The subject matter of the Bhagavad-Gita (The song of God) is nothing other than discernment (Ramacharaka 2010:3). According to the Gita, discernment is all about nityanithya vastu viveka (discernment of the eternal and temporal realities) (Kaji 2001:27). Lord Krishna, the supreme Guru, tutors his confused disciple, Arjuna, to lead him from the state of maya (illusion) to the perfect understanding of satyasya satyam (really real). Krishna outlines for Arjuna the path towards gaining flawless self- knowledge and self-mastery from his sorrowful state of confusion (1:47).
