Finished Vehicle Logistics by Rail in Europe Version 3 December 2017 This publication was prepared by Oleh Shchuryk, Research & Projects Manager, ECG – the Association of European Vehicle Logistics. Foreword The project to produce this book on ‘Finished Vehicle Logistics by Rail in Europe’ was initiated during the ECG Land Transport Working Group meeting in January 2014, Frankfurt am Main. Initially, it was suggested by the members of the group that Oleh Shchuryk prepares a short briefing paper about the current status quo of rail transport and FVLs by rail in Europe. It was to be a concise document explaining the complex nature of rail, its difficulties and challenges, main players, and their roles and responsibilities to be used by ECG’s members. However, it rapidly grew way beyond these simple objectives as you will see. The first draft of the project was presented at the following Land Transport WG meeting which took place in May 2014, Frankfurt am Main. It received further support from the group and in order to gain more knowledge on specific rail technical issues it was decided that ECG should organise site visits with rail technical experts of ECG member companies at their railway operations sites. These were held with DB Schenker Rail Automotive in Frankfurt am Main, BLG Automotive in Bremerhaven, ARS Altmann in Wolnzach, and STVA in Valenton and Paris. As a result of these collaborations, and continuous research on various rail issues, the document was extensively enlarged. The document consists of several parts, namely a historical section that covers railway development in Europe and specific EU countries; a technical section that discusses the different technical issues of the railway (gauges, electrification, controlling and signalling systems, etc.); a section on the liberalisation process in Europe; a section on the key rail players, and a section on logistics services provided by rail. -

So we discussed how to improve our services and solve actual problems. Z-Info Of course, we will still present you the new items on the Z market. But we want to slightly change our focus. Today, it is well known that every Märklin loco has a five pole motor. So it is not necessary to repeat it every time. The same is true about fine the detailing of models from big manufacturers as well as small series producers. Even the usual tech- niques (etching, injection molding and so on) are of little interest in these stages. If you are interested in such terms, you could ask the dis- tributor. Instead of such catalogue-information, we want to provide you with more information about the prototype, so that you are able to de- termine as to whether or not a new item fits into your model-railroad project. If we will receive the respective articles from you, or if we will find the time to do it ourselves, we want to present more articles about tips and tricks, how to do it manuals, and the technical basics of model-railroad- ing. But we do not want to neglect reports abaout layouts and exhibitions. Speaking more generally we want to make a magazine which entertains you and gives information to you inde- pendent of the calendar.In contrast to the newspaper of yesterday, you should benefit from reading the maga- zine even some weeks or months later. -

THE USATC S160 WAR LOCOS IN GERMANY. In 'Eisenbahn Kurier' 4/2014 pp.38-46 is Part 1 of an article by Andreas Knipping on these American 2-8-0 locos and their wartime and post-war use in Germany. ''As is well known, the major battlefields and occupation areas of both World Wars were largely and for the majority of the period outside Germany itself. The First World War only affected the Reichsgebiete in the southern part of Alsace and briefly in 1914 in East Prussia; the Second World War (apart of course from the air war) was held outside the Reich's borders until October 1944. The history of the German military railways and the German locomotives between the Atlantic and Black Seas is therefore very extensive. The G3, G4, G5 and G7 in the First World War, the P8, G8, G8.1 and G10 in both World Wars as well as the 50, 52 and 56.20 in the Second War covered many millions of kilometres in Belgium and France, in Russia and in the Balkans. Thousands of examples of these classes remained in foreign countries, and influenced operations there for decades. In Germany, in contrast, railway operations using foreign locomotives brought in remained the exception. It is true that the Soviet forces using the railway lines intensively as they fell into their hands from 1944 and indeed during their continuing presence in Germany until 1994, but the different gauges hindered a widespread use of Soviet locomotives during the periods of conquest and occupation and 'alliance'. Only a very few classes of locomotive of foreign construction worked for a brief period in Germany in any significant numbers. -

This has turned us and our over 800 employees into a key player charged not only with technical work, but also a growing number of strategic and planning tasks. We have more than 5000 orders on our books and are finding success both within Germany and far beyond its borders too. Since it is independent and neutral, DB Systemtechnik has commit- ted itself to developing the railway into a sector that is fit for the future and to finding solutions to new problems. Operator roles that were previously integrated are being separated out, thus in- creasing the number of players on the market and leading to more interfaces whose various technologies and processes all need to be mastered. The Vehicles Steering Committee has been created to address this last point and has already taken many decisions that prove just how essential it is. Alongside its full range of rail engineering and testing services, DB Systemtechnik is developing more and more products for predictive and preventive maintenance, which is becoming in- creasingly important in the quest to achieve seamless rail trans- port. -
