Between the late fifties and early sixties, there were a large number of trains operated by FS connecting the major industrial cities with Si- cily. • European Train Names: a Historic Outline Christian Weyers
ONOMÀSTICA BIBLIOTECA TÈCNICA DE POLÍTICA LINGÜÍSTICA European Train Names: a Historic Outline* Christian Weyers DOI: 10.2436/15.8040.01.201 Abstract This paper gives a first overview of the onomastic category of train names, searches to classify the corpus and reviews different stages of their productivity. Apart from geographical names (toponyms, choronyms, compass directions) generally indicating points of origin and destination of the trains in question, a considerable number of personal names have entered this category, of classical literary authors, musicians and scientists, but also of many fictional or non-fictional characters taken from literature or legendary traditions. In some cases also certain symbolic attributes of these persons and finally even heraldic figures have given their names to trains. In terms of their functionality, train names originally were an indicator of exclusiveness and high grade of travel quality, but they developed gradually, as they dispersed over the European continent, into a rather unspecific, generalized appellation, also for regional and local trains. After two periods of prosperity after 1950, the privatisation of railway companies starting in the 1990s had again a very positive effect on the category, as the number of named trains initially reached a new record in this decade. ***** The first train names appeared in England in the 1860s in addition to names for steam locomotives, and on two different levels. The Special Scotch Express between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh (inaugurated in 1862) was called by the public The Flying Scotsman from the 1870s, but it succeeded as the official name not before 1924. Also the names of the German diesel trainsets Der Fliegende Hamburger and Der Fliegende Kölner were colloquial name creations, as were the Train Bleu and the Settebello operated from 1922 and 1953 but officially named in 1947 and 1958, respectively.

  • It's a Roman Holiday for Artists
ITALIAN MODERN ART | ISSUE 3: ISSN 2640-8511 It’s a Roman Holiday for Artists: The American Artists of L’Obelisco After World War II IT’S A ROMAN HOLIDAY FOR ARTISTS: THE AMERICAN ARTISTS OF L’OBELISCO AFTER WORLD WAR II italianmodernart.org/journal/articles/its-a-roman-holiday-for-artists-the-american- Ilaria0 Schiaffini Methodologies of Exchange: MoMA’s “Twentieth-Century Italian Art” (1949), Issue 3, January 2020 ABSTRACT L’Obelisco was among the most international of galleries in Rome (1946–81). Its owners, Gaspero del Corso and Irene Brin, established particularly close relationships with the United States starting in 1946, when the gallery opened. They organized the first European exhibition of Robert Rauschenberg, in 1953, and shows of Eugène Berman, Roberto Matta, Saul Steinberg, Ben Shahn, and Alexander Calder, among many others. In 1957, they facilitated the first European retrospective dedicated to Arshile Gorky, with a catalogue that included a preface by Afro. This paper addresses the presence in Italy, from World War II through the 1950s, of artists from the U.S. including exiles who had fled there from elsewhere in Europe during the conflict. Artistic, commercial, and political factors intertwined and favored the concentration of American artists in Italy after the Liberation. Starting with their management of the small gallery La Margherita (1943–45), the del Corso couple were a reference point for all sorts of visitors from the U.S., including intelligence agents. Thanks to the complicity of one such agent, the journalist and antiquarian Peter Lindamood, and of the gallerist Alexander Iolas, the “Fantasts” section of the MoMA exhibition Twentieth-Century Italian Art took shape.

  • Saul Steinberg
Our Steinberg Journey Over these years, we have committed the Gallery to acquiring and offering a carefully curated body of remarkable art by Saul Steinberg. What a joy it has been. He was prolific and constantly creating new ways of seeing the world around us. He was a commentator on the human condition in subtle and profound and yet simple ways. He said, “I am a writer who draws,” and we are, indeed, very drawn to his finest drawings. Bernie Pucker, 2021 With Thanks With thanks to Patterson Sims and Sheila Schwartz at The Saul Steinberg Foundation for their invaluable knowledge of the artist and for helping guide us to a better understanding of his life and work. For more information, visit The Saul Steinberg Foundation website at www.saulsteinbergfoundation.org. The Art of Saul Steinberg The art of Saul Steinberg begins with the black line, the simplest of artistic marks. Within the relative quiet of line, however, lies an intricate lexicon of symbols and ideas. His art rewards close looking and thoughtful analysis, all the while evading easy explanation. Steinberg was by all accounts a private man whose career as an artist gave him a very public persona. Much ink has been spilled in the pursuit of gaining insight into his life, mind, and work. Harold Rosenberg’s 1978 essay, Joel Smith’s Steinberg at The New Yorker (2005) and Saul Steinberg: Illuminations (2006), and the comprehensive research available from the Saul Steinberg Foundation (saulsteinbergfoundation.org) are instrumental resources. A master draftsman, a commander of visual puns, an encyclopedia of art and historical references, Steinberg created a staggering body of work which, over the course of six decades, provided an incisive, sardonic, and humorous perspective on twentieth-century life.
