1 Representations of Christ in Christian Skaldic Poetry Ruth Elizabeth Cheadle UCL PhD 2 I, Ruth Elizabeth Cheadle, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 Abstract This thesis aims to demonstrate that, through use of literary genre, vocabulary, and emphasis of detail, the authors of Christian skaldic verse in the twelfth to fifteenth centuries continually reshaped a specific set of representations for Christ to suit each poem’s individual purpose, its audience, and the literary tastes of the periods in which they were written. In order to show how Christ’s portrayal changes over time and according to each poem’s overarching purpose, I have selected the following five Christian skaldic poems and made each the focus of a chapter: Einarr Skúlason’s Geisli, Gamli kanóki’s Harmsól, and the anonymously-composed poems Leiðarvísan, Líknarbraut, and Lilja. Within each chapter I provide an overview of the poem, selecting stanzas that highlight features of Christ that are prevalent or striking in some way, and analyse how these representations not only influence the poem itself, but also shape perceptions of Christ’s relationship with humanity. Each chapter leads to an overall consideration both of the image of Christ as this has been represented, and of the degree to which this has been influenced by biblical and patristic writings, Old Norse literature and culture, or by a combination of these elements. In the concluding chapter I identify the prevailing representations of Christ throughout these five poems, dividing these characterisations into five categories: Christ as Warrior Chieftain, as Healer and Abundant Nourisher, as Legal Authority, as Beguiler, and as Light. -

Francia ombrukket14_Layout 1 07.01.13 15:49 Side 265 Old French lais and Icelandic sagnakvæði Aðalheiður Guðmundsdóttir trengleikar is a collection of romantic tales that were translated from Sone or more collections of French narrative tales, the so-called lais (singular lai ), at the behest of Hákon the Old, who ruled over Norway from 1217 to 1263. The Strengleikar consist of twenty one lais and a prologue, and are now preserved in the Norwegian manuscript de la Gardie 4–7 at the University of Uppsala library alongside four leaves of the same manuscript, which are today found at the Arnamagnaean Institute in Copenhagen under the signum AM 666 b 4to. The manuscript is considered to be from about 1270 and as such is one of the oldest and most important compendiums of Old Norse translations of courtly literature. 1 The lais – as with other courtly literature – were compiled for the entertainment of the King and his court. They were composed in poetic form, and were on average 3–400 stanzas in length. They were sung or read with instrumental accompaniment, most likely stringed instruments, as the name Strengleikar would indicate. Their performance was therefore a combination of two art forms, the spoken and the musical, each supporting the other. It can thus be assumed that reading the tales does not have the same effect on listeners today as it did in the courts of the Middle Ages. Despite this, the content of the lais , which bears witness to the world of the audience who experienced them, is none the less entertaining. -

The Prose Edda
The Prose Edda of Snorri Sturlson Translated by Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur [1916] The Prose Edda is a text on Old Norse Poetics, written about 1200 by the Icelandic poet and politican Snorri Sturlson, who also wrote the Heimskringla. The Prose Edda contains a wide variety of lore which a Skald (poet) of the time would need to know. The text is of interest to modern readers because it contains consistent narratives of many of the plot lines of Norse mythology. Although Snorri was a Christian, he treated the ancient Pagan mythology with great respect. To this end, Snorri created a quasi-historical backstory for the Norse Gods. Hence the Prose Edda is of interest because it contains one of the first attempts to devise a rational explanation for mythological and legendary events. It is also notable because it contains fragments of a number of manusripts which Snorri had access to, but which are now lost. Ritgerð til M.A.-prófs Pétur Húni Björnsson Kt.: 270771-3789 Leiðbeinandi: Ármann Jakobsson Janúar 2020 Útdráttur Rímur voru eitt vinsælasta skemmtiefni á Íslandi um sex alda skeið. Hátt í fimmtán hundruð rímur hafa verið ortar svo vitað sé og ríflega þúsund rímur eru varðveittar. Rímur eru löng frásagnarkvæði ort undir sérstökum bragarháttum og voru í nánast öllum tilfellum ortar eftir þekktum sögum, og sumum sögum var snúið í rímur oftar en einu sinni. Rímur hafa ekki notið mikillar hylli sem rannsóknarefni og gjarnan hafa þær verið sem hornkerlingar við fræðaborðið. Samlestur rímna og sagnanna sem þær eru ortar út af leiðir oft í ljós að rímurnar einfalda sögurnar, fletja út persónur með því að ýkja upp ákveðna þætti þeirra en sleppa öðrum, og blása út atburði eins og bardaga og siglingar með staglkenndum og formúlukenndum hætti. Það hefur orðið til þess að rímur hafa oft verið taldar lakar bókmenntir, formúlukenndar og sjálfhverfar. Þessi rannsókn leiðir í ljós að rímur voru frá öndverðu efni ætlað til flutnings og að efnistök og efnismeðferð í elstu varðveittu rímum er að mörgu leyti algerlega í takt við þau efnistök og efnismeðferð sem tíðkast í munnlegum kveðskap víða um heim, þar sem meginmarkmiðið er að stýra túlkun áheyrenda til þess að draga úr óvissu- þáttum svo sagan komist rétt til skila. Sjálfhverfa þeirra er því arfur frá munnlegum flutningi og geymd þeirra frá elsta stigi þróunarsögu þeirra. -

ARINBJARNARKVIÐA is an Old Norse poem in the kviðuháttr meter. It is composed in praise of Arinbjǫrn Þórisson, a friend of the skald Egill Skalla- grímsson. The only source of the poem, except for a few citations in scholarly work, is page 99v in the 14th-century Möðruvallabók. This page is now mostly unreadable, but old transcripts of it exist.
