Alessandro Barberis Presidente della Camera di commercio industria artigianato e agricoltura di Torino 4 sezione1-2007 17-10-2007 18:02 Pagina 5 After the success of last year’s edition, we now present the new Guide to the DOC wines of the province of Torino, which was launched to promote quality winemaking in the Torino area. The second edition is even more comprehensive and packed full of information. It contains facts and figures: 35 wineries were selected by the Tasting Commission set up by the Torino Chamber of Commerce, with 113 samples of wine; of these, no less than 89 obtained a score of 80/100, permitting 31 wine producers to appear in the pages that follow. It reflects collaboration and content: for the first time, the 2007 Guide introduces the Regional Wine Cellar of Wines of the Province of Torino, a new partner in the project. And to satisfy the curiosity of wine enthusiasts, it also describes the most widespread native and other grape varietals in the Torino area. But above all, this edition stands out for the quality of the wines it presents, with 11 samples judged “excellent”. A superb result, in an area that has been investing plenty of commitment and hard work in the production of quality wine for many years. It is an excellent signal for the Torino Chamber of Commerce, which has always focused great attention on this sector, and is also responsible for certifying the DOC wines from the province. The registers of vineyards for DOC wine, the lists of technicians and expert tasters, the Tasting Commission and the bottler’s register are an indispensable tool that guarantees and draws attention to product quality, and are all managed competently and expertly by the Chamber of Commerce, in line with Italian and European legislation. Assisted by the chemical laboratory of the Chamber of Commerce, the Tasting Commission periodically examines the wines produced by the wineries in the province of Torino, verifying their eligibility for DOC certification. A few years ago, the specific skills of the members of the Commission prompted them to suggest that Torino’s winemakers should submit a selection of local DOC wines, so that the best output could be identified each year. The wines and producers in the Guide are therefore a cross-section of the oenological excellence that the province has achieved. The first edition of the Guide, published in 2006, was the first of its kind in Piemonte, and was a great success with the public of experts and wine lovers, in Italy and abroad. We were even gratified to learn that, because of the clarity of the presentation, it has been used as an educational tool for meetings at a number of hotel management schools. The idea of presenting the DOC wines from the province to the general public has therefore proved to be a winner, but it would be nothing without the producers themselves, true testimonials of the identity and tradition of our original, varied vine-growing and winemaking heritage.

  • Wine List Intro.Docx
Supplement to Wine & Gastronomy Catalogues This book list, together with my Wine & Gastronomy Catalogues (1996-2002) represents, to the best of my reconstructive ability, the complete collection built over a roughly twenty-year period ending in 1982. The Wine & Gastronomy Catalogues had been drawn from books that suffered fire and water torture in 1979. The present list also includes books acquired before and after that event, while we were living in Italy, and before I reluctantly rejected the idea of rebuilding the collection. A few of these later acquisitions were offered for sale in the catalogues, but most of them remain in my possession. They are identified here with the note “[**++].” The following additional identifiers are used in this list: [**ici] – “incomplete cataloguing information” available – “short title” detail at best. All of these books were lost or discarded. [**sold] – books sold prior to the Wine & Gastronomy series, including from my Catalogue 1, issued March 1990. [**kept] – includes bibliographies, reference books, and books on coffee, tea and chocolate, and a few others which escaped inclusion in the catalogues. All items not otherwise identified were lost or discarded. The list includes a number of wine maps, but there were a few others for which there wasn’t enough information available to justify inclusion. To the list of wine bibliographies consulted for the Wine & Gastronomy catalogues, I would like to add the extensive German bibliography by Renate Schoene, first published in 1978 as Bibliographie zur Geschichte des Weines (Mannheim, 1976), followed by three supplements (1978, 1982, 1984), and the second edition (München, 1988).
