Statistics help us to improve our understanding of the past and the present. The first statistically interpretable sources are the parish registers (baptismal, marriage, and death re- gisters) that have been preserved since the middle of the 17th century. The first purposefully made statistical surveys of the Principality appeared in 1784 in the form of population cen- suses.
