A misguided assumption about Soviet cinema, which still persists, is that it’s a national cinema mostly comprised of depressing war dramas in which popular genres were neglected and even suppressed. This is certainly not the picture of Soviet cinema I remember when, 1 growing up in 1960s Bulgaria, I could enjoy a fair share of popular films, like the Soviet action-adventure Neulovimyye mstiteli/The Elusive Avengers (1966) or Yuri Nikulin’s superb comedies, all playing in theatres alongside the comedies of Louis de Funès or Raj Kapoor’s ever-popular weepy Awara/The Vagabond (1951). A highlight was Eldar Ryazanov’s musical, Karnavalnaya noch/Carnival Night (1956), with Lyudmila Gurchenko’s unforgettable dancing and singing. Made several years before I was even born, Carnival Night was so popular that by the time I started watching movies it was still regularly playing in theatres as well as being shown on television. Here, a buoyant and beautiful Lydmila Gurchenko leads a group of amateur actors to undermine the plans of the Culture Ministry and its boring leadership in order to turn a New Year’s Eve celebration into an exciting vibrant extravaganza, with confetti, sparklers and crackers. It was only later, in my teenage years when I started visiting the Sofia Cinémathèque, that I realized how Carnival Night in many aspects replicated Grigoriy Aleksandrov’s musical extravaganzas of the 1930s. -

The Sochi Olympics, Celebration Capitalism and Homonationalist Pride1
1 The Sochi Olympics, celebration capitalism and homonationalist pride1 Ann Travers and Mary Shearman Simon Fraser University In July 2013 the Russian government passed two anti-LGBT laws that drew international criticism. Russia’s impending hosting of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games inspired more sustained international attention to these laws than might have otherwise been the case. In this article, we apply the mutually supporting frameworks of queer/trans necropolitics and celebration capitalism to a content analysis of coverage of the Sochi Olympics in the Advocate and Xtra, the leading LGBT publications in the United States and Canada respectively. We contend that the Advocate and Xtra participated in a homonationalist process of manufacturing consent as the USA, Canada, the West in general and the Olympic Games were glorified while issues relating to racism and colonialism in Russia, the USA and Canada were ignored and these geopolitical formations in general were falsely generalized as safe havens for LGBT people. This conclusion is based on two key observations. First, we noted complete silence about racist and ethnic violence in Russia and in the specific site of Sochi in the Advocate and only one (unelaborated) acknowledgement of Sochi as a historical site of ethnic cleansing in Xtra. Second, in spite of the recent expansion of formal citizenship rights for LGBT people, more uniformly in Canada than in the USA, Advocate and Xtra coverage failed to acknowledge the dissonance between American and Canadian governments positioning themselves as LGBT and human rights leaders and the harm these National Security States continue to deliver to racialized, impoverished and gender and sexual minority populations. -

A Conversation with Brian Firkus by Paul Masterson Local club-goers know Trixie Mattel as an out - rageous drag persona. She performs at Milwau - kee’s Hamburger Mary’s, Hybrid and La Cage, Madison’s Plan B as well as Chicago’s Hydrate and other venues. Under the extravagant wig and fierce make-up is Brian Firkus. Firkus, a profes - sionally trained musician and singer/songwriter, is a professional make-up artist by day, drag queen by night. And, along with a small clique of young entrepreneurs, he helps produce SWELL, a new local party crew. It’s taking Milwaukee by storm, energizing the Milwaukee scene with an entirely unique party concept. QUEST spoke with Firkus about his Wisconsin past, his drag persona Trixie Mattel, and SWELL. QUEST: Before we get into the present, can you give us a quick bio? Brian Firkus: I grew up in the far, far north woods of Wisconsin. My family is Native Ameri - can. There were 30 kids in my high school grad - uating class. I moved to Milwaukee to go to UWM for theater. I’m a vibrant Leo. One of my are beautiful. In this book, for the first time, an attempt is made to give a wide panorama of nearly forty Soviet and Russian movies and TV series filmed in Taganrog and its environs, in the mirror of the opinions of film critics and viewers. Unfortunately, data are not available for all such films (therefore, the book, for example, does not include many documentaries). The book cites articles and reviews of Soviet and Russian film critics, audience reviews on the Internet portals "Kino –teater.ru" and "Kinopoisk". I also managed to collect data on over fifty actors, directors, screenwriters, cameramen, film composers, film critics, whose life was associated with Taganrog. -

I argue that cinema and racialized discourses of gender, sexuality and ethno-nationalism play a key role in the denial of Palestinian belonging. I begin by arguing that ongoing Palestinian dispossession remains largely unrecognizable in the dominant North American and European imagination of Palestine in part due to what became a recognizable and inevitable narrative of Palestine as a Jewish national homeland. Revealing the extra-Zionist routes of early Jewish Agency propaganda films, for example, I detach them from reigning progress narratives in Israeli transnational film studies, and explore their implication in a broader visual culture that promoted exclusive Jewish national belonging in Historic Palestine. -
