The Uses of Animation 1 1 The Uses of Animation ANIMATION Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape,digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced. Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, paper cutouts, puppets and clay figures. Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. THE MOST COMMON USES OF ANIMATION Cartoons The most common use of animation, and perhaps the origin of it, is cartoons. Cartoons appear all the time on television and the cinema and can be used for entertainment, advertising, 2 Aspects of Animation: Steps to Learn Animated Cartoons presentations and many more applications that are only limited by the imagination of the designer. The most important factor about making cartoons on a computer is reusability and flexibility. The system that will actually do the animation needs to be such that all the actions that are going to be performed can be repeated easily, without much fuss from the side of the animator. -

I analyze different visual and narrative strategies developed by the directors of youth cinema during the Brezhnev period as mechanisms for circumventing ideological control over cultural production. -

When adapted to films by non-Aboriginal filmmakers, these legends are often interpreted in ways which modify human-nature relationships experienced by Aboriginal peoples. I explore such modifications by looking at Canadian and Russian ethnographic animation based on Northern Aboriginal folklore of the two countries. In my thesis, I concentrate on the analysis of ethno-historical and cinematic traditions of Canada and Russia. I also explore the Canadian and Russian conventions of animated folktales and compare ethnographic animation produced by the National Film Board of Canada and Russian animation studio Soyuzmultfilm. -

The first chapter examines the nuances of three critical terms: “documentary,” “collective memory,” and “cultural trauma.” I then turn to a historical approach, exploring how political culture and technology affected the content, production, and screening of documentaries, first discussing the time leading up to perestroika and then the massive changes during the glasnost era. In the final chapters, I argue that there are three primary approaches the films examined in this project take to understanding the past. -

A misguided assumption about Soviet cinema, which still persists, is that it’s a national cinema mostly comprised of depressing war dramas in which popular genres were neglected and even suppressed. This is certainly not the picture of Soviet cinema I remember when, 1 growing up in 1960s Bulgaria, I could enjoy a fair share of popular films, like the Soviet action-adventure Neulovimyye mstiteli/The Elusive Avengers (1966) or Yuri Nikulin’s superb comedies, all playing in theatres alongside the comedies of Louis de Funès or Raj Kapoor’s ever-popular weepy Awara/The Vagabond (1951). A highlight was Eldar Ryazanov’s musical, Karnavalnaya noch/Carnival Night (1956), with Lyudmila Gurchenko’s unforgettable dancing and singing. Made several years before I was even born, Carnival Night was so popular that by the time I started watching movies it was still regularly playing in theatres as well as being shown on television. Here, a buoyant and beautiful Lydmila Gurchenko leads a group of amateur actors to undermine the plans of the Culture Ministry and its boring leadership in order to turn a New Year’s Eve celebration into an exciting vibrant extravaganza, with confetti, sparklers and crackers. It was only later, in my teenage years when I started visiting the Sofia Cinémathèque, that I realized how Carnival Night in many aspects replicated Grigoriy Aleksandrov’s musical extravaganzas of the 1930s. -

The Russian Cinematic Culture Oksana Bulgakova The cinema has always been subject to keen scrutiny by Russia's rulers. As early as the beginning of this century Russia's last czar, Nikolai Romanov, attempted to nationalize this new and, in his view, threatening medium: "I have always insisted that these cinema-booths are dangerous institutions. Any number of bandits could commit God knows what crimes there, yet they say the people go in droves to watch all kinds of rubbish; I don't know what to do about these places." [1] The plan for a government monopoly over cinema, which would ensure control of production and consumption and thereby protect the Russian people from moral ruin, was passed along to the Duma not long before the February revolution of 1917. -

An Outstanding Work in the Service of Propaganda: the Case of Mikhail Romm's The Dream Prof. Andrzej Zawistowski Can the story of September 1939 be told without mentioning soldiers, weapons or war? Can aggression be shown as historical justice? Can a propaganda film using the narrative of Stalinist propaganda, move and enchant an audience today? Historians wish to believe that they have a monopoly on speaking about the past. In reality, however, it is popular culture that has the greatest influence on creating an image of past years. Hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people reach for the works of historians. At the same time, a picture created by a novel or a film reaches tens or even hundreds of millions of people. That is why today the most famous of the 'Righteous Among the Nations' is Oskar Schindler, the protagonist of Steven Spielberg's film. For many Poles who grew up in the 1970s and 1980s, the Second World War is associated with television characters from that era: a tank crew identified by tactical number 102 and an agent codenamed J-23. Such examples are numerous. Films give history a face. They are evocative, arouse sympathy or antipathy and remain in the memory as a symbol. Cinema and history In 2016 the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation recommended that schools take part in '100 lectures: the history of home cinema for school pupils'. For this project, a list of 100 Soviet and Russian feature films recognized as classics was prepared. Each of these films was enriched with a brief introduction in which people from contemporary Russian cinema, such as directors, actors and critics, introduced students to the world of a particular film.
