Super Bowl Advertisers Embrace Diversity
SUPER BOWL ADVERTISERS EMBRACE DIVERSITY... CAUTIOUSLY Big Game marketers look to better represent women and minorities without offending anyone By Jeanine Poggi This year’s crop of Super Bowl commercials will feature two drag queens, an all-female cast, Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, and a “Queer Eye” guy. It's a step in better representing modern society by casting more diverse ethnicities, lifestyles and cultural perspectives in the Big Game. It’s an effort that shouldn’t further fracture a divided nation, but Sabra Chief Marketing Officer Jason Levine says, “Inclusive Credit: Illustration by Tam Nguyen marketing, even under the best intentions, can find itself feeding into the divisiveness of the country.” And if there is one goal nearly all Super …of the celebrities that appeared Bowl LIV advertisers have, it’s to not alienate a particular group or political in Super Bowl LIII commercials, ideology. 25 were male while just 13 were female, according to data from To that end, those who are at least attempting to recast Super Bowl E-Poll Market Research. commercials, which historically have not been friendly to women or minorities, are doing so in the least controversial way possible--—by cushioning them with humor. Drag Queens During Super Bowl
Urgent Message From One Million Moms: Drag queens to make historical debut during Super Bowl LIV The NFL and Fox are set to make history this year by airing a Super Bowl ad that features drag queens. It’s will be the first commercial of its kind in Super Bowl history, and One Million Moms is asking that it be removed from the advertising lineup immediately. An ad promoting drag queens is not what we had in mind when urging the NFL to keep the Super Bowl LIV commercials and halftime entertainment family-friendly. The Sabra Hummus ad features drag queens Kim Chi and Miz Cracker, former contestants on RuPaul’s Drag Race. One is snacking on hummus while the other is trying to fit a football helmet over his perfectly teased hair without causing helmet hair. The tagline: “Hair We Go 02.02.20.” Sabra Dipping Company LLC is choosing to push an agenda of sexual confusion instead of promoting its actual product. The PC-inclusive ad blurs the biological distinctions between male and female. Normalizing this lifestyle is contrary to what conservative, Christian parents are teaching their children about God’s design for sexuality. Thanks Sabra! Now parents have to explain to their confused children! The NFL has not been very adept at dealing with controversies, and this year is no different. Please sign our petition to the NFL and FOX requesting Super Bowl LIV be kept suitable for all ages, since children will also be watching the game this Sunday, Feb. 2. To Take Action, sign the petition to the NFL and FOX urging the Sabra Hummus drag queen advertisement be canceled and removed from the Super Bowl commercial lineup immediately. -

Drag Race continues to become more profitable and successful by the year and arguably shapes cultural ideas of queer performances in manifold ways. This project investigates the impacts of exploitative labour practices that emerge from the show, the commodification of drag when represented on screen, and how the show influences drag and queer performances off screen. -
The Sochi Olympics, Celebration Capitalism and Homonationalist Pride1
1 The Sochi Olympics, celebration capitalism and homonationalist pride1 Ann Travers and Mary Shearman Simon Fraser University In July 2013 the Russian government passed two anti-LGBT laws that drew international criticism. Russia’s impending hosting of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games inspired more sustained international attention to these laws than might have otherwise been the case. In this article, we apply the mutually supporting frameworks of queer/trans necropolitics and celebration capitalism to a content analysis of coverage of the Sochi Olympics in the Advocate and Xtra, the leading LGBT publications in the United States and Canada respectively. We contend that the Advocate and Xtra participated in a homonationalist process of manufacturing consent as the USA, Canada, the West in general and the Olympic Games were glorified while issues relating to racism and colonialism in Russia, the USA and Canada were ignored and these geopolitical formations in general were falsely generalized as safe havens for LGBT people. This conclusion is based on two key observations. First, we noted complete silence about racist and ethnic violence in Russia and in the specific site of Sochi in the Advocate and only one (unelaborated) acknowledgement of Sochi as a historical site of ethnic cleansing in Xtra. Second, in spite of the recent expansion of formal citizenship rights for LGBT people, more uniformly in Canada than in the USA, Advocate and Xtra coverage failed to acknowledge the dissonance between American and Canadian governments positioning themselves as LGBT and human rights leaders and the harm these National Security States continue to deliver to racialized, impoverished and gender and sexual minority populations. -

“I'm a Mountain Biking Vampire Witch from the Future!” Queer Decolonial
“I’m a Mountain Biking Vampire Witch From the Future!” Queer Decolonial Killjoys in Queer Studies and Politics by Charlotte Theresa Hoelke A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctorate in Philosophy in Canadian Studies Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2018, Charlotte Theresa Hoelke Hoelke, 1 Abstract This thesis asks how queer scholarship and politics will maintain a radically queer critical edge, specifically an unsettling, decolonial approach that does not take for granted the continuance of queer liberal and settler colonial structures. A longstanding debate in queer studies and politics is the tension between queer assimilation vs queer radicalism. However, even the radical unsettling approaches that discuss radical queer futurity (Muñoz, and Edelman) often do not centre the important context of settler colonialism, even while critiquing normativity and imagining better futures. So how do we locate examples of imaginings of queer decolonial futures: ones that account for settler colonialism? To find out, I chose to examine selected performances in specific popular “silly archives of unhappy feelings,” and found complex examples of uncanny, at times monstrous, performances by artists (Trixie Mattel, Katya Zamoldchikova and Miss Chief Eagle Testickle). These artists, I argue, exemplify and embody the characteristics of what I call “Queer Decolonial Killjoys” (QDKs). Building on Ahmed’s concepts of “Feminist Killjoys,” and “Unhappy Queers,” I demonstrate that the artists I discuss not only unsettle gendered, sexualized, and racialized norms (à la Ahmed), but that they also act as Decolonial Killjoys because they use complex performative strategies to also critique settler colonialism and queer liberalism.
