Antića, S. Vulić, J. Čapo, S. Blažetina, M. Perić, M. Sopte, T. Nuić i D. Barača. INTRODUCTION ur Beautiful Homeland has returned to the political and cultural milieu it has always been a part of. On December 9th of this year Croatia signed the EU Accession Treaty in Brussels and is set to join on July 1st, 2013. President Josipović and Prime Minister OKosor signed the Treaty and the Final Act, an Intergovernmental Conference document detailing everything agreed upon over six years of negotiation. The ceremony at which the treaty was signed by the heads of 27 EU countries and top Croatian offi cials shifted Croatia from candidate to acceding country status. It is a historic act, similar in importance to Parliament’s decision to proclaim independence. This year’s CHF Almanac is, as a result, focused on the challenges of EU membership, the legacies of great Croatians and the new homeland environment, with an interesting take on these topics by political scientist B. Skoko. Language policy and practice in a multilingual Europe, where ours is now the 24th offi cial language, is the subject of a study by Australian linguist of Croatian heritage Jim Hlavač. There are many Croatian-speaking people abroad — about as many Croatians and people of Croatian heritage live in some thirty countries around the world as do in the country of origin. The sincerity or lack thereof of appeals for linguistic equality is a sensitive issue for an emigrant country forming a small linguistic community. Languages are essential to achieving the strategic goals of education for all and to achieve Croatian development goals. There are currently 13.325 pupils learning our language and culture in the emigrant communities abroad and a signifi cantly larger number in our minority communities in Central and Southeast Europe. The current situation with textbooks and programmes is detailed by Lada Kanajet Šimić, who heads the CHF education department and who has affi rmed the Croatian Internet Course this year. On its sixtieth anniversary the Croatian Heritage Foundation and its partners have taken a step forward implementing the latest information technology in Croatian language instruction. Along with European landscapes and the topic of language in the Croatian communities abroad, this year’s almanac also features a number of articles on the cultural and social life of our emigrants around the world, penned by prominent university professors from Zagreb, Rijeka and Pécs to Melbourne, including authors Hlavač and Colic-Peisker. The 2012 Croatian Emigrant Almanac features a wealth of creative work by our people from various walks of life that will be nurtured in the future on the basis of a newly adopted Act on Croatia’s relations with Croatians abroad. The thematic sections Signs Of The Times, Croatian Philological Horizons, Bridges, A History, Heritage, Spirituality, Science and New Books offer a wealth of contributions by leading writers. Among the thirty-four articles are those by long-time contributing authors Lj. Antić, S. Vulić, J. Čapo, S. Blažetin, M. Perić, M. Sopta, T. Nuić and D. Barač. The cover of this year’s almanac is inspired by a donation made this summer from Vienna to Zagreb’s Modern Gallery of the only portrait of Dora Pejačević, the fi rst Croatian woman composer, painted by the famed M. Vanka. The emergence of age-related chronic diseases within the United States has led to the direct increase of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) as well as other neurological diseases which ultimately contribute to the development of dementia within the general population. To be specific, age-related chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, and kidney disease contribute greatly to the advancement and rapid progression of dementia. Furthermore, unmodifiable risk factors such as advancing age and genetics as well as modifiable risk factors such as socioeconomic status, educational attainment, exercise, and diet further contribute to the development of dementia. Current statistics and research show that minority populations such as Hispanic Americans in the United States face the greatest burden of dementia due to the increase in the prevalence of overall population age, predisposing genetics, age-related chronic diseases, low socioeconomic status, as well as poor lifestyle choices and habits.

Winter Afternoon, n.d. Maximillian Vanka (Croatian), (1889–1963) oil on academy board H. 20 x W. 24 inches Courtesy of Bucks County Intermediate Unit #22, Pennsylvania Biography Maximillian Vanka was born in Croatia in 1889. Croatia is a Central European and Mediterranean country bordering the Adriatic Sea. He may have been the son Austro-Hungarian nobility, but no one knows for sure. Maxo (his nickname) Vanka was raised by peasants until the age of eight. Maxo felt very connected to the history, mythology and customs of his homeland. Maximilian Vanka studied at the Zagreb Academy of Art in the capitol of Croatia, and the Royal Academy of Beaux Arts in Brussels in Northern Europe. He soon became one of the country's best portrait artists and leading painters, as well as a highly respected teacher at the Academy of Beaux Arts in Zagreb. He was celebrated as the finest Yugoslavian portraitist in the 1920's and 1930's. He exhibited throughout Europe, receiving such honors as the 'Palme Academique' of the French Legion of Honor, before moving to the United States in 1934. When Vanka came to America, he first settled in New York City. This was during a very difficult time in American history known as the Depression. He wore old clothes and traveled through the city painting homeless people and laborers. His paintings show the sad lives of these people, yet his style makes them look important in the paintings. In doing this he wanted to show that all people have something to contribute to the world.

  • Reading a Painting: Maxo Vanka's Collage
READING A PAINTING: MAXO VANKA’S COLLAGE »WORLD WAR II« Henry A. Christian Tine T. K urent Only within the last few years has there begun a measurement of the quantity and quality of theoeuvre of the Croatian artist Maksimilian - usually called Maxo - Vanka (1889-1963). That assessment-in-progress now makes possible the determination of several geographical and chronological categories of Vanka’s production. The Ilegitimate child of Austro-Hungarian nobility, Vanka was educated in Zagreb and Brussels, gained the protection of Queen Elizabeth of the Belgians, served in the Belgian Red Cross as a stretcher bearer, and finished the Great War as a pacifist in Zagreb. The subject today of a second look in his native land, the artist’s Croatian work - known in the United States to a few of Croatian descent - represents a primary category of Vanka materials. A professor at the Academy of Art in Zagreb, under the directorship of the famous sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, Vanka became known throughout Western Europe for precise and distinctive portraits, landscapes - especially scenes on the island of Korčula - and accurate renderings of various regional peasant dress and symbols, such as the religious procession presentation in the Modem Gallery in Zagreb, the wedding scene now in the upper hall of the Zagreb Old Town Hall, or the stunning lone, standing woman in white in the small gallery adjoining the monument to the Peasant Revolts at Gornja Stubica. A second category has its origin in 1934 when Vanka and his American wife Margaret (nee Stetten) and their daughter Peggy visited the United States and a year later decided to take permanent residence in America despite Vanka’s reluctance to be within the strong financial and social aura of his wife’s family.
