He emigrated in 1884 to the United States, where he became a naturalized citizen. He worked for a short time at the Edison Machine Works in New York City before he struck out on his own. With the help of partners to finance and market his ideas, Tesla set up laboratories and companies in New York to develop a range of electrical and mechanical devices. His alternating current (AC) induction motor and related polyphase AC patents, licensed by Westinghouse Electric in 1888, earned him a considerable amount of money and became the cornerstone of the polyphase system which that company eventually marketed. -
Architecture of the 2Oth Century
Architecture of the 2oth Century The present book is a somewhat different overview of 2oth cen tury architecture in Slovenia. The selection of presented buildings is austere since it was dictated by the purpose of the book and its scope. The selected works are not only the outstanding buildings that came into existence in Slovenia in the last century. The authors of the book, architects and art historians, have selected typical creations of the past, characteristic evidence of progress in land development, theo retical thinking and architecture in our surroundings. The purpose of this selection is to encourage public debate and conservation evalua tion, and to facilitate better and more professional protection of all the outstanding historical buildings of the 2oth century, not only cul tural monuments and the creations of famous authors, the mainstays of the development of fine arts. The artistic value was one of the prin ciples of selection, since individual buildings and entities are to be considered as to their function, social value and historical relevance. We attempted to include as many architects as possible and all re gions of Slovenia. The chronological context of the book is defined as the period af ter the First World War, since the architecture created before 1920 has already been presented in another publication within The Euro pean Heritage Days Series. The final chronologicallimit of the selec tion was dose to the year 2000, although it is usually preferred to conclude the period somewhat earlier and evaluate the artefacts from a more distant point in time. The chronological definition of the be: ginning was further conditioned by a new creative enthusiasm after the First World War and the establishment of the first university in Slovenia in Ljubljana with a department of architecture. -

Italy in Ivan Meštrović’s and Bogdan Radica’s discourses between the two World Wars di Maciej Czerwiński In this article the activity and discourses of two Dalmatian public figures are taken into consideration: the sculptor Ivan Meštrović and the journalist Bogdan Radica. They both had an enormous influence on how the image of Italy was created and disseminated in Yugoslavia, in particular in the 1920s and 1930s. The analysis of their discourses is interpreted in terms of the concept of Dalmatia within a wider Mediterranean basin which also refers to two diverse conceptualizations of Yugoslavism, cultural and politi- cal. Meštrović’s vision of Dalmatia/Croatia/Yugoslavia was based on his rural hinterland idiom enabling him to embrace racial and cultural Yugoslavism. In contrast, Radica, in spite of having a pro-Yugoslav orientation during the same period, did not believe in race, so for him the idea of Croat-Serb unity was more a political issue (to a lesser extent a cultural one). Keywords: Dalmatia, Yugoslav-Italian relationships, Croatianness, Yugoslavism, Bor- derlands Parole chiave: Dalmazia, Relazioni Jugoslavia-Italia, Croaticità, Jugoslavismo, Aree di confine Introduction This article takes into consideration the activity and discourses of the sculptor Ivan Meštrović and the journalist Bogdan Radica1. The choice of these two figures from Dalmatia, though very different in terms of their profession and political status in the interwar Yugoslav state (1918-41), has an important justification. Not only they both were influenced by Italian culture and heritage (displaying the typical Dalmatian ambivalence towards politics), but they also evaluated Italian heritage and politics in the Croatian/Yugoslav public sphere. -

17TH WESTLICHT PHOTO AUCTION Friday, March 9, 2018, 5 Pm
17TH WESTLICHT PHOTO AUCTION Friday, March 9, 2018, 5 pm “Schönheit und Abgrund“ (beauty and the abyss) is the motto of this year’s celebrations of Modernism in Vienna. Gustav Klimt was one of the protagonists who shaped the intellectually vibrant, cosmopolitan city around 1900. He died a hundred years ago. In the photograph taken by Moriz Nähr in 1912, Gustav Klimt poses very much alive and not the least bit abyssal in his studio, petting his cat and glancing at the camera with vivid and warm-hearted eyes. It is one of his most famous portraits (estimate: 24,000-28,000 Euro) and is now on offer at the upcoming 17th WestLicht Photo Auction, only one of the highlights among more than 200 photographs and complementary rare treasures from the medium of the photobook. Klimt is accompanied by further Austrian masters of photography from the early 20th century like Rudolf Koppitz, Heinrich Kühn, Ferdinand Schmutzer, Madame d’Ora and Trude Fleischmann. The latter produced an enchanting portrait of the famous state opera dancer Tilly Losch, which is estimated at 2,500 to 3,000 Euro. Like Klimt, Czech photographer František Drtikol was a master of the female nude. Two works by him, “Untitled (Nude with shadow)”, 1926 (estimate: 9,000-10,000 Euro) and “Untitled (Backlit nude)”, c. 1926 (estimate: 7,000-9,000 Euro), are up for auction. Both come from the holdings of German photographer Grete Leistikow and display a cubist and art déco influence in their geometric elements, the expressively dynamic poses and the dramatic lighting. -
