FINDING YOUR VISION: OAXACA, MEXICO 2018 WITH ALEX WEBB AND REBECCA NORRIS WEBB FINDING YOUR VISION: OAXACA, MEXICO 2018 WITH ALEX WEBB AND REBECCA NORRIS WEBB This workshop will be about finding your own unique vision of the airy southern Mexico city of Oaxaca by using the camera to explore the region in a direct, spontaneous way. Open to both serious amateurs and professionals alike, from fine art photographers to documentary photographers, from college students to seasoned photographers, it is a workshop that will emphasize the development of your own personal way of seeing photographically. This workshop will also be about learning how to edit your work intuitively, and will include discussions about how to take your photography to the next level. NOTE: This is a workshop for photographers who collaborate with the world, not for those who dramatically alter their photographs digitally. DATES: ACCOMMODATIONS: Parador de Alcala Hotel. Artist Resources – Alfred Stieglitz (American, 1864-1946) Alfred Stieglitz Collection and Archive, Art Institute of Chicago The Key Set Stieglitz Collection, National Gallery of Art Stieglitz at The Getty Stieglitz and Camera Work collection, Princeton University Art Museum Explore The National Gallery’s timeline of all known Stieglitz exhibitions, spanning from 1888 to 1946. View archival documents from MoMA’s 1947 exhibition, which comprised two floors and paired Stieglitz’s photography with his private art collection. The following year, MoMA introduced Photo-Secession (American Photography 1902-1910), organized by surviving co-founder Edward Steichen and featuring photography from the the journal Camera Work. The 1999 PBS American Master’s documentary, Alfred Stieglitz: The Eloquent Eye, charts the photographer’s immense influence and innovation, featuring intimate interviews with his widow, the painter Georgia O’Keefe, museum curators, and scholars. “What is of greatest importance is to hold a moment, to record something so completely that those who see it will relive an equivalent of what has been expressed,“ Stieglitz reflects in recorded audio of his writing, which is threaded throughout the film. Stieglitz, 1934 Photographer: Imogen Cunningham Smithsonian Magazine profiled Stieglitz in 2002 in honor of The National Gallery’s retrospective. Stieglitz was the subject of the NGA’s first exhibition dedicated exclusively to photography, in 1958. In 2011, The Metropolitan Museum of Art debuted the first large-scale exhibition of Stieglitz’s personal collection, acquired by the museum in 1949. Over 200 works display the photographer’s influence with his contemporaries and successive generations, including, among others, works by: Georgia O'Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Constantin Brancusi, Vasily Kandinsky, and Francis Picabia. -

2019 Annual Report
2019 ANNUAL REPORT Dear Friends, This has been another year of unparalleled exhibitions and performances, a celebration of what’s possible in our new home and with the support of our community. At the beginning of 2019, we were in the last few weeks of the inaugural exhibition at 120 College Street, Between Form and Content: Perspectives on Jacob Lawrence and Black Mountain College, which was a major accomplishment in its scope and its expansion of community partnerships. Next, we presented an intimate look at the school’s political dimensions, both internal and external, through the exhibition Politics at Black Mountain College. During the same time period, the exhibition Aaron Siskind: A Painter’s Photographer and Works on Paper by BMC Artists revealed the photographer’s elegant approach to abstraction alongside works by others in his circle of influence. From June through August, our galleries filled with sound as part of Materials, Sounds + Black Mountain College, an exploration of contemporary experimental and material-based processes rooted in theories and practices developed at Black Mountain College. We closed out the year with VanDerBeek + VanDerBeek, an exhibition that bridges the historic and contemporary through an intergenerational artistic conversation. 2019 also marked the 100th birthday of Merce Cunningham, and 100 years since the founding of the Bauhaus, which closed in the same year Black Mountain College opened, seeding the latter with its faculty and utopian values. Both centennials sparked global celebrations, transcending geographic and disciplinary boundaries to honor the impact of courageous communities and collaborators. Mond^anuary 1*, 1963 TELEPHONE: CIRCLE 5-8900 PRESS PREVIEW: Monday, January Ik, I963 11 a.m. - k p.m. The Intimate World of Lyonel Feininger, an exhibition of 60 watercolors, drawings, prints and 108 toys opening at the Museum of Modern Art, Tuesday, January 15, will show a virtually unkncn aspect of the famous American artist. Known as an artist of formal achievements, Feininger is revealed in this show as a man of humor, warmth and sometimes pathos. His watercolors, drawings, prints, comic strips, toys and even letters, are peopled with creatures, real extraordinary and always human. Most of the works have been lent by the artist's widow and family and have never been shown before. The exhibition, selected by William S. Lieberman, Curator of Drawings and Prints, continues through March 12. Although hi© career was spent mostly in Germany, much of Feininger's art was inspired by memories of his childhood in New York City, where he was born in I87I and died in I956, The Second Avenue Elevated, the New York Central locomotives, the schooners, motor-sailers and steamboats in the harbor lingered long in his mind and nourished the iconography of his art. He himself wrote: "I don't paint a picture in the traditional sense. From deep within arises an almost painful urge for the realization of inner experiences, an overwhelming longir~, an unearthly nostalgia overcomes me at times to bring them to light out of the past." Such feelings for America are revealed in his thematic devotion to boats, as, seen here in some dozen compositions ranging from antique galleons to motor yachts, A similar nostalgia perhaps inspired the two comic strip serials, The Kin-der-Kids and Wee Willie Winkle's World, which he sent each week from Germany in I906 to the Chicago Sunday Tribune. -

This resource aims to investigate the wealth of photographic portraiture and to examine closely the effect of painted portraits on the technique of photography invented in the nineteenth century. This resource was developed by the Art Resource Developer in the Learning Department in the Gallery, working closely with staff who work with the Photographs Collection to produce a detailed and practical guide for working with these portraits.
