With impressive installation photos and never-before-seen archival material the publication presents Barlow’s unique oeuvre from her early works until the present day. “That something could be permanent is 7 perhaps only an illusion.” Phyllida Barlow The British artist’s career is as unusual as her works, which radically put the contemporary concept of sculpture to the test. Today Barlow is regarded as one of the most prominent artists in Britain, but she achieved her breakthrough only recently. She dismantled many of her works after the end of the exhibition and recycled them again to create new sculptures. The major retrospective shows drawings and pioneering works from all her creative phases, including new PHYLLIDA BARLOW sculptures formed from key works which had already been destroyed. Ed. This important document of art-historical literature has long been out of print, but it is now available once more in a revised edition with an updated catalogue raisonné. At the same time this magni- ficent volume provides an insight into the artist’s life through letters, sketches and documents. 8 Finally available once more – the great 9 Schiele publication by Rudolf Leopold Rudolf Leopold recognised back in the 1950s Schiele’s outstanding significance for art. He was largely responsible for ensuring that the artist received the place he deserved in art history and public awareness. The monograph presented Schiele’s paintings, watercolors and drawings chronologically in large-format color plates. It is complemented by a EGON SCHIELE profound examination of his motifs, studies, sketches and documents and PAINTINGS, WATER COLORS, provides a comprehensive overview. The current edition pays tribute to DRAWINGS Leopold’s achievement and the revised catalogue raisonné reflects the current state of research. Author: Rudolf Leopold Ed. The ivory from its tusks has been in great demand across the centuries and through- out all cultures. What sort of material is it? How has it been used in the past and the present? And what can we do today to protect the world’s largest mammals from poachers? This lavishly illustrated volume embarks on a journey through cultural history and takes up a contemporary position. The controversy of ivory: between 11 cruel exploitation and captivating art Ivory fascinates. As long as 40,000 years ago people carved mammoth tusks into artful figures and musical instruments, and it remains popular as a material to this day. Ivory polarises, because the animal’s tusks also stand for injustice and violence. The exploitation of man and nature, the threatened extinction of the elephant, poaching and organised crime are phenomena which we associate with ivory. The publication approaches the TERRIBLY BEAUTIFUL subject critically and poses the question as to our responsibility in our ELEPHANT. MAN. IVORY dealings with both animal and material. Ed. In 1985, the young photographer Abe Frajndlich took on this challenge. We can say this much: it was not a job that could be accomplished in one shot. The Shoot- ing presents a photographer’s attempt to zero in on a legend. The photography book to mark the 15 100th birthday of literature’s “enfant terrible” “That face!” Glenn Esterly exclaims in his essay “The Pock-marked Poetry of Charles Bukowski” included in this volume. Everything fascinating about this monumental author is concentrated in his “look”, as impressively demonstrated by the photographs of Abe Frajndlich, many of them previously unpublished. Portraying Bukowski in color and black and white, he gained the writer’s confidence to the point that he was eventually invited to the wedding of Bukowski and Linda Lee Beighle. Telling the story of this meeting, the publication reproduces the various portrait series, culminating in the photographs of the wedding. Abe Frajndlich is an American photographer known above all for his portraits of celebrities. As a photographer and reporter, he has worked for the magazines of Life, Der Spiegel, the London Observer, the New York Times Magazine, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and others. Glenn Esterly was a freelance American journalist. He contributed to, and worked for, various BUKOWSKI newspapers and magazines, including Rolling Stone. THE SHOOTING. BY ABE FRAJNDLICH Eds. • 17TH WESTLICHT PHOTO AUCTION Friday, March 9, 2018, 5 Pm
17TH WESTLICHT PHOTO AUCTION Friday, March 9, 2018, 5 pm “Schönheit und Abgrund“ (beauty and the abyss) is the motto of this year’s celebrations of Modernism in Vienna. Gustav Klimt was one of the protagonists who shaped the intellectually vibrant, cosmopolitan city around 1900. He died a hundred years ago. In the photograph taken by Moriz Nähr in 1912, Gustav Klimt poses very much alive and not the least bit abyssal in his studio, petting his cat and glancing at the camera with vivid and warm-hearted eyes. It is one of his most famous portraits (estimate: 24,000-28,000 Euro) and is now on offer at the upcoming 17th WestLicht Photo Auction, only one of the highlights among more than 200 photographs and complementary rare treasures from the medium of the photobook. Klimt is accompanied by further Austrian masters of photography from the early 20th century like Rudolf Koppitz, Heinrich Kühn, Ferdinand Schmutzer, Madame d’Ora and Trude Fleischmann. The latter produced an enchanting portrait of the famous state opera dancer Tilly Losch, which is estimated at 2,500 to 3,000 Euro. Like Klimt, Czech photographer František Drtikol was a master of the female nude. Two works by him, “Untitled (Nude with shadow)”, 1926 (estimate: 9,000-10,000 Euro) and “Untitled (Backlit nude)”, c. 1926 (estimate: 7,000-9,000 Euro), are up for auction. Both come from the holdings of German photographer Grete Leistikow and display a cubist and art déco influence in their geometric elements, the expressively dynamic poses and the dramatic lighting.

THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY The Research Library of the Mack Lee Gallery 2,633 titles in circa 3,140 volumes Lee Gallery Photography Research Library Comprising over 3,100 volumes of monographs, exhibition catalogues and periodicals, the Lee Gallery Photography Research Library provides an overview of the history of photography, with a focus on the nineteenth century, in particular on the first three decades after the invention photography. Strengths of the Lee Library include American, British, and French photography and photographers. The publications on French 19th- century material (numbering well over 100), include many uncommon specialized catalogues from French regional museums and galleries, on the major photographers of the time, such as Eugène Atget, Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Marville, Félix Nadar, Charles Nègre, and others. In addition, it is noteworthy that the library includes many small exhibition catalogues, which are often the only publication on specific photographers’ work, providing invaluable research material. The major developments and evolutions in the history of photography are covered, including numerous titles on the pioneers of photography and photographic processes such as daguerreotypes, calotypes, and the invention of negative-positive photography. The Lee Gallery Library has great depth in the Pictorialist Photography aesthetic movement, the Photo- Secession and the circle of Alfred Stieglitz, as evidenced by the numerous titles on American photography of the early 20th-century. This is supplemented by concentrations of books on the photography of the American Civil War and the exploration of the American West. Photojournalism is also well represented, from war documentary to Farm Security Administration and LIFE photography.

Much contemporary writing on media and education examines best practices or individual learning processes, is fired by techno-optimism or techno-pessimism about young people’s use of technology, or focuses exclusively on digital media. Relatively few studies attend – empirically or conceptually – to the embeddedness of educational media in contemporary cultural, social and political processes. The Palgrave Studies in Educational Media series aims to explore textbooks and other educational media as sites of cultural contestation and socio-political forces. Drawing on local and global perspectives, and attending to the digital, non-digital and post- digital, the series explores how these media are entangled with broader continuities and changes in today’s society, with how media and media practices play a role in shaping identifications, subjectivations, inclusions and exclusions, economies and global political projects.

Contributions to A History of Photography in Austria Edited by Monika Faber for Photoinstitut Bonartes · Vienna and Walter Moser for the Photographic Collection of the Albertina · Vienna Volume 10 Elizabeth Cronin Heimat Photography in Austria A Politicized Vision of Peasants and Skiers Photoinstitut Bonartes · Vienna Albertina · Vienna Fotohof edition · Salzburg Preface This book series is dedicated to those friends whose unending trust and generous engagement have accompanied and supported the Photographic Collection of the Albertina and Photoinstitut Bonartes from the beginning. Alpine landscapes and rural forms of life signified more than just a geogra- phic peculiarity in interwar Austria. The identification model of the Ständestaat’s anti-modernism could also be capitalized on as an idyll with tourist potential. Folklore and winter sports entered into a continuing bond here. It was no big step from the apotheosis of hard work and the admiration of traditional handicraft to the glorification of a patriarchal society of preindustrial character. Whether in the modernist Austrian pavilion at the World’s Exposition in Paris in 1937, in lavish photographic volumes, or in the up-to-date medium of the illustrated magazine: Heimat photography brought forth and deepened visual leitmotifs for this view of Austria far into the postwar reconstruction era. We thank Elizabeth Cronin for developing her dissertation into this publication, which places essential holdings of the photographic collections of the Albertina and the Photoinstitut Bonartes in a wider context for the first time. The project would not have come about without Michael Ponstingl’s enthusiastic as well as efficient commitment.
