Tuga Tarle Oda ljubavi pod čizmom ideologije Kretanja 13/14 _ 3 editorial: n anticipation of the establishment of dance education at the university le- vel in Croatia, which will, according to the founders’ announcements, bring Itogether practical (i. e. classical and contemporary dance techniques) and theoretical dance studies in one institution, Kretanja (Movements), as the only Croatian journal exclusively dedicated to dance art, has from its very fi rst issue (in 2002) published a corpus of texts that can be used as a kind of basis or in- troduction into dance theory, and which should have an important place in the envisaged institution and serve as a platform for institutional and non-instituti- onal researchers of dance. Throughout issues dealing with special themes whe- re dance is positioned in relation to literature, photography, dramaturgy, fi lm or visual arts, along with translations of essays of the most important international dance theoreticians, we have introduced texts that present different examples of knowledge about dance on the path to the much needed dynamically organised dance studies, and we have also presented outstanding creations from the Croa- tian dance scene and promoted domestic authors. -

ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: SLAVE LEGACIES, AMBIVALENT MODERNITY: STREET COMMERCE AND THE TRANSITION TO FREE LABOR IN RIO DE JANEIRO, 1850-1925 Patricia Acerbi, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Dissertation directed by: Professor Barbara Weinstein Department of History This project is a history of street vending during the transition from enslaved to free labor in the capital of the most enduring slave society of the Americas. Street vending – long the province of African slaves and free blacks – became in these years a site of expanded (European) immigrant participation and shifting state disciplinary policies. My dissertation contends that during the gradual transition to free labor, urban policing and the judicial system in the city of Rio came to target “criminality” rather than illicit or improper vending practices. Disciplinary measures established by criminal law focused on correcting individuals who were peddlers and not inadequately regulated street commercial activity. Thus, the language of citizenship appeared in court cases to both establish and resist negative characterizations of street vendors while a gradual marginalization of street commerce occurred within the framework of citizenship building. The practice of street commerce during this transitional era reveals a historical process that produced and transformed notions of legitimate work and public order as well as the racial segmentation of the labor force. Street vending, I argue, became a strategy of subsistence among the post-abolition urban poor, who came to their own understandings of freedom, free labor, and citizenship. Elite and popular attitudes toward street vending reflected the post- abolition political economy of exclusion and inclusion, which peddlers did not experience as mutually exclusive but rather as a dialectic of an ambivalent modernity. -

PETZVAL'S LENS AND CAMERA by Rudolf Kingslake Joseph Max Petzval was born on January 6, 1807, in Hungary of German parentage; he died 84 years later in September 1891. Being a member of the mathematics faculty of the University of Vienna, he naturally approached the problem of lens design from a mathematical rather than from an empir ical standpoint, which probably accounted in part for his suc cess. He actually designed two lenses in 1839, the Portrait lens which he immediately commissioned P. F. von Voigtlander to make, and the Orthoscopic lens which was not manufactured T THE OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT of the Daguerreotype until 1856. Petvzal's interest in optics continued throughout the A process in 1839, Austria was represented by Professor A. rest of his life, and he reported in 1843 that "by order of the F. von Ettingshausen. He was so impressed with the possibilities General-Director Archduke Ludwig, he was assisted in his of photography that upon his return to Vienna, he induced his calculations for several years by two officers and eight friend and colleague the mathematician Joseph Petzval to undertake the design of a wide-aperture lens suitable for por traiture. Petzval, then 33 years old, devoted himeslf enthusiasti cally to the problem and was amazingly successful. He used a well-corrected telescope objective the right way round for his front component, and added an airspaced doublet behind it, the rear doublet being mathematically designed to give sharp de finition and to flatten the field. The formula was handed to the old-established Viennese optician Voigtlander, who first supplied the lens to a focal length of 150 mm and an aperture of f/3.6, mounted in a conical metal camera having a circular ground-glass focusing screen 94 mm diameter with a focusing magnifier permanently installed behind it. -

Hoffmann cultivated an exemplary modern lifestyle model and focused on aesthetics and beauty as the central parameters of modern design. The exhibition JOSEF HOFFMANN: Progress Through Beauty revisits every facet of the almost 60-year creative output produced by this influential global pioneer in architecture and design around 1900 and enriches the systematic research into and dissemination of his legacy. With an initially puristic design vocabulary, Josef Hoffmann carved out his position as one of the protagonists of Viennese Modernism. His ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk—or total work of art—and his outstanding buildings like Stoclet House in Brussels (1905– 1911), now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, left a mark on the architectural and artistic landscape both nationally and internationally. Although this all-round designer has featured in every important exhibition on Viennese Modernism, only sections of his oeuvre have been analyzed in full. To mark this year’s anniversary the exhibition’s team of curators—Matthias Boeckl, Rainald Franz, and Christian Witt-Dörring—set themselves the task of closing the gaps that still exist in the research by using at times unknown sources and by updating his catalogue raisonné. -

The Imperial Condition of Photography in Palestine: Archives, Looting, and the Figure of the Infiltrator ARIELLA AZOULAY In front of many cameras and representatives of the international community that surround him, unexpectedly, and outside of any protocol that was prepared for this occasion, an elderly Palestinian man dares to stop, to withdraw his consent to leave his home and ceases to move. This old man is my companion in exploring the archives and attempt- ing to understand its implication in the invention of the figure of “infiltrator.” Together, we refrain from studying his figure, as defined by the nation-state that forced him out of his home. Halting precisely where many cameras were present, this person threatens to spoil the orchestrated spectacle of Arabs “leaving of their will.” Together, we study the linkage between the expulsion of several hundred thousands of Palestinians and the looting of a vast treasure of books, documents, and photographs from Palestinians in 1948 and their transformation into “abandoned files” in the newly constructed Israeli archives at the same time. The article proposes to relate to the ongoing looting of archives not merely as a violation of Palestinian property and rights, but rather as a continuous performance of national sov- ereignty. Sovereignty is performed as the continued project of partition of populations into distinct, differentiated groups, whereby violence among the two groups is both the pretext and the effect. Reputations made and lost: the writing of histories of early twentieth- century British photography and the case of Walter Benington by Robert William Crow A thesis submitted to the University of Gloucestershire in accordance with the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Technology January 2015 Abstract Walter Benington (1872-1936) was a major British photographer, a member of the Linked Ring and a colleague of international figures such as F H Evans, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen and Alvin Langdon Coburn. He was also a noted portrait photographer whose sitters included Albert Einstein, Dame Ellen Terry, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and many others. He is, however, rarely noted in current histories of photography. Beaumont Newhall’s 1937 exhibition Photography 1839-1937 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York is regarded by many respected critics as one of the foundation-stones of the writing of the history of photography. To establish photography as modern art, Newhall believed it was necessary to create a direct link between the master-works of the earliest photographers and the photographic work of his modernist contemporaries in the USA. He argued that any work which demonstrated intervention by the photographer such as the use of soft-focus lenses was a deviation from the direct path of photographic progress and must therefore be eliminated from the history of photography. A consequence of this was that he rejected much British photography as being “unphotographic” and dangerously irrelevant. Newhall’s writings inspired many other historians and have helped to perpetuate the neglect of an important period of British photography. -

How this was complished is shown with three examples of careers of famous mathematicians. 1 Introduction This symposium is dedicated to the development of mathematics in the Austro- Hungarian monarchy in the time from 1850 to 1914. At the beginning of this period, in the middle of the 19th century the level of teaching and researching mathematics was very low – with a few exceptions – due to the influence of the jesuits in former centuries, and due to the reclusive period in the first half of the 19th century. But even in this time many efforts were taken to establish a higher education.
