PRESS RELEASE

PHILLIPS de PURY & COMPANY IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE A BROAD ARRAY OF IMPORTANT EARLY AND CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHS TO BE SOLD ON OCTOBER 17, 2007 AT 10 AM & 2 PM IN NEW YORK.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New York – September 12 – Phillips de Pury & Company is pleased to offer a superb selection of early and contemporary photographs from various collections. The auction will take place at the com - pany's Chelsea headquarters on October 17, 2007 with the pre-sale viewing opening on Wednesday, October 10th and extending through October 16th. The sale includes remarkable photographs from the most highly regarded photographers of the past one hundred years.

Among the many highlights is a rare, platinum print by F. Holland Day titled Pilate , 1906 (estimate $250,000- $350,000), a premier example of his most sought after and iconic works. Day played a significant role in the history of photography with his role in London in 1900 as one of the contributors to the American Pictorial photography exhibition entitled The New School of American Photography. Alongside photographers such as and Clarence H. White, Day's work represented the finest photography the United States had to offer. Day's early work is exceptionally rare and especially when signed and dated as is the case with this print.

Another remarkable image is French photographer and modernist Pierre Dubreuil's Chantecler from 1929 (estimate $80,000-$120,000), using his famed oil print process, Dubreuil demonstrates the influence of and on his pictorialist aesthetic. This unique work demonstrates his signature practice of exploring fragmented images from unexpected perspectives.

The sale will also include Robert Frank's Parade Hoboken New Jersey from 1955 (estimate $70,000- $90,000), a print of one of the iconic images from the photographer's immensly popular body of work entitled The Americans . In 1955, Frank was the first European photographer to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship; he immediately embarked on a road trip across the United States creating a pictorial social commentary by documenting contemporary American life which ultimately became his most memorable body of work. This image depicts the American flag draped across the front of a building and obscuring those behind it. This photograph, as well as five other Frank photographs, are being offered by Susan Penner, the widow of journalist Dennis Wheeler who interviewed Frank in 1976. A portion of the proceeds sold will benefit the Andrea Frank Foundation.

A highlight of the strong selection of contemporary photographers to be offered is a richly colored large scale photograph by Tina Barney titled Jill and Polly in the bathroom, from 1987 (estimate $30,000-$50,000). Barney is best known for her ongoing documentation of her family and friends, rendering universal narra - tives of family life. Using family members as subjects, such as her sister Jill and her daughter, Barney is able to convey a sense of ease and vulnerability in her photographs. The encounter between the two women in this photograph has an air of superficiality, and yet they also appear naturally at ease. It is an element that critics have called uncanny poise, making her images part candid, part tableau.

The sale will also offer an important photograph by Cindy Sherman, Comme des Garçon from 1994 (estimate $100,000-$150,000). One of the most desirable contemporary photographers, Sherman constantly reinvents herself to create and re-create multiple identities. This photograph is part of her most sought-after earlier works and was originally created as part of an advertising campaign for the fashion house Comme des Garçons and later printed in an edition of 6. Amongst the selection of contemporary works are photographs by Hiroshi Sugimoto, John Baldessari, Philip-Lorca DiCorcia, Elger Esser, Katy Grannan, Chris Jordan including works by Chinese photographers Weng Fen, the Gao Brothers, Ciu Xiuwen and Bai Yilou.

Earlier photographers represented include Berenice Abbott, Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus, Bill Brandt, Robert Frank, Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, portfolios by Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Danny Lyon, Bert Stern and .

The sale will take place at Phillips de Pury & Company, 450 West 15 Street NewYork City, 10011.The viewing will take place from October 10 until October 16 and open to the public from 10am -5pm.
