    17TH WESTLICHT PHOTO AUCTION Friday, March 9, 2018, 5 pm “Schönheit und Abgrund“ (beauty and the abyss) is the motto of this year’s celebrations of Modernism in Vienna. Gustav Klimt was one of the protagonists who shaped the intellectually vibrant, cosmopolitan city around 1900. He died a hundred years ago. In the photograph taken by Moriz Nähr in 1912, Gustav Klimt poses very much alive and not the least bit abyssal in his studio, petting his cat and glancing at the camera with vivid and warm-hearted eyes. It is one of his most famous portraits (estimate: 24,000-28,000 Euro) and is now on offer at the upcoming 17th WestLicht Photo Auction, only one of the highlights among more than 200 photographs and complementary rare treasures from the medium of the photobook. Klimt is accompanied by further Austrian masters of photography from the early 20th century like Rudolf Koppitz, Heinrich Kühn, Ferdinand Schmutzer, Madame d’Ora and Trude Fleischmann. The latter produced an enchanting portrait of the famous state opera dancer Tilly Losch, which is estimated at 2,500 to 3,000 Euro. Like Klimt, Czech photographer František Drtikol was a master of the female nude. Two works by him, “Untitled (Nude with shadow)”, 1926 (estimate: 9,000-10,000 Euro) and “Untitled (Backlit nude)”, c. 1926 (estimate: 7,000-9,000 Euro), are up for auction. Both come from the holdings of German photographer Grete Leistikow and display a cubist and art déco influence in their geometric elements, the expressively dynamic poses and the dramatic lighting.

    THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY The Research Library of the Mack Lee Gallery 2,633 titles in circa 3,140 volumes Lee Gallery Photography Research Library Comprising over 3,100 volumes of monographs, exhibition catalogues and periodicals, the Lee Gallery Photography Research Library provides an overview of the history of photography, with a focus on the nineteenth century, in particular on the first three decades after the invention photography. Strengths of the Lee Library include American, British, and French photography and photographers. The publications on French 19th- century material (numbering well over 100), include many uncommon specialized catalogues from French regional museums and galleries, on the major photographers of the time, such as Eugène Atget, Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Marville, Félix Nadar, Charles Nègre, and others. In addition, it is noteworthy that the library includes many small exhibition catalogues, which are often the only publication on specific photographers’ work, providing invaluable research material. The major developments and evolutions in the history of photography are covered, including numerous titles on the pioneers of photography and photographic processes such as daguerreotypes, calotypes, and the invention of negative-positive photography. Alpine landscapes and rural forms of life signified more than just a geogra- phic peculiarity in interwar Austria. The identification model of the Ständestaat’s anti-modernism could also be capitalized on as an idyll with tourist potential. Folklore and winter sports entered into a continuing bond here. It was no big step from the apotheosis of hard work and the admiration of traditional handicraft to the glorification of a patriarchal society of preindustrial character. Whether in the modernist Austrian pavilion at the World’s Exposition in Paris in 1937, in lavish photographic volumes, or in the up-to-date medium of the illustrated magazine: Heimat photography brought forth and deepened visual leitmotifs for this view of Austria far into the postwar reconstruction era.     One Hundred Years of Nakedness in German Performance Karl Toepfer Nothing in theatre elevates the identity of actor over character more com- pletely than nudity. Yet as a performance or spectacle, nudity remains a theat- rical phenomenon, a form of masking, insofar as it amplifies desire to discover, to expose something hidden within the body that one cannot discover, as ei- ther performer or spectator, through any mediated image of the body. Nudity onstage usually signifies a heightened measure of freedom and trust exchanged between performers and spectators. But here I examine a hierarchy of condi- tions under which nudity, as a manifestation of “real” presence, undermines not only distinctions between actor and character but distinctions between theatre and “reality.” More precisely, I examine aesthetic strategies by which nudity, as a form of exposure, becomes less and less containable within con- ventional theatre spaces and urges performers to expose the theatricality of spaces that otherwise seem imperturbably “real.” This essay discusses this un- containability of nude performance from an evolutionary or historical per- spective by analyzing nude performance aesthetic strategies in Germany over a 100-year period, from 1893 to 1992, with each strategy ascribing a different political or ideological significance to the power of the naked body to extend the realm of performance deeper into zones of reality considered too “authen- tic” to support (or tolerate) any confusion between nakedness and imperson- ation. The appeal of German Nacktkultur around 1900 rested upon the assumption that the act of displaying one’s nakedness and the act of observing the naked- ness of others could form a group or communal activity representing a pow- erful set of political values.
