It is not until the eighties that a small group of scholars begins to study and defend the importance of the surrealist poetic group or generación de 1930 in the Canary literature of their time. The sea, as a vital topic, takes form and strength in the poetic works of many writers during the modernist and postmodernist movements, and the first vanguards that emerged in the twenties. Among these authors, Pedro García Cabrera and Tomás Morales arose as the most relevant and prolific. Both poets had the opportunities and talent that allowed them to build on the artistic achievements of important peninsular writers at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Morales and García Cabrera constructed a powerful, personal vision of an insular identity. In their works, the sea, like a double-edged sword, transforms all at once into both a geographical limit and a borderless space. Here the Canario poet can submerge himself to establish a new history and tradition to fill the forgotten literary spaces of Canario insularity. The focus for this dissertation will be the present relationship between the work of these two Canary Island poets and the marine symbolism as a topic to define and enunciate insular identity. Through their works, Canario writers struggle to satisfy their desire to clarify that slippery concept of «canariedad» (or Canary Islands identity) as an insular conscience trapped in a double frame, both historic and geographic. vi No sé adónde, mar, has de llevarme mas me gusta ir contigo a la deriva, pues sé que existen islas, continentes, que para mí, aún vírgenes, reservas (Antonio Abdo 36) Introducción: La «canariedad» como síntoma en la búsqueda de identidad cultural insular (a través del tópico marino) La «atlanticidad», el «ser canario», o el sentimiento de «canariedad», como los críticos y estudiosos del tema han designado los intentos por definir la identidad de los habitantes de las Islas Canarias, son la base fundamental del asunto que trataremos en este trabajo. Aunque en el pasado las tentativas por concretar la idiosincrasia de los canarios han sido muy numerosas, no es hasta finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX que los escritores y artistas isleños se sienten comprometidos a puntualizar, desde su perspectiva particular, los valores y características de una conciencia insular colectiva. Aún así, y entrados en pleno siglo XXI, no se ha alcanzado todavía una respuesta o definición precisa que satisfaga la aspiración, por parte de los intelectuales canarios, de determinar lo que conlleva esa esquiva «canariedad» que tan exasperadamente se ha tratado de desvelar. La inmensa mayoría de los trabajos que tratan el estudio de la identidad canaria en las últimas décadas se concentran en el área de la psicología 1 política, como son: Raíz y estilo del alma canaria (1968) de Juan Rodríguez Doreste, Sobre la personalidad profunda del insular canario (1970) de Manuel Parejo Moreno, Psicología y vida del actual hombre canario de Pedro Hernández Hernández (1978), El canario un producto de su historia de Juan Morales González (1982), La independencia de Canarias para la liberación psicológica de nuestro pueblo de José Tomás Bethencourt Benítez (1988), Infancia y personalidad canaria. La psicología del niño canario de Antonio Rodríguez Hernández (1994), La construcción psicológica de la nación: El desarrollo de las ideas y sentimientos nacionales de Esteban Torres Lana (1994), La imagen que los canarios tienen de sí mismos y de las relaciones interinsulares. Actitudes y estereotipos insulares en la Comunidad Canaria de Armando Rodríguez Pérez y Mª Nieves Quiles del Castillo (2001), entre otros. A su vez, un grupo de historiadores y críticos han resaltado el aspecto historiográfico con un énfasis en el pasado aborigen prehispánico y el folclore cultural de las islas. Algunos de los estudios más notables de esta índole son: Estudios de etnografía y folklore canarios (1985) de José Pérez Vidal, Folclore Canario (1985) de Elfidio Alonso, «La construcción de la identidad cultural en regiones insulares: Islas Canarias, España» (1993) de José Alberto Galván Tudela, Los símbolos de la identidad canaria (1997) de Juan Manuel García Ramos, La identidad canaria en el arte (2001) de Ángeles Abad y El folclore musical de Canarias (2004) de José Carlos Delgado Díaz, entre otros. 2 El propósito de este trabajo es concretar que la identidad canaria moderna no se confina a las limitadas contribuciones de la sociedad aborigen prehispánica y sus consiguientes adaptaciones dentro del folclore de las islas sino que incluye además el influjo cultural, social, político y religioso de otras culturas posteriores. La cultura insular ha adoptado, directa o indirectamente, aportaciones de los tres continentes que conectan con el océano Atlántico (África, Europa y América), lo que ha convertido a las islas a través de la historia en lugar de arribada y escala así como de intercambio y migración. La identidad canaria, por consiguiente, así como los valores y cultura del Archipiélago, sufre un continuo proceso de creación y evolución en el que el mismo pueblo participa y que se ve modificado por una constante invasión cultural, es decir, la imposición de una cultura de forma unilateral. Existen además, dentro de la manifestación literaria canaria, una serie de temas que se repiten y cobran fuerza en la obra de un gran número de escritores y artistas canarios, así como en la tradición oral. Algunos de estos temas mantienen una estrecha correspondencia con la expresión de la identidad insular a través de la palabra. En este trabajo trataremos de establecer una aproximación a este estudio de la cultura enfocándonos en uno de los temas que más se repite en el arte y la literatura de las islas en general: el mar. Además examinaremos cómo el elemento marino ha sido utilizado en la creación literaria y artística para ilustrar el proceso evolutivo de la identidad canaria y su relación con la 3 comunidad insular actual. Para ello, aunque se recurrirá tanto a la literatura como a la música, las artes plásticas y el folclore, será en la poesía donde los artistas canarios buscarán, con mayor empeño, alcanzar la meta de puntualizar la correlación cultural entre la definición de la identidad canaria y la función determinante del mar. Se dice popularmente que en Canarias, si levantas una piedra aparece un poeta. A diferencia de la prosa narrativa que, según opinan los historiadores de la literatura insular, no empieza su andadura hasta el último cuarto de siglo XIX, la poesía isleña está presente en la historia de la literatura canaria desde poco después de la colonización a manos de la Corona española. En Canarias, el siglo XX representa para los críticos el apogeo literario ya que se aprecia, durante el modernismo y las vanguardias sobre todo, una madurez ante el lenguaje y ante la realidad que éste intenta proclamar (Artiles 179). La urgente búsqueda por una definición cultural en el siglo anterior dio como resultado una agitación intelectual en el XX y una lectura de la propia tradición isleña en constante resistencia con la europea.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT The object of this thesis is to explore Pardo Bazan's approach to travel as an aesthetically rewarding experience and also as a soul-searching exercise in which she voices her opinions and concerns with regard to the state of late nineteenth-century Spain and compares it to some other European countries. Indeed, in the Galician author's chronicles, which reveal her versatility and multifaceted interests as a travel writer, the journey itself takes second place to cultural, social, political, artistic, religious, and intellectual considerations. Another aspect of Pardo Bazan's travel works that this study will develop is her uneasy stance with regard to progress, technological advancement, and modern civilization, as illustrated, principally, in her foreign chronicles. For it is her apprehension and at times aversion to modern technology that place her in an anachronistic position in relation to some of the events and places covered in her travel accounts.

The works analyzed share a historical-geographical framework, which creates links between them. They also share a discourse of violence that has been part of Latin America since the colony to the present day.     The Guanche Ceremony is an ancient ritual celebrated yearly on 14 August at sunset. It begins indoors, as Our Lady of Candelaria leads a procession to the outside of her Basilica. Once there, a local group known as Colectivo Guanches de Candelaria re-enacts the discovery of her image, which took place before the conquest of Tenerife. The Ceremony’s script corresponds to the events narrated by the Dominican friar Alonso de Espinosa, in his work On the Origin and Miracles of the Holy Image of Our Lady of Candelaria, which Appeared in the Island of Tenerife with the Description of this Island, first published in Seville in 1594. The work consists of four books in which, in addition to narrating the events related to the apparition of the image of Our Lady of Candelaria, Alonso de Espinosa included a detailed description of the island of Tenerife and its inhabitants, the Guanches. Being one of the first printed volumes about the Canary Islands, it is considered as one of the major sources of the history of the Archipelago, a reference work for all later historians. En su relevante estudio Lo cubano en la poesía (1958), Cintio Vitier enfrentaba la crisis social que un año después desembocaría en la revolución, reclamando la “necesidad profunda de conocer nuestra alma, cuando parece que sus mejores esencias se prostituyen y evaporan” (398). Para el crítico, el resultado de esa indagación era lo cubano, que en principio no constituía “una esencia inmóvil y preestablecida [...] que podamos defi nir con independencia de sus manifestaciones sucesivas y generalmente problemáticas, para después decir: aquí está, aquí no está” (28). Sin embargo, en su propuesta cultural opuesta al neocolonialismo estadounidense, insistiría luego en “[l]a ausencia de historicidad del cubano” (106), resaltaría “las inspiraciones más puras y eternas de lo hispánico” (171), buscaría “nuestras esencias insulares” (397) y llegaría a identifi car “diez especies, categorías o esencias de lo cubano” (399).1 En este ensayo de construcción nacional Vitier no incluye, “por razones obvias” solo para él (351), un estudio de la poesía de su compañera en la vida y en la aventura de Orígenes –la prestigiosa revista y editorial que renovaría la literatura de Cuba entre 1944 y 1956–, Fina García Marruz (1923).2 1 Estas son, de acuerdo con Vitier: “Arcadismo, Ingravidez, Intrascendencia, Lejanía, Cariño, Despego, Frío, Vacío, Memoria, Ornamento” (399). (Wikimedia Commons) Before the European conquest, these islands were inhabited by different indigenous groups of people who came – or more probably were carried – in antiquity from the north of Africa in not entirely clear circumstances. (Wikimedia Commons) This kind of mummification in the Canary Islands is usually called mirlado and has been attested in three of the eight islands: Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Palma. Elements of the practice seem almost Egyptian in terms of objectives and methods, but is there a relationship? Information about the Canarian mummification comes from two main types of sources. The first is physical anthropology since the end of the 1980s through the 20th century. The second source is accounts by many authors since the 15th century, which provide especially valuable information. Here I focus on the latter, the interest shown by many individuals of different historic contexts and professional backgrounds: priests, astronomers, merchants, explorers, naturalists, doctors, and more. More than seventy authors have written about the mummies from the end of the 15th century to the first half of the 20th century.

Universidad Politécnica de Madrid Resumen La talla original de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, descubierta en el municipio del mismo nombre en la isla de Tenerife (islas Canarias) en la primera mitad del siglo XV tenía en torno a doscientas letras latinas inscritas en su indumentaria. Lamentablemente dicha talla desapareció en la gran tormenta ocurrida los días 7 y 8 de noviembre de 1826, por lo que no podemos acceder al cono- cimiento directo de dichas letras. Solamente el análisis de las representaciones artísticas de la misma y de las fuentes textuales o impresas que las recogieran nos permitirá acceder al conjunto literario de la talla primera, acercamiento este último que reco- gemos en este artículo. THE LETTERS OF THE ORIGINAL WOODEN CARVING OF OUR LADY OF CANDELARIA OF CANARY ISLANDS ACCORDING THE PRINTED DOCUMENTARY SOURCES Abstract The wooden carving of Our Lady of Candelaria, discovered in the municipality of the same name in the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands) during the first half of the fifteenth century, had nearly two hundred letters of the Latin alphabet inscribed on her garments. Unfortunately the original carving is not available for inspection. It disappeared after the storm that took place on the 7th and 8th of November, 1826, in Tenerife.

Verlagsanstalt, Graz, 1965) una completísima relación de las fuentes documentales para el estudio de las antiguas lenguas (o antigua lengua) del Archipiélago, que abarcan desde la breve relación de Nicolosso da Recco de los numerales de la isla de Gran Canaria, en el siglo XIV, o Le Canarien, de Bontier y Leverrier a principios del siglo XV, hasta compiladores más recientes, co­ mo algunos de los grandes eruditos de los siglos XVIII y XIX (Viera, Chil, Berthelot, etc.).
