The Guanche Ceremony is an ancient ritual celebrated yearly on 14 August at sunset. It begins indoors, as Our Lady of Candelaria leads a procession to the outside of her Basilica. Once there, a local group known as Colectivo Guanches de Candelaria re-enacts the discovery of her image, which took place before the conquest of Tenerife. The Ceremony’s script corresponds to the events narrated by the Dominican friar Alonso de Espinosa, in his work On the Origin and Miracles of the Holy Image of Our Lady of Candelaria, which Appeared in the Island of Tenerife with the Description of this Island, first published in Seville in 1594. The work consists of four books in which, in addition to narrating the events related to the apparition of the image of Our Lady of Candelaria, Alonso de Espinosa included a detailed description of the island of Tenerife and its inhabitants, the Guanches. Being one of the first printed volumes about the Canary Islands, it is considered as one of the major sources of the history of the Archipelago, a reference work for all later historians. Universidad Politécnica de Madrid Resumen La talla original de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, descubierta en el municipio del mismo nombre en la isla de Tenerife (islas Canarias) en la primera mitad del siglo XV tenía en torno a doscientas letras latinas inscritas en su indumentaria. Lamentablemente dicha talla desapareció en la gran tormenta ocurrida los días 7 y 8 de noviembre de 1826, por lo que no podemos acceder al cono- cimiento directo de dichas letras. Solamente el análisis de las representaciones artísticas de la misma y de las fuentes textuales o impresas que las recogieran nos permitirá acceder al conjunto literario de la talla primera, acercamiento este último que reco- gemos en este artículo. THE LETTERS OF THE ORIGINAL WOODEN CARVING OF OUR LADY OF CANDELARIA OF CANARY ISLANDS ACCORDING THE PRINTED DOCUMENTARY SOURCES Abstract The wooden carving of Our Lady of Candelaria, discovered in the municipality of the same name in the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands) during the first half of the fifteenth century, had nearly two hundred letters of the Latin alphabet inscribed on her garments. Unfortunately the original carving is not available for inspection. It disappeared after the storm that took place on the 7th and 8th of November, 1826, in Tenerife. -

Canaribeñidad: Interdependencias Identitarias Entre Las Islas Canarias Y El Caribe Hispano A Través De Sus Producciones Literarias Y Culturales by Xiomara Núñez-Rodríguez A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved April 2019 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Emil Volek, Chair Carmen Urioste-Azcorra Jesús Rosales ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2019 ABSTRACT The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago located on the African coast, 100 kilometers west of Morocco and the Sahara. Conquered by Spain at the end of the 15th century and now part of the Spanish State, the position of this archipelago as a tricontinental transit point has led to a colonial history of the islands that is common to that of the Caribbean, characterized by the assimilation of its indigenous populations, the sugar plantation and the Atlantic slave-trade, the emergence of a New World, the continuous migrations of the Canary Islanders to the Caribbean, the development of a pro-independence movement, and the touristification of the Canarian/Caribbean paradise, to name a few aspects. The identity of the Canary Islands, however, has remained obscured in the discussion of vague concepts such as tricontinentality or bridge-between-continents, when not considered just a slightly different Spanish region. From the Caribbean, local authors have questioned their own identities proposing concepts of creolization, relation, or a meta-archipelago. The common ideas explored by intellectuals in both archipelagoes include the concepts of coloniality, modernity, mythologization of the island, fragmentality, atlanticity, borderland, and ultra-periphery, among others. Thus, this dissertation connects the Canary Islands and the Caribbean by exploring the inter-connectedness of their identity-based discourses, and applies the postcolonial theories developed in the Caribbean to the Canary Islands. -

Our Lady of Candelaria The cult of Our Lady of Candelaria (Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria), popularly called La Morenita, celebrates an apparition of the Virgin Mary on the island of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands (Spain). The center of worship is located in the city of Candelaria in Tenerife. She is depicted as a Black Madonna. Its main temple and Royal Basilica Marian Shrine of Our Lady of Candelaria is considered the main church dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the Canary Islands. She is the patron saint of the Canary Islands. Her feast is celebrated on February 2 (Candlemas) and August 15, this patronal feast on Canary Islands. According to a legend recorded by Alonso de Espinosa in 1594, a statue of the Virgin Mary, bearing a child in one hand and a green candle in the other (hence "Candelaria"), was discovered on the beach by two goatherds in 1392. This occurred before the Castilian conquest of the island (the island was not fully conquered until 1496). One of the shepherds tried to throw a stone at the statue, but his arm became paralyzed; the other tried to stab the statue with a knife but ended up stabbing himself. The statue was taken by the local chief Acaymo, to the cueva de Chinguaro. Later, was recognized by Antón, a local who had been enslaved and converted to Christianity by the Castilians, as the Virgin Mary when he returned to Tenerife. The original image was a medieval gothic sculpture that many scientists have linked with the Knights of Templar. -
