Many of the Europeans who followed in his wake similarly claim to have "spoken" with the indigenous people they met. The questions that immediately occur to modern readers are all variations of "How?" How did the people of Guanahani speak to Columbus? How did the conquistadors of Puerto Rico learn the "secrets of the land" they were about to conquer? How did the Calusa of south Florida know to reject Spanish visitors before those visitors had even arrived? How did information flow in the absence of a shared language? In this dissertation, I answer those basic questions, and describe how the struggle to communicate and gather information shaped the social landscapes of European and indigenous people in the Spanish Atlantic through the long sixteenth century. I argue that efforts to communicate, whether in the Canary Islands or Kansas, fell into broad, nearly universal patterns, centered around material exchange, gesture, performance, and kidnapping. In telling this story, I also argue for a new kind of history of the early Americas, rooted in the story of a collective intellectual labor across the Spanish and indigenous Atlantic. By focusing on this common struggle, I make Curaçao, the Colorado River, and Tenochtitlan different stages for the performance of a common, connected drama. Rather than clashing civilizations, I tell the stories of individuals. I tell the history of the complex and contested Atlantic world that was, without undue deference to the colonial iv world that would be. I am as concerned with the "useless islands" of the Bahamas as the Zocalo of Mexico City, as devoted to the "doomed" Taino as the enduring Zapotecs of Oaxaca. The first chapter tells the story of contact in the Canary Islands, and demonstrates how indigenous islanders and visiting Europeans stumbled upon ways to communicate in the first contact frontier of the early modern Atlantic that would be repeated in the Americas. It also introduces the idea of the Long Contact, the decades of indigenous adaptation and reaction to repeated European visits that defined the experience of contact. The second chapter tells the stories of three Long Contacts in places that were never conquered by Spaniards, and how indigenous information networks responded to European presence. The following chapter examines the role of material exchange, hand signals, and body language as a surprisingly effective form of early contact communication. The next chapter examines the role of the indigenous slave trade in creating a corps of bilingual indigenous people who could be used as the first generation of translators.     THE DEVELOPMENT OF MARITIME HYDROGRAPHY AND METHODS OF NAVIGATION Lecture delivered by H enri BENCKER，on April 5th 1943. The “ Société des Conférences de iMonaco ” has kindly done me the honour to call upon me to treat before you a subject which is possibly a little dry although dealing with things of the sea, viz. the development of maritime hydrography and methods of navigation. I am all the more willing to fulfil this mission as we are indebted to the generosity of the Princely Government for the foundation and upkeep, since the year 1921, of a special Institute, situated in the Principaliiy and entrusted with the co-ordination of all questions relating to the world's hydrography. But, first of all, what is meant by “ hydrography ” ? It is customary to designate under this heading that branch of geographical science dealing with the regimen of current or stable waters which is peculiar to a given continental area. But from the stand point which concerns us, maritime hydrography is really the art of compiling charts and drawing up documents for the use of mariners with regard to the safety of their navigation and in view of ensuring the proper steering of their ships in all navigable parts, including oceans, seas and adjacent coastal zones. It includes the carrying out of necessary maritime surveys for the security of navigation viz. : coastal triangulation and shore topography measurements, the taking of soundings and sea depths, the description of coastlines, the study of tides and sea-currents. Its aim is to publish in an appropriate form for the use of navigators all data relating to the correct configuratiotf of navigable regions and all nautical information which may be of service to them.

The construction of a reservoir, though of limited storage capacity, south of Rosaires, would materially assist in augmenting the winter discharge of the Blue Nile; and a beginning might be made in the irrigation of the northern portion of the Ghezira, particularly to the north of Wad Medani. But the projects of constructing a barrage on the Blue Nile, for controlling the river Gash, and for obtaining additional supplies from the rivers Dinder, Rahad, Settit, and Atbara, have yet to be studied, and a series of levels run, before any definite schemes can be formulated.

(ACI) performed a cultural resource assessment survey (CRAS) of 79 acres of the Wiggins Prairie Mitigation Bank for Southern States Land & Timber, LLC in October 2016. Portions of the 492-acre parcel had been previously surveyed, and the current investigations focused on those areas where subsurface disturbance is anticipated. The purpose of the survey was to locate and identify any archaeological sites and historic resources within the project area of potential effects (APE) and to assess their significance in terms of eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The archaeological APE consists of those lands that will be subject to subsurface disturbance and have not previously been surveyed for cultural resources. The historical APE consists of the entire property. The survey was requested by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), who reviewed U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) file number SAJ-2016-00429-TMF (Parsons 2016).

Antonio de Ulloa Alejandro O'Reilly 1763 – 1770 1763 – 1770 •France’s secret treaty contained provisions to acquire the western Louisiana from Spain in the future. •Spain didn’t really have much interest since there wasn’t any precious metal compared to the rest of the South America and Louisiana was a financial burden to the French for so long. •British obtains all of Florida, including areas north of Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas and Bayou Manchac. •British built star-shaped sixgun fort, built in 1764, to guard the northern side of Bayou Manchac. •Bayou Manchac was an alternate route to Baton Rouge from the Gulf bypassing French controlled New Orleans. •After Britain acquired eastern Louisiana, by 1770, Spain became weary of the British encroaching upon it’s new territory west of the Mississippi. •Spain needed a way to populate it’s new territory and defend it. •Since Spain was allied with France, and because of the Treaty of Allegiance in 1778, Spain found itself allied with the Americans during their independence.

    Birth of a Colony North Carolina Guide for Educators Act II—The Road to Zacatecas Birth of a Colony Guide for Educators Birth of a Colony explores the history of North Carolina from the time of European exploration through the Tuscarora War. Presented in five acts, the video combines primary sources and expert commentary to bring this period of our history to life. Use this study guide to enhance students’ understanding of the ideas and information presented in the video. The guide is organized according to the video’s five acts. Included for each act are a synopsis, a vocabulary list, discussion questions, and lesson plans. Going over the vocabulary with students before watching the video will help them better understand the film’s content. Discussion questions will encourage students to think critically about what they have viewed. Lesson plans extend the subject matter, providing more information or opportunity for reflection. The lesson plans follow the new Standard Course of Study framework that takes effect with the 2012–2013 school year. With some adjustments, most of the questions and activities can be adapted for the viewing audience. Birth of a Colony was developed by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, in collaboration with UNC-TV and Horizon Productions. Sugar plantations, which relied heavily on the forced labor of the native people, flourished on the islands.

    1 Annotated Atlatl Bibliography John Whittaker Grinnell College version June 20, 2012 Introduction I began accumulating this bibliography around 1996, making notes for my own uses. Since I have access to some obscure articles, I thought it might be useful to put this information where others can get at it. Comments in brackets [ ] are my own comments, opinions, and critiques, and not everyone will agree with them. The thoroughness of the annotation varies depending on when I read the piece and what my interests were at the time. The many articles from atlatl newsletters describing contests and scores are not included. I try to find news media mentions of atlatls, but many have little useful info. There are a few peripheral items, relating to topics like the dating of the introduction of the bow, archery, primitive hunting, projectile points, and skeletal anatomy. Through the kindness of Lorenz Bruchert and Bill Tate, in 2008 I inherited the articles accumulated for Bruchert’s extensive atlatl bibliography (Bruchert 2000), and have been incorporating those I did not have in mine. The objective of this survey, which was conducted in November, 2006, was to identify cultural resources within or adjacent to the project area and assess their eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) according to the criteria set forth in 36 CFR Section 60.4. This assessment was designed and implemented to comply with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966 (as amended) as implemented by 36 CFR 800 (Protection of Historic Properties, effective January 2001); Section 102 of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, as amended (42 USC 4321 et seq.), as implemented by the regulations of the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) (40 CFR Parts 1500–1508); Section 4(f) of the Department of Transportation Act of 1966, as amended (49 USC 303); Chapter 267, Florida Statutes; and the minimum field methods, data analysis, and reporting standards embodied in the Florida Division of Historical Resources’ (FDHR) Cultural Resource Management Standards and Operational Manual (February 2003), and Chapter 1A-46 (Archaeological and Historical Report Standards and Guidelines), Florida Administrative Code.

Andrien ____________________ Adviser History Graduate Program ABSTRACT The Enlightenment, or the "Age of Reason," had a profound impact on eighteenth-century Europe, especially on its religion, producing both outright atheism and powerful movements of religious reform within the Church. The former—culminating in the French Revolution—has attracted many scholars; the latter has been relatively neglected. By looking at "enlightened" attempts to reform popular religious practices in Spain, my project examines the religious fervor of people whose story usually escapes historical attention. "Fiestas and Fervor" reveals the capacity of the Enlightenment to reform the Catholicism of ordinary Spaniards, examining how enlightened or Reform Catholicism affected popular piety in the diocese of Barcelona. This study focuses on the efforts of an exceptional figure of Reform Catholicism and Enlightenment Spain—Josep Climent i Avinent, Bishop of Barcelona from 1766- 1775. The program of “Enlightenment” as sponsored by the Spanish monarchy was one that did not question the Catholic faith and that championed economic progress and the advancement of the sciences, primarily benefiting the elite of Spanish society. In this context, Climent is noteworthy not only because his idea of “Catholic Enlightenment” opposed that sponsored by the Spanish monarchy but also because his was one that implicitly condemned the present hierarchy of the Catholic Church and explicitly ii advocated popular enlightenment and the creation of a more independent “public sphere” in Spain by means of increased literacy and education of the masses.
