Many of the Europeans who followed in his wake similarly claim to have "spoken" with the indigenous people they met. The questions that immediately occur to modern readers are all variations of "How?" How did the people of Guanahani speak to Columbus? How did the conquistadors of Puerto Rico learn the "secrets of the land" they were about to conquer? How did the Calusa of south Florida know to reject Spanish visitors before those visitors had even arrived? How did information flow in the absence of a shared language? In this dissertation, I answer those basic questions, and describe how the struggle to communicate and gather information shaped the social landscapes of European and indigenous people in the Spanish Atlantic through the long sixteenth century. I argue that efforts to communicate, whether in the Canary Islands or Kansas, fell into broad, nearly universal patterns, centered around material exchange, gesture, performance, and kidnapping. In telling this story, I also argue for a new kind of history of the early Americas, rooted in the story of a collective intellectual labor across the Spanish and indigenous Atlantic. By focusing on this common struggle, I make Curaçao, the Colorado River, and Tenochtitlan different stages for the performance of a common, connected drama. Rather than clashing civilizations, I tell the stories of individuals. I tell the history of the complex and contested Atlantic world that was, without undue deference to the colonial iv world that would be. I am as concerned with the "useless islands" of the Bahamas as the Zocalo of Mexico City, as devoted to the "doomed" Taino as the enduring Zapotecs of Oaxaca. The first chapter tells the story of contact in the Canary Islands, and demonstrates how indigenous islanders and visiting Europeans stumbled upon ways to communicate in the first contact frontier of the early modern Atlantic that would be repeated in the Americas. It also introduces the idea of the Long Contact, the decades of indigenous adaptation and reaction to repeated European visits that defined the experience of contact. The second chapter tells the stories of three Long Contacts in places that were never conquered by Spaniards, and how indigenous information networks responded to European presence. The following chapter examines the role of material exchange, hand signals, and body language as a surprisingly effective form of early contact communication. The next chapter examines the role of the indigenous slave trade in creating a corps of bilingual indigenous people who could be used as the first generation of translators. The “ Société des Conférences de iMonaco ” has kindly done me the honour to call upon me to treat before you a subject which is possibly a little dry although dealing with things of the sea, viz. the development of maritime hydrography and methods of navigation. I am all the more willing to fulfil this mission as we are indebted to the generosity of the Princely Government for the foundation and upkeep, since the year 1921, of a special Institute, situated in the Principaliiy and entrusted with the co-ordination of all questions relating to the world's hydrography. But, first of all, what is meant by “ hydrography ” ? It is customary to designate under this heading that branch of geographical science dealing with the regimen of current or stable waters which is peculiar to a given continental area. But from the stand point which concerns us, maritime hydrography is really the art of compiling charts and drawing up documents for the use of mariners with regard to the safety of their navigation and in view of ensuring the proper steering of their ships in all navigable parts, including oceans, seas and adjacent coastal zones. It includes the carrying out of necessary maritime surveys for the security of navigation viz. : coastal triangulation and shore topography measurements, the taking of soundings and sea depths, the description of coastlines, the study of tides and sea-currents. Its aim is to publish in an appropriate form for the use of navigators all data relating to the correct configuratiotf of navigable regions and all nautical information which may be of service to them.

The archaeological APE consists of those lands that will be subject to subsurface disturbance and have not previously been surveyed for cultural resources. Since I have access to some obscure articles, I thought it might be useful to put this information where others can get at it. Comments in brackets [ ] are my own comments, opinions, and critiques, and not everyone will agree with them. The thoroughness of the annotation varies depending on when I read the piece and what my interests were at the time. The many articles from atlatl newsletters describing contests and scores are not included. I try to find news media mentions of atlatls, but many have little useful info. Andrien ____________________ Adviser History Graduate Program ABSTRACT The Enlightenment, or the "Age of Reason," had a profound impact on eighteenth-century Europe, especially on its religion, producing both outright atheism and powerful movements of religious reform within the Church. The former—culminating in the French Revolution—has attracted many scholars; the latter has been relatively neglected. By looking at "enlightened" attempts to reform popular religious practices in Spain, my project examines the religious fervor of people whose story usually escapes historical attention. "Fiestas and Fervor" reveals the capacity of the Enlightenment to reform the Catholicism of ordinary Spaniards, examining how enlightened or Reform Catholicism affected popular piety in the diocese of Barcelona. This study focuses on the efforts of an exceptional figure of Reform Catholicism and Enlightenment Spain—Josep Climent i Avinent, Bishop of Barcelona from 1766- 1775. The program of “Enlightenment” as sponsored by the Spanish monarchy was one that did not question the Catholic faith and that championed economic progress and the advancement of the sciences, primarily benefiting the elite of Spanish society. In this context, Climent is noteworthy not only because his idea of “Catholic Enlightenment” opposed that sponsored by the Spanish monarchy but also because his was one that implicitly condemned the present hierarchy of the Catholic Church and explicitly ii advocated popular enlightenment and the creation of a more independent “public sphere” in Spain by means of increased literacy and education of the masses.
