La historia va unida a los nombres de Luis Mario y Diego de Mazariegos en la reduc ción de la alta meseta; Pedro de Alvarado en el litoral del Pacífico, y el propio Hernán Cortés en la zona selvática de la cuenca del Usuma cinta. En efecto, fué en 1523 cuando Luis Mario recibió soldados e ins trucciones de Cortés para pacificar la región de Chiapas. Casi todo el te rritorio mexicano había sido hollado por aquel10s años, conquistándose a totonacas, mbttecas, zapatecas, tarascos, colimenses, por capitanes en tre los que se contaban Pedro de Alvarado, Gonzalo de Sandoval, Fran cisco de Orozco, Cristóbal de 01id, etc. Vino a tocarle a l .. u1s Marin, vie- 27 jo conquistador que figuró entre los capitanes del sitio de Mé'óco, 1 re cibir órdenes de Hernán Cortés para salir de la villa de Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, y pacificar a los indios no reducidos de Chiapas. Bernal Díaz describe a Luis MarÍn como "bueno e no era malicioso" y refiere los he chos de la primera entrada de españoles a Chiapas como testigo presen cial; Z Marin entró por Iztapa de donde avanzó al poblado indígena de Chiapa, cabeza de los señoríos indígenas de aquella región, pues tenían sometidos a zaques, tzendales y quelenes, no estando ellas sujetos a los aztecas, cuya más cercana guarnición era la de Zinacantán. 3 Por la cua resma de 1523, afirma Bernal Díaz, llegaron los españoles a Chiapa, cuyas defensas naturales las constituían encrespados riscos y el río Grijalva, de fensas que, dice Remesal, los habían preservado de las conquistas mexica nas. -

Birth of a Colony North Carolina Guide for Educators Act II—The Road to Zacatecas Birth of a Colony Guide for Educators Birth of a Colony explores the history of North Carolina from the time of European exploration through the Tuscarora War. Presented in five acts, the video combines primary sources and expert commentary to bring this period of our history to life. Use this study guide to enhance students’ understanding of the ideas and information presented in the video. The guide is organized according to the video’s five acts. Included for each act are a synopsis, a vocabulary list, discussion questions, and lesson plans. Going over the vocabulary with students before watching the video will help them better understand the film’s content. Discussion questions will encourage students to think critically about what they have viewed. Lesson plans extend the subject matter, providing more information or opportunity for reflection. The lesson plans follow the new Standard Course of Study framework that takes effect with the 2012–2013 school year. With some adjustments, most of the questions and activities can be adapted for the viewing audience. Birth of a Colony was developed by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, in collaboration with UNC-TV and Horizon Productions. Introducció El restabliment a Girona d’estudis universitaris i la constitució formal de la Universitat de Girona a fi nals del segle XX ha estat un fet transcendent en la vida de la ciutat. Fa poc, a principis del segle XXI, s’ha produït un altre fet que tindrà conseqüències semblants: la reunió i la gestió en un mateix edifi ci dels arxius i de les biblioteques eclesiàstiques gironines: Arxiu de la Catedral, Arxiu Diocesà, Arxiu de Sant Feliu, Arxius Parroquials, Biblioteca de la Catedral, Biblioteca de Sant Feliu, Biblioteca Diocesana del Seminari de Girona. La nostra afi rmació, només aparentment parcial, no és el fruit de cap encegament. És la conseqüència d’haver pogut constatar que la documentació eclesiàstica gironina és el fi l que guia, acompanya i molt sovint aclareix la tra- jectòria històrica de les comarques que formen un bisbat més que mil·lenari. Durant segles aquesta documentació ha estat conservada en establiments independents i descoordinats. La decisió d’aplegar-la sota un mateix sostre i una mateixa direcció és un fet que marca diverses fi tes. Finalment, l’Església gironina adopta una política sobre el seu patrimoni documental, un criteri de gestió, una projecció cap a la societat. Els quatre arxius eclesiàstics gironins són potents —cal dir-ho?— i la biblioteca diocesana resultant de la juxtaposició de les tres anteriorment esmentades és rica de fons antics; l’accés organitzat a tals fons posa en mans dels investigadors i dels estudiants una massa documental de primer orde, al costat de l’Arxiu Municipal, de l’Arxiu Històric de Girona i de la Biblioteca Carles Rahola de Girona. -

A Staged Encounter: French Meeting Timucua in Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues FRANK LESTRINGANT The rituals and ceremonials were not the decorative covering of the alliances; they were its sinews. —Richard White, The Middle Ground (1991) In 1591, a quarter of a century after the destruction of the French settlements in Florida by the Spanish adelantado Menéndez de Avilés in autumn of 1565, there appeared in Frankfurt the second volume of Théodore de Bry’s Great Voyages, the Brevis Narratio of Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues.1 It included an extraordinary series of forty-two copper-plates depicting the Timucua Native Americans2 engaged in a variety of everyday activities, both in peacetime and war. The space represented in these engravings is neither neutral nor objective. It is, rather, a “theater,” in the sense the word often held in the sixteenth century—that is, a kind of visualization device, but one with a bias. This compendium of texts and engravings places the iconography face-to-face with the texts it accompanies, and with which it maintains a complex relationship that cannot simply be reduced to an illustrative role. By 1591, however, this representation had already become anachronistic. Reviving colonial activities was no longer possible, since the territories were now occupied by Spain, and the French monarchy had in the meantime been torn apart by the Wars of Religion. If, indeed, such a revival were conceivable within the hierarchy of Europe, it could only be accomplished under the auspices of the Protestant powers, with England and Holland foremost among them. To be sure, De Bry’s editorial endeavor cannot be reduced to a geopolitical stratagem, though it certainly is that on some level.
