Interdependencias Identitarias Entre Las Islas Canarias Y El Caribe Hispano Canaribeñidad: Interdependencias Identitarias Entre Las Islas Canarias Y El Caribe Hispano A Través De Sus Producciones Literarias Y Culturales by Xiomara Núñez-Rodríguez A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved April 2019 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Emil Volek, Chair Carmen Urioste-Azcorra Jesús Rosales ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2019 ABSTRACT The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago located on the African coast, 100 kilometers west of Morocco and the Sahara. Conquered by Spain at the end of the 15th century and now part of the Spanish State, the position of this archipelago as a tricontinental transit point has led to a colonial history of the islands that is common to that of the Caribbean, characterized by the assimilation of its indigenous populations, the sugar plantation and the Atlantic slave-trade, the emergence of a New World, the continuous migrations of the Canary Islanders to the Caribbean, the development of a pro-independence movement, and the touristification of the Canarian/Caribbean paradise, to name a few aspects. The identity of the Canary Islands, however, has remained obscured in the discussion of vague concepts such as tricontinentality or bridge-between-continents, when not considered just a slightly different Spanish region. From the Caribbean, local authors have questioned their own identities proposing concepts of creolization, relation, or a meta-archipelago. The common ideas explored by intellectuals in both archipelagoes include the concepts of coloniality, modernity, mythologization of the island, fragmentality, atlanticity, borderland, and ultra-periphery, among others. Thus, this dissertation connects the Canary Islands and the Caribbean by exploring the inter-connectedness of their identity-based discourses, and applies the postcolonial theories developed in the Caribbean to the Canary Islands. By analyzing the works of Fernando Ortiz, Antonio S. Pedreira, Édouard Glissant, Jean Bernabé, Patrick Chamoiseau, Raphael Confiant, Antonio Benítez-Rojo, José Luis González, Juan Flores, Gustavo Pérez-Firmat, Walter Mignolo, Enrique Dussel, Gloria Anzaldúa, i and Juan Manuel García-Ramos, among others, this dissertation proposes the term Canaribeñidad to define the bilateral, common development of national identities in the Canary Islands and the Caribbean, highlighting the Canarian contributions to the Caribbean identity (the foundation of the Cuban literature, the guajiro/jíbaro, brujería…) and vice versa (independence and national discourses, diasporic experience, music, tobacco, the sensitivity of fraternity to the Caribbean…). The corpus analyzed in this dissertation includes transatlantic literary works from the first chronicles of the Conquest to examples of theater, novels, essays, journalistic articles and poetry from the 16th century to the 20th century. ii RESUMEN Las Islas Canarias son un archipiélago de la costa africana situado a cien kilómetros de la costa de Marruecos y del Sáhara Occidental. Estas islas fueron conquistadas a finales del siglo XV y son actualmente parte del Estado español, y su posición como punto de paso tricontinental ha facilitado una historia colonial que es paralela a la del Caribe y que está caracterizada por la asimilación de sus poblaciones indígenas, las plantaciones de caña de azúcar y el comercio esclavista atlántico, la emergencia de un Nuevo Mundo, las migraciones constantes desde las Islas Canarias hacia el Caribe, el desarrollo de movimientos independentistas y la turistificación del paraíso caribeño/canario, entre otros aspectos. La identidad de las Islas Canarias, si embargo, ha permanecido en una posición ambigua en la discusión de conceptos de tricontinentalidad o puente entre continentes, cuando estas islas no son simplemente consideradas como una región más de España con ligeras diferencias. Desde el Caribe, varios autores regionales han cuestionado sus propias identidades proponiendo los conceptos de creolización, relación o meta-archipiélago. Las ideas comunes exploradas por intelectuales de ambos archipiélagos incluyen los conceptos de colonialidad, modernidad, mitologización de la isla, fragmentación, atlanticidad, frontera y ultraperiferia, entre otros. De esta manera, esta tesis doctoral conecta las Islas Canarias y el Caribe a través de la exploración de sus discursos identitarios, y aplica a Canarias las teorías poscoloniales desarrolladas en el Caribe. Partiendo del análisis de diversos trabajos de Fernando Ortiz, Antonio S. Pedreira, Édouard Glissant, Jean Bernabé, Patrick Chamoiseau, Raphael Confiant, Antonio Benítez Rojo, José Luis González, Juan iii Flores, Gustavo Pérez-Firmat, Walter Mignolo, Enrique Dussel, Gloria Anzaldúa y Juan Manuel García Ramos, entre otros, esta tesis propone el término canaribeñidad para definir el desarrollo bilateral y común de las identidades nacionales en las Islas Canarias y el Caribe, destacando la contribución canaria a la identidad caribeña (la fundación de la literatura cubana, el guajiro/jíbaro, la brujería…) y viceversa (discursos independentistas y nacionalistas, la experiencia diaspórica, la música, el tabaco, el sentido de fraternidad con el Caribe…). El corpus analizado en esta disertación incluye obras literarias transatlánticas, desde las primeras crónicas hasta ejemplos de teatro, novelas, ensayos, artículos periodísticos y poesía de los siglos XVI-XX. iv A mis padres, que han sido partícipes del desarrollo de esta tesis doctoral desde el comienzo, y cuyo esfuerzo y apoyo incondicionales desde el primer momento de mi vida han permitido que esté donde estoy hoy. ROOSEVELT AND CHRISTINA LUKE 1Department of Archaeology and History of Art, Koç University, I˙stanbul, Turkey 2Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations, Koç University, I˙stanbul, Turkey 3Department of Archaeology, Boston University, USA This article presents previously unknown archaeological evidence of a mid-second-millennium BC kingdom located in central western Anatolia. Discovered during the work of the Central Lydia Archaeological Survey in the Marmara Lake basin of the Gediz Valley in western Turkey, the material evidence appears to correlate well with text-based reconstructions of Late Bronze Age historical geog- raphy drawn from Hittite archives. One site in particular—Kaymakçı—stands out as a regional capital and the results of the systematic archaeological survey allow for an understanding of local settlement patterns, moving beyond traditional correlations between historical geography and capital sites alone. Comparison with contemporary sites in central western Anatolia, furthermore, identifies material com- monalities in site forms that may indicate a regional architectural tradition if not just influence from Hittite hegemony.     The Guanche Ceremony is an ancient ritual celebrated yearly on 14 August at sunset. It begins indoors, as Our Lady of Candelaria leads a procession to the outside of her Basilica. Once there, a local group known as Colectivo Guanches de Candelaria re-enacts the discovery of her image, which took place before the conquest of Tenerife. The Ceremony’s script corresponds to the events narrated by the Dominican friar Alonso de Espinosa, in his work On the Origin and Miracles of the Holy Image of Our Lady of Candelaria, which Appeared in the Island of Tenerife with the Description of this Island, first published in Seville in 1594. The work consists of four books in which, in addition to narrating the events related to the apparition of the image of Our Lady of Candelaria, Alonso de Espinosa included a detailed description of the island of Tenerife and its inhabitants, the Guanches. Being one of the first printed volumes about the Canary Islands, it is considered as one of the major sources of the history of the Archipelago, a reference work for all later historians. (Wikimedia Commons) Before the European conquest, these islands were inhabited by different indigenous groups of people who came – or more probably were carried – in antiquity from the north of Africa in not entirely clear circumstances. (Wikimedia Commons) This kind of mummification in the Canary Islands is usually called mirlado and has been attested in three of the eight islands: Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Palma. Elements of the practice seem almost Egyptian in terms of objectives and methods, but is there a relationship? Information about the Canarian mummification comes from two main types of sources. The first is physical anthropology since the end of the 1980s through the 20th century. The second source is accounts by many authors since the 15th century, which provide especially valuable information. Here I focus on the latter, the interest shown by many individuals of different historic contexts and professional backgrounds: priests, astronomers, merchants, explorers, naturalists, doctors, and more. More than seventy authors have written about the mummies from the end of the 15th century to the first half of the 20th century.

Considering the primary importance of these historical sources, it is astonishing how little attention has been paid to the way they have been edited by Meritt, McGregor and Wade-Gery in The Athenian Tnbute Lists (ATL) I-IV from 1939-1953 and by Meritt in Inscnptiones Graecae (IG I3) 254-291 from 1981 during the last several decades.1 This negligence on the part of contemporary scholars, both ancient historians and, more surprisingly, also Greek epigraphists, stands in sharp contrast to the central place the lists take in academic articles, monographs and history books dealing with Greek history of the fifth century BC.

    Introduction Sometime between 311 and 306 bce, Antigonos the One-Eyed compelled the polis of Skepsis to join in the foundation of a new coastal metropolis, Antigoneia Troas, along with several other major cities of the region.1 Situated in the rich agricultural basin of the Skamandros River, at the foot of Mount Ida in the interior of the cen- tral Troad, Skepsis was roughly sixty kilometers (thirty-seven miles) from the urban center of Antigoneia along modern routes. Th e city, which had identifi ed as Ionian since its incorporation of settlers fl eeing the destruction of Miletos in 494, unwillingly joined the union alongside its hated neighbor across the Skamandros, the Aiolian polis Kebren.2 Antigonos’s synoikism was designed to consolidate his hold on the region in the wake of the peace of 311, as the rival heirs of Alexander’s empire took advantage of the cessation in hostilities to stabilize their emerging territorial kingdoms and prepare for the next round of confl ict. Th e terms of this famous peace are most fully known from a fragmentary copy of a letter from Antigonos to Skepsis, in which he announces the settlement and professes to assent to the less palatable conditions of the agreement because he “was ambi- tious” (philotimesthai, l. 21) to secure the freedom and autonomy of the Greeks in his lifetime.3 Th e vaguely worded settlement was formalized through oaths requir- ing the Greek cities under Antigonos’s control to abide by its terms.
