Sociology Department Information:

At Eastbury, we have a very committed and well-resourced Sociology department, which has expanded significantly over the last year. Sociology is a popular option at key stage 4 and attracts large numbers in the sixth form. The department consists of inspiring and supportive colleagues who strive for excellence through engaging and thought provoking lessons. At both GCSE and A level, our teachers prioritise supporting pupils to make the best possible progress using a variety of teaching and learning strategies.

To highlight the popularity of sociology at Eastbury, in September 2017, we had our first GCSE cohort with an intake of 110 students. We have continued to recruit similar numbers in later years.

Our GCSE course follows the AQA specification, which requires students to study Family, Education, Theory and Methods, Crime and Social Stratification. Furthermore, the course allows students to relate their knowledge to contemporary society, which is often very relevant to their own lives. Our GCSE students have the opportunity to visit the Old Bailey and watch a live trial whereby they are able to utilise their sociological knowledge in a real life situation.

With outstanding A level results, this is always a very popular subject in the Sixth Form. Consistently having an ALPS Grade 2 for the last three years.

Our A level numbers have increased even further over the past few years due to the continued popularity of the course at GCSE. The AQA specification is followed at both key stage 4 and 5, which helps to bridge the gap from GCSE to A level. Students will study Education and Family in the first year and Beliefs in Society and Crime in the second year. The success of this department is evident through many students choosing to continue the subject at university.

At both GCSE and A level, there is a strong focus on examination preparation that is embedded into all of the lessons. Students are provided with exam skills that replicate the subject’s assessment objectives encouraging progression for all students.

The sociology department is very cohesive, with outstanding teachers, excellent schemes of work and fully established assessment procedures. There is a strong sense of teamwork that is passed on to the students and contributes to their views and experiences whilst studying sociology.

The Sociology department consists of five dedicated members of staff.
