Memoria 2015 MEMORIA de Actividades 2015 Qué es la Sociedad Geográfica Española Espíritus inquietos y románticos. Aventureros románticos, espíritus inquietos, observadores curiosos… el viejo espíritu de los Livingstone, Burton o de nuestro Manuel Iradier, sigue aún vivo y por increíble que parezca, aún hay fronteras y retos para la exploración. La Sociedad Geográfica Es- pañola es heredera de esta larga tradición exploradora y ha conseguido unir a gentes provenientes de todos los ámbitos en el interés común de recuperar la memoria de los grandes exploradores y descubridores españoles y de dar a conocer al mundo las aportaciones actuales de geógrafos, intelectuales y viajeros españoles. Ya no quedan en los mapas grandes espacios en blanco por rellenar y los satélites nos permiten conocer los más mínimos detalles de cualquier rincón del planeta, pero la ciencia sigue teniendo ante sí horizontes desconocidos y el ser humano, que es un explorador nato desde los tiempos prehistóricos, se siente irrefrenable- mente atraído por descubrir lo que el universo parece ocultarle. Los nuevos horizontes de la exploración científica en el siglo XXI son lugares cuyos secretos aún no han sido desvelados como los fondos marinos y las re- giones polares e, indudablemente, el espacio y en particular Marte, convertido hoy en el equivalente de lo que en su día fueron América o Australia. El conoci- miento de estas tres nuevas fronteras nos revelará mucho más sobre el mundo Junta Directiva en el que vivimos. El número 51: fue un especial dedicado al Islam. En él participaron Bernabé López García, José Luis Mullor Garrido, David Nievas Bullejos, Lola Escudero, Jordi Esteva, Inés Eléxpuru, Patricio de Blas Zabaleta, Emma Lira, Ana I. Planet y Salvatore Madonia, José Antonio Rodríguez Esteban, Cherif Abderrahman Jah, Pedro Páramo, Javier Ordóñez, Lucía Gil y Patricia Almárcegui. El número 52: fue un especial dedicado a los Pirineos. En él participaron Pedro Nicolás, Eduardo Martínez de Pisón, Lola Escudero, Alberto Martínez Embid, Raúl Martín Moreno, Luz Gabás, Marga Martínez, Ana Puértolas, Eduardo Viñuales Cobos, Emma Lira, Antonio Merino Mora, Ricardo Compairé, Ana Puértolas y Juan Carlos Rey. Visitas culturales Visita, exclusiva La SGE organizó el 15 de enero una visita, exclusiva para socios, para ver las instalaciones de la Agencia Estatal de para socios, a la Meteorología (AEMET), Miembro de Honor SGE 2013. En la visita, los socios pudieron ver el Centro Nacional de Agencia Estatal Predicción, el Centro de Proceso de Datos, con el funcionamiento del nuevo supercomputador, así como el Centro De Meteorología Radiométrico Nacional, con visita al aparataje de la azotea. (Aemet). Visita exclusiva El sábado 3 de octubre, la SGE realizó una visita exclusiva para socios al Museo Arqueológico Nacional (MAN) guiada para socios por Mª Carmen Pérez Díe, Conservadora Jefe del Departamento de Antigüedades Egipcias y del Oriente Próximo del al Museo MAN y, Premio Nacional SGE 2009. Arqueológico Nacional Memoria de actividades 2015 5 Viajes culturales Del 9 al 16 de mayo la SGE, en Sicilia: puente colaboración con Catai Tours, or- entre Oriente ganizó un viaje a la isla de Sicilia y Occidente que, desde tiempos prehistóricos, se ha revelado como tierra de convergencia y encuentro para todos los pueblos de navegantes mediterráneos. Y, además, por su posición geográfica, también ha jugado un rol de primer orden como puente entre un África y una Europa que, en aquellos re- motos tiempos, consideraban al Mediterráneo como un mar que las reunía y no que las separaba. Acompañó el viaje Carles Buenacasa, Doctor en Historia Antigua, especialista en Mundo Clásico y Tardoantiguo y Profesor de la Universidad de Barcelona. Del 2 al 12 de octubre los participantes del viaje a Méxi- VIAJE AL MÉXICO co, , organizado por Catai Tours para la SGE, tuvieron la COLONIAL: un oportunidad de comprobar, recorriendo las calles de Mé- bello encuentro xico D.F., de Guanajuato, de Querétaro o de Guadalajara, con la vieja cómo las raíces españolas dieron espléndidos frutos en España aquella tierra americana. Vieron en esas ciudades palacios blasonados y templos como los de Castilla, de los siglos XVI, XVII y XVIII; pasearon por sus calles de casas multico- lores; oyeron hablar a sus habitantes un español cantarín de sorprendente pureza, y encontraron en los menús de sus restaurantes algún recuerdo de nuestras ollas tradi- cionales, eso sí, aderezadas con los colores vibrantes y los sabores picantes de la cocina criolla. Fue un bello reencuentro con la Nueva España. Pedro Páramo, miembro fundador de la SGE, acompañó el viaje desde España e impartió programa de conferen- cias sobre la herencia colonial española en México. 6 Sociedad Geográfica Española Sri Lanka, Del 5 al 16 de diciembre, la SGE la antigua Ceilán organizó, en colaboración con Ocoa Travel, un viaje a la antigua Ceilán. Durante siglos, sedujo a los viajeros, que regresaban a sus hogares con encantadoras imágenes de una lán- guida isla tropical, de una espiritua- lidad y serenidad tan profundas que entró en el imaginario occidental como el Tahití del este. Acompañó el viaje Manuel Forcano i Aparicio, Doctor en Filología Semítica por la Universitat de Barcelona. EXCURSIONES Salidas de La SGE continúa con el calendario de salidas mensuales de senderismo, geografía y naturaleza guiadas por geógrafos campo con de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid como Raúl Martín, Pilar Lacasta, Daniel Ferrer y Fernando Santa Cecilia geógrafos y por geógrafos de la Universidad de Málaga como Matías Mérida, Belén Zayas, Jesús Vías y Alfonso Sánchez. Los tramos realizados cubrieron los recorridos de “Alto valle del Lozoya” en enero, “Primavera en los jardines de Aran- juez” en marzo, “El nacimiento del río Manzanares: del puerto de Navacerrada a Manzanares el Real” en junio. En septiembre, “Travesía de Cuerda Larga: media maratón de los dosmiles del Guadarrama”. En noviembre, “Málaga y el mar” y en noviembre “De la Fonda Real a Canto Cochino”. Memoria de actividades 2015 7 SENDERISMO Y VISITAS CULTURALES Dentro del programa de las “Estaciones de la Fin de semana SGE” se organizó una visita de fin de semana en Córdoba a Córdoba que tuvo lugar los días 21 y 22 de febrero. El viaje incluyó la visita a la capital del histórico califato omeya. Se reconocieron los conjuntos monumentales de Medina Azahara, la Gran Mezquita de Córdoba y el casco histórico de esta ciudad situada a orillas del Guadalquivir. Junto a la oferta cultural, como habitualmente en estos programas, se sumó la actividad senderista en la jornada del domingo: una ruta de dificultad baja por la Sierra de Córdoba. Como complemento a esta actividad senderista se ofreció, la visita al Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos y Caballerizas Reales de Felipe II. Acompañó y guio el grupo, Fernando Santa Cecilia, doctor en geografía y miembro de la SGE.

    March 2020 Pole to Pole Circumnavigation Update “I’ve learned that at some point you have to either accept the risks you can’t control or simply walk away. I choose to keep flying. The opportunity to expand the boundaries of general aviation, to inspire present and future generations to live their impossibly big dreams, and to be able to fly in the name of world peace, makes all the risks worthwhile.” Robert DeLaurentis The world has changed dramatically since our last update in January. The coronavirus pandemic has slowed down the pace of living for many (all “nonessential” business owners and employees) and rapidly increased the pace of living for others (healthcare workers, ventilator manufacturers, vaccine scientists). The Citizen of the World Polar Circumnavigation is still moving forward. Assuming there is a lightening up of quarantine restrictions within the next 30 days, I plan on flying over the North Pole in May when the weather warms up. And if that doesn’t happen, we’ll figure out the next step when we get there. As I put my own “Zen Moments,” into practice, I’m learning when we do the emotional and spiritual work of holding inner peace, and trust the Universe to show us the next step, Life works with us rather than us against Life and the path eventually becomes clear. At its tenth meeting, the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity requested the Executive Secretary to work with Parties and other Governments as well as competent organizations and regional initiatives, such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), regional seas conventions and action plans, and, where appropriate, regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) to organize, including the setting of terms of reference, a series of regional workshops, with a primary objective to facilitate the description of ecologically or biologically significant marine areas (EBSAs) through the application of the scientific criteria given in decision IX/20, annex I, as well as other relevant compatible and complementary nationally and intergovernmentally agreed scientific criteria, as well as the scientific guidance on the identification of marine areas beyond national jurisdiction, which meet the scientific criteria in annex I to decision IX/20 (see decision X/29, para. 36). 2. Subsequently, at its eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth meetings, the Conference of the Parties reviewed the outcomes of the regional workshops conducted and requested the Executive Secretary to include the summary reports prepared by the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice, as contained in the annexes to decisions XI/17, XII/22, XIII/12 and 14/9, in the repository of ecologically or biologically significant marine areas, and to transmit the summary reports to the United Nations General Assembly and its relevant processes, as well as to Parties, other Governments and relevant international organizations, in line with the purpose and procedures set out in decisions X/29, XI/17 and XII/22.

Clark A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland September, 2016 © 2016 Joseph Michael Hopper Clark All Rights Reserved Abstract of the Dissertation This dissertation examines the relationship between the Mexican port city of Veracruz and Caribbean in the seventeenth century. Drawing evidence from archival research conducted primarily in Mexico and Spain, I argue that Veracruz was part of a coherent urban system in the early modern Caribbean. Its first chapter uses early chronicles and conquest narratives, archived correspondence of Veracruz’s town council (cabildo), hospital records, and traveler accounts to examine Veracruz’s environmental struggles from the city’s foundation in 1519 until the end of the seventeenth century. Chapter Two builds on a database of import and export tax duties assessed in the ports of Veracruz and Havana to argue that Veracruz was part of a discrete regional trading network that followed patterns that were independent of the transatlantic silver fleet. The third chapter reassesses Veracruz’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, showing that the African captives who arrived in the city were a larger and more diverse group than previous studies have acknowledged. A particular contribution is the use of previously unused Mexican archival sources for the transatlantic slave trade. Chapter Four evaluates the ethnic and religious acculturation of African and free-black communities in Veracruz using the lens of a religious borderland. The final chapter examines how Veracruz’s role in colonial defenses changed over the course of the seventeenth century.
