TITLE COVID-19 Pandemic Situation Report SERIAL NUMBER 17 EPID-WEEK 20 DATE 16 May 2020

HIGHLIGHTS:  No new confirmed case(s) reported today  Fifty-one (51) new contacts of the confirmed cases have been identified and line-listed by the contact tracing teams  SMOH and WHO recruited, trained and deployed six (6) additional contact tracing teams in , Nguru, and LGAs  Seven (7) new alerts have been received and investigated in Nguru, and Gujba LGAs  Conducted high-level advocacy, led by the Hon Commissioner for Health (Vice-Chairman of State Task Force) and other members of State Rapid Response Team (SRRT), to Bade LGA emirate council to sensitize traditional leaders and community members on prevention of COVID-19 in their communities. EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SUMMARY:  The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases remains thirty-two (32): Sixteen (16) cases from , eight (8) cases from Bade, five (5) cases from Nguru, and one (1) case each from , Tarmuwa, and Gujba LGAs  Total confirmed cases of COVID-19 amongst Health Care Workers (HCWs) in the state remain nine (9): Six (6) nurses, two (2) doctors, and one (1) laboratory scientist  Twenty-four (24) confirmed cases are on admission in isolation centers. All are in stable condition  Three (3) cases have recovered and discharged from the isolation center two days ago  The total number of contacts who completed the 14-days follow-up as of today is one hundred and twenty-four (124). None of them developed any symptoms  The total number of deaths due to COVID-19 in the state is five (5)  The total number of samples taken for testing remains sixty-three (63). Of these, thirty-two (32) returned positive, eighteen (18) are negative and the result of thirteen (13) remaining samples is being awaited.

THEMATIC INTERVENTIONS

Coordination:  Conducted high-level advocacy, led by the Hon Commissioner for Health (Vice-Chairman of State Task Force) and other members of State Rapid Response Team (SRRT), to Bade LGA emirate council to sensitize traditional leaders and community members on prevention of COVID-19 in their communities  Conducted daily COVID-19 response coordination meetings with partners and stakeholders.

Surveillance and Epidemiology:  Conducted contact tracing and line-listed fifty-one (51) new contacts of the confirmed cases in Gujba, Damaturu, Geidam and Nguru LGAs  Continued monitoring of one hundred and forty-five (145) contacts of confirmed cases  Seven (7) new alerts have been received and investigated in Nguru, Potiskum and Gujba LGAs  SMOH and WHO recruited, trained, and deployed six (6) additional contact tracing teams in Gujba, Nguru, and Tarmuwa LGAs.

Point of Entry (POE):  WHO recruited, trained and deployed four (4) teams to strengthen surveillance at Damaturu LGA POE  Conducted monitoring of 58 quarantined Almajiris who were deported from Adamawa to Yobe state  Continued monitoring of 62 Almajiris who were deported from Nasarawa to Yobe state ten days ago.

Case Management:  No new admissions in the state isolation centers  Twenty-four (24) confirmed cases on admission in the state isolation centers are in stable condition.

Infection Prevention and Control (IPC):  Conducted fumigation and disinfection of households of confirmed cases in Bade, Gujba, and Tarmuwa LGAs.  Provided additional technical support to LGA RRT and IPC teams to scale-up contact tracing and disinfection of confirmed or suspected households in Gujba, Tarmuwa, Geidam, Damaturu, and Nguru LGAs Laboratory and Diagnostic Support:  No samples collected today. Following-up with NCDC to retrieve pending sample results  The total number of samples taken for testing remains sixty-three (63). Risk Communication and Social Mobilization:  Continued house to house mobilization by Voluntary Community Mobilizers (VCMs) in high-risk LGAs.  Continued public sensitization via radio jingles, motorized campaign and TV program across the state

Logistics and Operational Support:  Distributed commodities and PPEs to POE teams, and IPC teams in SSH Isolation centers  Received donation of COVID-19 commodities from the First Lady’s initiative  Carried-out proper documentation of COVID-19 commodities in the new store in YSUTH

CHALLENGES:  Inadequate PPEs and IPC commodities to sustain large scale response across the state  Delay in retrieving sample results from NCDC Laboratory  Leakage and weak enforcement of interstate border closure at POEs.

NEXT STEP(S): • Scale-up IPC measures in all COVID-19 isolation centers in the state • Continue resource mobilization and community sensitization on COVID-19 prevention and control • Continue active case search, contact tracing, and monitoring of contacts of new cases • Follow-up with NCDC and retrieve pending sample results.
