TITLE COVID-19 Pandemic Situation Report SERIAL NUMBER 15 EPID-WEEK 20 DATE 14 May 2020

HIGHLIGHTS:  Twelve (12) new confirmed case(s) reported today: Six (6) cases from Bade LGA, three (3) cases from , and one (1) case each from Nguru, , and Tarmuwa LGAs.  Three (3) cases have been discharged from the State Specialist Hospital (SSH) Damaturu isolation center today  Twenty-four (24) confirmed cases are on admission in isolation centers. All are in stable condition  Six (6) new alerts have been received and investigated in Damaturu, , Gashua, and LGAs  Twenty-five (25) contacts of the new confirmed cases have been identified and line-listed by the contact tracing teams. And they are being [closely] monitored.

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SUMMARY:  The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases is now thirty-two (32): Sixteen (16) cases from Damaturu, eight (8) cases from Bade, five (5) cases from Nguru, and one (1) case each from , Tarmuwa, and Gujba LGAs  Total confirmed cases of COVID-19 amongst Health Care Workers (HCWs) in the state are nine (9): Six (6) nurses, two (2) doctors, and one (1) laboratory scientist.  Twenty-four (24) confirmed cases are on admission in isolation centers. All are in stable condition  Three (3) cases have been discharged from the State Specialist Hospital (SSH) Damaturu isolation center today  Total number of deaths due to COVID-19 in the state is five (5)  The total number of samples collected so far is sixty-three (63). Of these, thirty-two (32) returned positive, eighteen (18) are negative and the result of thirteen (13) remaining samples is being awaited.

THEMATIC INTERVENTIONS

Coordination:  Conducted daily COVID-19 response coordination meeting with partners and stakeholders  SMOH and partners are also supporting LGA teams to scale-up contact tracing, monitoring contacts in quarantine, and risk communication for the prevention and control of COVID-19 infections.

Surveillance and Epidemiology:  Conducted contact tracing and line-listed twenty-five (25) new contacts of the confirmed cases in Bade and Nguru LGAs.  Ninety-three (93) Contact(s) completed 14 days follow-up. None developed symptoms.  Continued monitoring of one hundred and five (105) contacts of confirmed cases.  Conducted active case search in across all LGAs in collaboration with the LGA RRT teams.

Point of Entry (POE):  Conducted supportive supervision and monitoring of screening exercise at POE in Potiskum LGAs.  Continued monitoring of 62 Almajiris in quarantine facility who were deported from Nasarawa to Yobe state eight days ago.

Infection Prevention and Control (IPC):  Conducted training of drivers and warehouse staff on COVID-19 IPC with support from WHO  Providing additional technical support to LGA RRT and IPC teams to scale-up contact tracing and disinfection of confirmed or suspected households in Geidam, Damaturu, and Nguru LGAs. Laboratory and Diagnostic Support:  No samples collected today. Following-up with NCDC to retrieve pending sample results.  The total number of samples collected so far is sixty-three (63). Of these, thirty-two (32) returned positive, eighteen (18) are negative and the result of thirteen (13) remaining samples is being awaited.

Risk Communication and Social Mobilization:  Conducted engagement meeting with the leadership of NURTW, Keke-Napep, traders associations on compulsory use of face-mask, social distancing, number of passengers and compliance with lockdown order in Nguru LGA  Continued house to house mobilization by Voluntary Community Mobilizers (VCMs) in high-risk LGAs  Supported printing of additional posters and flyers on COVID-19 self-assessment with support from NSHIP-AF.

Logistics and Operational Support:  Conducted training of 8 health workers (6 drivers and 3 warehouse staff) on COVID-19 IPC with support from WHO.  Distributed chlorine solution, face-mask, and hand sanitizers to the drivers for use in their vehicles  Provided pamphlet on IPC to be pasted on warehouse vehicles regarding IPC for passengers.  Distributed commodities and PPEs to the surveillance team, SSH, and YSUTH Isolation centers.

CHALLENGES:  Inadequate PPEs and IPC commodities to sustain large scale response across the state  Delay in retrieving sample results from NCDC Laboratory  Leakage and weak enforcement of interstate border closure at POEs.

NEXT STEP(S): • Scale-up IPC measures amongst HCWs and in all COVID-19 isolation centers • Continue resource mobilization and community sensitization on COVID-19 prevention and control • Continue active case search, contact tracing, and monitoring of contacts of new cases • Follow-up with NCDC and retrieve pending sample results.
