YOBE BRIEF HISTORY Yobe State was curved out of the defunct Borno State in 1991. The state covers an estimated area of 47,153 square kilometer and shares international boundary to the north with the Republic of Niger, to the west with Jigawa and Bauchi states, to the east with Borno State, and to the south with Borno and Gombe states. The northern part of the state is characterized by desert, active sand dunes and difficult terrain, while the southern part is mountainous and undulating hills. Yobe State has a population of 2,321,591 as per the national head count of 2006. The major spoken languages are English, Kanuri, Hausa and Fulfulde. The state has 17 Local Government Areas, and with 14 Emirate Councils. The Emir of Fika is the Chairman of tghe Traditional Council of Chiefs. The state capital is Gusau, with major towns such as, Kaura Namoda, Talata Mafara, Gummi and Tsafe. Zamfara State has an area of 33,764.9 square kilometer, with a population of 3,259,846 in 2006 census. There are 14 Local Government Areas, 147 Registration Areas (wards), three (3) Senatorial Districts, Seven with (7) Federal Constituencies, twenty four (24) State Assembly Constituencies, and 2,516 polling units . The primary occupation of the populace is farming. Another economic activity is livestock production: sheep, cattle and goat are reared on a large scale. The main languages are Hausa, Fulani, Dakarkari and Kamaku. Zamfara State is predominantly Muslim.
