TITLE COVID-19 Pandemic Situation Report SERIAL NUMBER 24 EPID-WEEK 21 DATE 23 May 2020

HIGHLIGHTS:  Two (2) newly confirmed case(s) have been reported from LGA  Two (2) new case(s) have been admitted in the state isolation center  Twenty-eight (28) contacts of the newly confirmed cases have been identified and line-listed by the contact tracing teams in Bade, Bursari, and Nguru LGAs  No new discharge from the isolation centers  Three (3) new alerts have been received and investigated in Potiskum, , and Bade LGAs.

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SUMMARY:  The total number of confirmed COVID-19 case(s) is forty-seven (47): Nineteen (19) cases from Damaturu, ten (10) cases from Nguru, nine (9) cases from Bade, three (3) cases from Potiskum, and one (1) case each from , , Bursari, Fika, and LGAs  Total confirmed case(s) of COVID-19 amongst Health Care Workers (HCWs) in the state is thirteen (13): Seven (7) nurses, four (4) doctors, one (1) physiotherapist, and one (1) laboratory scientist  The total number of deaths due to COVID-19 in the state is six (6)  Total number of case(s) who recovered and have been discharged from the state isolation centers is eight (8)  The total number of contacts who completed the 14-days follow-up without symptoms as of today is one hundred and fifty-three (153)  Thirty-two (32) confirmed cases in the isolation center are in stable condition  The total number of samples taken for testing is ninety-one (91). Of these, forty-seven (47) returned positive, forty results (40) are negative and the results of four (4) remaining samples are being awaited.

THEMATIC INTERVENTIONS Coordination:  SMOH and partners are supporting LGA RRT COVID-19 coordination meetings as well as contact tracing, contacts monitoring contact and risk communication activities in high-burden LGAs  Conducted daily COVID-19 response coordination meeting with partners and stakeholders

Surveillance and Epidemiology:  Twenty-eight (28) contacts of the newly confirmed cases have been identified and line-listed by the contact tracing teams in Bade, Bursari, and Nguru LGAs  Continued monitoring of two hundred and eighty (280) contacts of confirmed cases  Three (3) new alerts have been received and investigated in Potiskum, Damaturu, and Bade LGAs.

Point of Entry (POE):  Continued monitoring of 58 quarantined Almajiris who were deported from Adamawa to Yobe state eight (8) days ago  Continued collaboration with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to reduce bribery and leakage at POEs across the state.

Case Management:  Two (2) new admissions in the state isolation center  No new discharges from the state isolation centers today  Thirty-two (32) confirmed cases on admission in the state isolation centers are in stable condition.

Infection Prevention and Control (IPC):  Continued decontamination and fumigation of households of confirmed cases in Potiskum, Bursari, and Gulani LGAs  Conducted sensitization on the use of face masks in the Potiskum cattle market.

Laboratory and Diagnostic Support:  No new samples were taken from patients today  Following-up with NCDC to retrieve pending sample results  The total number of samples taken for testing is ninety-one (91). Of these, forty-seven (47) returned positive, forty results (40) are negative and the results of four (4) remaining samples are being awaited.

Risk Communication and Social Mobilization:  SPHCMB in conjunction with WHO and Ministry of Information is planning to scale up risk communication including motorized campaigns in high-burden LGAs  Conducted sensitization on COVID-19 prevention in Potiskum central market  Continued public sensitization via radio jingles, motorized campaigns, and TV programs  Distributed IEC materials to two hundred and eighty-nine (289) persons in the Potiskum cattle market.

Logistics and Operational Support:  Distributed COVID-19 supplies to POEs and Surveillance teams  Conducted supervision and monitoring of IPC practices amongst drivers deployed to isolation centers and logistics team.

CHALLENGES:  Inadequate PPEs and IPC commodities to sustain high-quality IPC in isolation centers and public places  Insecurity and military operations affecting risk communication activities in remote communities of Geidam, Gulani and Gujba LGAs  Passengers from other parts of the country still illegally sneaking into Yobe state.

NEXT STEP(S): • Deploy additional motorized campaign vehicles to scale-up risk communication in high-burden LGAs • Scale-up IPC measures in all COVID-19 isolation centers in the state • Strengthen enforcement of interstate border closure • Follow-up with NCDC to retrieve pending sample results from Abuja • Continue active case search, contact tracing, and monitoring of contacts of new cases.
