About the Artist and Xolotl:

Oscar Becerra-Mora is one Mexico’s great contemporary artists. He has dedicated more than 10 years to the art of cartonería: vibrantly painted papier-mâché sculptures incorporating modeled cardboard. Xólotl: Dios Perro showcases Mr.Becerra‘s mastery of cartonería, and is his take on a mythological creature from the Aztec culture. The god Xólotl (pronounced Sho-lotel) is the brother of Quetzalcóatl (the feathered serpent-god of fire), and was charged with guarding the sun as it passed through the underworld. It is said that he helped Quetzalcóatl in the creation of humankind. One of his defining qualities is his ability to transform into other figures, animals or objects. Xólotl: Dios Perro is the artist’s expression of the myth and a fantastic tool to stimulate the imagination. Xólotl: Dios Perro is the first is the first monumental alebrije that has ever been exhibited in the United States.

La Cocina Exhibit

The Mexican Cultural Center, in partnership with Museo de la Americas and the Consulate General of Mexico presented the exhibit titled La Cocina exhibit. La Cocina exhibit officially opened on October 17th, 2013 and was originally scheduled to end on January 12th, 2014. To give visitors the opportunity to view the exhibit and to continue to attend monthly programming at the Museo de las Américas, it was extended until May 25, 2014. This meant that 270 students took part in activities related to Latin American art as part of the La Cocina exhibition.

Three artists from Herencia Milenaria (a group from Tonala, Mexico, where the ceramic art originated) participated in a walkthrough prior to the opening of the exhibit, in the opening ceremony, and in pottery technique workshops that were open to the Museo visitors. Two artists, also from Herenica Milenaria, visited Denver on November 7th and 8th, 2013. Artist Oliverio Balcells, also participated in the walkthrough and opening ceremony. Related activities included a lecture on Talavera and Tonala pottery techniques, a master lecture on healthy native foods, and three community markets. The Museo also participated in the Denver Arts Week, the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) celebrations (which the MCC also offered independently at the MCC Gallery and in collaboration with other Metro Area organizations), and on the First Friday Art Walk at the Art District on Santa Fe.
