Quantity/ Extent 32 linear feet Language of Materials Spanish English Biographical Note Lola Álvarez Bravo was born Dolores Martínez de Anda in 1903 in Lagos de Moreno, a small city in Jalisco on Mexico's Pacific coast. She moved to Mexico City as a young child, after her mother left the family under mysterious circumstances. Her father died when she was a young teenager, and she was then sent to live with the family of her half brother. It was here that she met the young Manuel Alvarez Bravo, a neighbor. They married in 1925 and moved to Oaxaca where Manuel was an accountant for the federal government. Manuel had taken up photography as an adolescent; he taught Lola and they took pictures together in Oaxaca. Manuel also taught Lola how to develop film and make prints in the darkroom. -

Les musées d’ethnologie: culture, politique et changement institutionnel. Camille Mazé, Frédéric Poulard, and Christelle Ventura, eds. Paris: Éditions du Comité des travaux historiques et scientifiques, 2013. 288 pp.* Reviewed by Sally Price There’s a word missing from the title of this book, which is completely devoted to French “museums of ethnology.” Readers looking for an assessment of the history or current state of ethnographic museums may be disappointed by this narrow focus, in which no more than an occasional tip of the hat is given to museological developments outside of France or literature about them. Readers looking for reflections on French culture and politics will, on the other hand, find a great deal of interest. This is a book about France—its politics, its ideologies, its social hierarchies, its cultural self-image, and the structure of its academic disciplines—all through the lens of museological history. (No attention is given to museums in France’s overseas departments; that’s a study waiting to be tackled by future researchers.) Recent work on particular museums by young Ph.D.s accounts for most (not all) of the essays. The 20-page introduction (authored by the three editors, only two of whom contribute subsequent chapters) weaves in an out of the themes addressed in the rest of the book, many of which concern the “crisis” in French ethnographic museums of recent decades. Historical events in the nation at large (wars, demographic shifts, industrialization), the role of political power, and the relationship between Paris and the rest of the country are central. -

Author relates this to recent shifts in anthropology and art history/criticism toward an increasing combining of art and anthropology and integration of art with social and cultural developments, and the impact of these shifts on Afro-American studies. To exemplify this, she focuses on clothing (among Maroons in the Guianas), quilts, and gallery art. I will be arguing for the relevance to Afro-American studies of these broader disciplinary changes, which have fundamentally reoriented scholarship on arts that, for the most part, fall outside of what Joseph Alsop (1982) has dubbed "The Great Tradi- tions." Saramaka Maroons on the Brazilian Frontier Richard Price College of William and Mary, Virginia, USA, and Anse Chaudière, Martinique Maroons in the Americas have always been champions at seizing the moment, whether in battles against their colonial enemies or in carving out imaginative economic niches in more recent times. This essay focuses on Maroon men from central Suriname who, in the second half of the nineteenth century, migrated to French Guiana where they monopolized the river transport system that supplied thousands of non-Maroon goldminers in that colony and, in the process, created a new of way of life for themselves and their descendants. The Oyapok region of French Guiana, which borders the Brazilian state of Amapá, might best be considered the distant frontier of a distant frontier B many thousands of kilometers from the metropolitan political center of Paris, many hundreds through the forest from the colonial capital of Cayenne, and, from the perspective of the Saramaka Maroons of central Suriname, at the farthest edge of the known geographical universe. In 1900, the mayor of the Commune de l=Oyapok gave the total population as 304. "A Day in Oaxaca" Created by: Cityseeker 4 Locations Bookmarked Monte Albán "Zapotec Legacy" Wedged between stark elemental features – blue skies and an ochre, parched terra – Monte Albán sits on a flattened promontory, exemplifying nearly 1500 years of pre-Columbian civilization. Monte Albán rises 400 meters (1300 feet) above the valley floor of Oaxaca, and a wave of history, dominated by the cultures of Olmecs, Zapotecs and Mixtecs sweeps by User: (WT-shared) through its pyramidal structures. Shrines, palaces, terraced platforms, Anyludes atwts wikivoyage tombs and mounds are scattered across this significant archaeological site, each pointing to Monte Albán's central role in Mesoamerican civilization. At the core of this complex is the Main Plaza, a monumental structure that is dominated by a series of stairs that amble up its southern platform, while small temples, residences and ballcourts are strewn across its surroundings. Several stone structures indicate that morbid sacrificial activities and ceremonies were conducted here. One of the earliest examples of these structures are the Danzantes, a set of figures that harken to the Olmec culture. A few important stone etchings and carvings found on the site have been encased within an on-site museum. Carretera Oaxaca-Monte Albán, 8 kilometers west of Oaxaca City, Oaxaca Árbol del Tule "Magnificent & Ancient Flora" The Árbol del Tule is a gigantic ahuehuete, or cypress, tree located in the town of Santa Maria del Tule, 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) east of Oaxaca City. This legendary tree measures 36.2 meters around and is anywhere from 1200 to 3000 years old. The tree reportedly grows on a sacred Zapotec site.
