2019 European Elections the Weight of the Electorates Compared to the Electoral Weight of the Parliamentary Groups
2019 European Elections The weight of the electorates compared to the electoral weight of the parliamentary groups Guillemette Lano Raphaël Grelon With the assistance of Victor Delage and Dominique Reynié July 2019 2019 European Elections. The weight of the electorates | Fondation pour l’innovation politique I. DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN THE WEIGHT OF ELECTORATES AND THE ELECTORAL WEIGHT OF PARLIAMENTARY GROUPS The Fondation pour l’innovation politique wished to reflect on the European elections in May 2019 by assessing the weight of electorates across the European constituency independently of the electoral weight represented by the parliamentary groups comprised post-election. For example, we have reconstructed a right-wing Eurosceptic electorate by aggregating the votes in favour of right-wing national lists whose discourses are hostile to the European Union. In this case, for instance, this methodology has led us to assign those who voted for Fidesz not to the European People’s Party (EPP) group but rather to an electorate which we describe as the “populist right and extreme right” in which we also include those who voted for the Italian Lega, the French National Rally, the Austrian FPÖ and the Sweden Democrats. Likewise, Slovak SMER voters were detached from the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) Group and instead categorised as part of an electorate which we describe as the “populist left and extreme left”. A. The data collected The electoral results were collected list by list, country by country 1, from the websites of the national parliaments and governments of each of the States of the Union. We then aggregated these data at the European level, thus obtaining: – the number of individuals registered on the electoral lists on the date of the elections, or the registered voters; – the number of votes, or the voters; – the number of valid votes in favour of each of the lists, or the votes cast; – the number of invalid votes, or the blank or invalid votes. -

Kohout, author of Poor Murderer and the model for the hero of Tom Stoppard's Dogg's Hamlet, Cahoot's Macbeth, left his native Czechoslovakia with his wife Jelena last October 28 to serve as director of the Burgtheater in Vienna. The Czechoslovak authorities granted them a one-year exit visa on the understanding that Kohout would avoid political activity while he was abroad. On his arrival in Vienna Kohout stated that, while he did not renounce anything he had said or writ ten in Czechoslovakia, he preferred to speak out on political matters in his home land. While he was abroad, he said,.he looked forward to attending the opening of productions of some of his plays and to the publication of his novel The Hangwoman (banned in Czechoslovakia, but to be put out in English by G. P. Putnam's Sons early next year). On October 4, three weeks before the expiry of their visa, Kohout and his wife drove to the Austro-Czechoslovak border at Nová Bystřice. -
Symposium Remembering Prague Spring 1968
SYMPOSIUM Introduction to the Symposium Remembering Prague Spring 1968 In the year of the 50th anniversary of the Czechoslovak reform process of 1968, the Czech Sociological Review has invited sociologists and political scientists from various parts of the world to reflect on the place of the Prague Spring in their bi- ographies, both private and academic, and its political significance then and now. With a view to capturing personal memories of those events, the majority of the authors who were invited to contribute to this symposium were born before 1950. The intention was to compose as variegated a set of reflections as could reason- ably be expected—representing different countries, different political positions, and different disciplinary traditions: East as well as West, but also East-and-West in the case of émigré scholars; the various currents within the student movement; Marxism, social democracy, and liberalism; social and political theory and em- pirical research, and so on. The twelve authors who have kindly contributed pa- pers form a fairly heterogeneous group, as each one of them occupies a unique position in relation to the others within the—national or international—political and academic field. Each paper allows the reader to see the Prague Spring in a different light and from a different angle that reflects the specific features of the author’s biography. Achieving this kind of pluralism was one of the main goals behind the project for this symposium. But it is also true that the range of per- spectives included herein could be much broader yet. For instance, there is no voice from any Czech or Slovak who directly participated in the 1968 reform in Czechoslovakia, as, sadly, these participants, at least among sociologists, are no longer alive. -
