EXECUTIVE WORDS

Today we welcome Jacob Mathews and his Metro team to Murdoch Park this afternoon. This should be an exciting clash as both teams chase points to avoid the drop.

After last week’s abandonment of games on Saturday all teams will be hoping for fine weather.

To our sponsors, club patrons, life members, club members and visitors we wish you have an enjoyable afternoon’s football.

Congratulations must go out to Andrew Kirk, our Premier Women’s Coach, as he was nominated for Coach of the Year at the Papatoetoe Sports Awards last week. Attendees from the club were Pam Luhrs, Savuth Thay, Hans Anema and Ave Stevens. An Slecht and yours truly represented the club at our long time club patron Ross Robertson’s farewell dinner, this was for his retirement from Parliament.

On the playing side, our Premier Ladies had a good 2-0 win over Fencibles last weekend taking us to 7th on the table. Goal scorers were Shontelle Stevens and Danielle Hareb (currently on a USA Scholarship, but back playing during her break). They are playing Lynn Avon this weekend who are 5th on the table.

The Juniors start back today after a week off on holiday. Neil Haines ran his holiday football programme last week with 13 boys attending in the terrible weather we had. We are hosting a girls only holiday programme this week with Tessa Popay (Coach Div. 2 Team) and Chanel Stevens taking it.

All the best to all the other Papatoetoe AFC teams playing this weekend.

A big thank you goes out to all the helpers today who make this club run on a weekly basis; An and Pam in the Canteen, Jeff and Chris for the work they are doing in the changing rooms and Jen behind the bar.

Coming up on the 2nd of August we have our first night game of the season, as we play host to our local rivals Manurewa. So put this date in your calendar.

Finally all the best to Paul Margison and the Men’s First team today as you tackle Metro. Here’s hoping we have another 3 points after today’s game.

Yours in football

David Robertson

COACH’S COMMENTS

Good afternoon all and welcome to Metro FC’s players, coaching staff and supporters. As well as this I welcome our own supporters as well. We have only had one game in the last fortnight which was home to Hibiscus Coast. Our game last week against Takapuna was postponed due to weather.

The first half of the game was relatively even, both teams basically having even ball and possession made for showing it was a game either side was able to take the points in. There were a few shots for both teams that did threaten however both keepers played well to keep these out of the net. Halftime saw the score line 0-0.

To the second half and at halftime we emphasized that from our 1st half showing we have every chance to go on and steal a goal to take the game. The lads continued on from the 1st half efforts and with Scott Yearbury taking a perfect opportunity and perfect strike put us up 1-0 roughly midway through the 1st half. With some fresh legs coming on and subs being made we then look to threaten a little more however Hibiscus did not give up continuing to match us. With the lads hard work and urge to not give up Kritik Dass found us a second goal to send us 2-0 up with only a short period of the half left. Hibiscus coast did not give up and with this and there persistence found a goal with minutes left in the game. At the final whistle the boys found themselves victorious winning 2-1.

This victory has now found the table become very compressed and tight. We are equal on points with Manurewa who are 11th and on 13 games as well with us and 3 points off Metro who are 10th and who we have a game in hand over.

To today’s game and I know the lads will be eager to get another win. We know the importance of this match and need to go out and give it 120% for the full 90 minutes. We know 3 points today will go a long way in our season. The table is starting to become very tight at our end and we know any slip up can see us fall but picking up points will also go a long way in helping to climb up the table.

We have a very big home game coming up in a few weeks. We are up against Manurewa on the 2nd of August with kick off at 6PM. This is a very big game for us and we would love to get as much support down as we can. Not only can a win here push us up the table but Manurewa and Papatoetoe have a long history and this will be a very big for both teams and there clubs.

I would like to again thank you the supporters who come down week in week out to support the boys. Enjoy the game and see you all afterwards in the bar. Paul Margison (Margee)/ Hans Anema

RESERVE TEAM Welcome Metro to the home of Papatoetoe AFC.

Today sees us come back from a break due the storm last week, so hopefully our reserves are rested and hungry.

What a week it's been for football, with the World Cup wrapping up, with all the boxes ticked as to why we watch and love the game, whatever the level. Highs and lows, goals galore, nail-biting finishes, just plain biting, penalty shootouts, and a stunning goal in extra time to finish the tournament.

The previous round saw the club supporters celebrate a double celebration, a win for the 1st and Reserves teams, against Hibiscus Coast, which will, I'm sure, show that to our players that they are capable of the results we will need for the rest of the season.

After we went in the changing rooms at half time after soaking up the pressure at 0-0, it was decided that we needed to do something to shake up the game, and substitutions at the turnaround saw Shane loft a ball over the keeper from a long way out, to take the lead, despite the very strong crosswinds. We absorbed more pressure from the young Hibiscus Coast team to get a second goal from player of the day Aaron. This woke the opposition up, although the goal they got was far too easy. Once Preston scored our 3rd goal, I thought the result was a certainty, but Hibiscus came back to make it 3-2 to us. They sniffed a draw and attacked our goal, but Faraz in goal, and the whole back line, kept them out, although the last kick before the final whistle just missed the outside of the post. We'll take the win, thank you.

As I type this, the weather forecast is not looking too bad, so can only hope the wind and rain will hold off until we get in the bar, and we get the chance to see some good football from both sides.

By the way, did I mention that Germany won, and that extra star will look good beside the other three. That's all I'll say.

JUNIOR REPORT

Papatoetoe AFC provided the backdrop for a success NW Football Holiday Programme from 7th-11th July with 13 boys participating. Smiles all round as the boys showed enthusiasm and commitment despite the varying weather conditions. The boys learnt how to develop their talent through, individual drills, game scenarios and video’s on FIFA Laws of the Game. On behalf of the Club and N W Football I would like to thank the Parents for the support provided and positive feedback on seeing your Child develop. All participants are continuing with N W Football Skill Development sessions on Monday nights at Murdoch Park at 4.15pm. Future Holiday programmes will be on offer.

If any parents or players are interested in additional coaching opportunities, please contact Neil for further details:

This week the club hosted a “girls” only holiday programme from Wednesday 16th to Friday 19th. This was run by Division 2 women’s team coach Tessa Popay and Division 2 player Chanel Stevens. There were 15 girls in attendance from across the Counties Manukau area. Thankfully the weather held up for them unlike Neil’s holiday programme.

The club has nominated a number of players in the years 2002-1999 to trial for a place on the Federation’s FTC programme. One 12th grade players was successful last term.

Everyone was pleased to be able to train this week after a few weeks of ground closures albeit it was very cold. By the time of reading hopefully no games were cancelled and everyone got a run.
