We Are North Shore SATURDAY 13th MAY 2017 – KICK OFF 2PM CHATHAM CUP – RD1 OFFICIAL MATCH DAY PROGRAMME OPPOSITION: METRO FC HEAD COACH– Tom Speers Good afternoon and welcome back to the the Hill for the 1st round of the Chatham Cup. I would like to welcome Mike and his Metro team here today, I expect it to be a lot tighter game than when they visited in the first game of season and I'm sure they will be looking to do a lot better than the 7-0 they experienced here that day. I love being part of the Cup and as there is only one cup competition in NZ I'm looking forward to hopefully going far. This club has a rich history in this cup, winning it 6 times, the last being in 1986, so fingers crossed we can progress into the later rounds of the competition and be there or there about towards the end. You can see the success we have had in this competition all over the clubhouse walls and talking with former players who have won it, we know how important it is to the club that we represent the club properly, so unlike the rumours I have been hearing, we will be playing a full strength squad and hoping every club in this competition do the same, resting players when you only have 1 game a week would be disrespectful to the longest cup competition on the planet and also be quite embarrassing for the clubs that do so. I hope you have a good day and hopefully see us progress, get behind the boys and make some noise. HEAD COACH ASST. COACH ASST. They were members of the former top premier New Zealand football league the New Zealand National Soccer League which ended in 2004 to give way to the New Zealand Football Championship. The senior team is led by Mike Taylor – an experienced coach both as a head coach and assistant coach at many levels of NRFL & Regional Football, Mike will be assisted by DoF Ants Owens. Mike previously led the Metro NRFL Reserve Team in 2014. The club has a good history of playing at one of the two top level football leagues in New Zealand after the New Zealand Football Championship, they have also won one of the top leagues in New Zealand football the Northern League in the 1998 season and also managing to set a record of scoring the most goals in any match of the top New Zealand football national cup, the Chatham Cup demolishing Norwest 21–0. We spoke to Alan Parkin on the great achievement of winning the Chatham Cup in 1986. ‘The year before we got beaten in the Chatham Cup Final (1985) against the relegated side of Napier which was very disappointing. They beat us 2-1 at Mt. Smart so to get back into the final the year after was very exciting to right the wrongs from the year before.’ NSU win 5-2 on Aggregate ‘We lost the 1st leg against Mt. Maunganui at the Fuji Stadium (now known as Allen Hill Stadium) which was televised. They were trialing the potential of a 2 legged final which was lucky for us as we lost 1-0 and Kevin Hagan (pictured) missed a penalty!’ Don Jones was the coach at the time and regardless of the fact we didn’t train on either scheduled days (Tues/ Thurs) we managed a 20 minute session before we headed down to Mt. Maungaui for the 2nd leg. We had a few good experienced lads combined with youth Alan Parkin happy about the cup players and Don had the success knack of getting the team to play well. Due to the lack of technology, the 2nd leg wasn’t to be televised but along with our experience and youth we beat them 4-1 to bring the cup back to the Shore.’ ‘Lifting the trophy was great for me me because we were beaten the year before by Napier and we had a really good side that year.’ Kevin Hagan Kevin Hagan, happy despite missing a penalty In the 1st leg. FINAL 2016 Former All White Jarrod Smith gave Birkenhead the lead in the 23rd minute, shooting past Nicholson from the right-hand side of the box, and finding the far corner of the net, and then added a second in the 38th minute, shooting from right in front of goal after the Waitakere defence allowed Godwin Darkwa and Dan Morgan to lay the ball on a plate for him. Waitakere's best chance of the half came in the minutes right before halftime, when Manickum was able to round Birkenhead's keeper, Damian Hirst, but had his shot cleared by Christian Gray a metre from the line. Both sides produced chances at the start of the second half, but couldn't find the back of the net, Waitakere's best coming when Steven MacDonald was played in behind near the hour mark, forcing Hirst to make a double save, and Birkenhead's shortly before that, when they couldn't get a clean shot off in a goalmouth scramble. Needing at least two goals as the game entered the final half hour of regulation time, Waitakere began to hold more and more of the ball, but couldn't break through.
