Today is the second game in a run of five home a part of the Birko DNA to be competitive, resilient, fixtures at Shepherds with Western Springs, and relentless. Teams come here expecting a North Shore and Eastern Suburbs all yet to come competitive test and we aim to give them one. in the Northern League, daunting on its own, Possibly the critical piece in all this pre-game if today wasn’t enough for you! After beating comparing and assessment is that we continue Auckland United, in Round 3 of the Chatham Cup, to be a club that promotes youth. We have a few weeks back, I guess it was only likely that we probably the youngest average aged squad in would draw Auckland City as a follow up!?! Again, the Northern League’s U23 league, and our senior that old maxim that you don’t win knock-out team is similarly extremely “youthful” and still very tournaments without beating the best teams, competitive. rings altogether TOO LOUD! Comparing teams prior to a match can often be as There is not too much to say about Auckland City, useful as running around the lounge head-butting they are, since their inception in 2004, simply the furniture, with similar mind-numbing results. the most successful football team in Aotearoa / So now is the time to forget any lingering neuroses New Zealand, perennial winners of the Football or insecurities and lap up the majesty of the Championship, as well as regular attendees at the spectacle about to unfold in front of us. OFC Champions League (which they have won 9 times!) and also Aotearoa / New Zealand’s most This will be a tight game against strong opponents. successful club at the FIFA Club World Cup. So, It may well have some fraught moments but there no pressure then…?! will be excitement, drama and passion with the RED ‘n’ WHITE Army in FULL VOICE, thundering But, and there is always a but, it is just another their “12th man” support from all corners of the ninety minute contest, that requires both sides to ground! be able to compete on the same field, with the same officials and nothing, and lets reiterate this, Lastly a HUGE thanks to all of you, all the families, nothing is written in stone. In fact, Auckland City supporters and players that rock the Red ‘n’ White have NEVER won the Chatham Cup. Although strip all over Birkenhead and beyond! This is a time Central United (a “parent” club to Auckland City) to Stand Up together, LOUD and PROUD! have won it 5 times! Ok, so as we were saying this is a BIG game, a massive challenge and Let’s hear you!! something to get very, VERY excited about! One thing you will all know is that no team David Williams comes to Shepherds Park expecting to win, it is Birkenhead United Club President birkenheadunited.org.nz @BirkenheadUnitedAFC @BUAFC_NZ @birkenhead_united_afc 5 6 Birkenhead United AFC | 2021 Northern League COACH’S COMMENTS WELCOME TO JOSE AND HIS AUCKLAND CITY PLAYERS AND STAFF FOR TODAY’S CHATHAM CUP FIXTURE. Not sure if there’s many better places to be than Shepherds Park on a Sunday for a Chatham cup game, especially between these two sides! Hopefully the weather holds up and we can get another huge vocal crowd out here to cheer on the team. We’re currently on a good run and although last weekend’s game was a bit scrappy it’s all about 3 points first and foremost. The three points have moved us up into fourth place. There’s not much in it from 2nd down to about 6th, so each and every result is as important as one another. Birkenhead United are in a great place with the youngsters coming through with another home grown player coming through last week. 16 year old Everton O’Leary made his starting debut for us in our 3-1 win against West Coast Rangers, so I would like to extend a congratulations to Everton, and we look forward to seeing him involved in Birkenhead colours moving forward. The development team are having a great season with the team full of quality young players and are all pushing for first team squad for 2022. We all know it’s going to be a bit of a giant killing act today but we will be up for it. We look forward to seeing you around the club and hopefully putting on an entertaining match for you all this afternoon.
