The First Word My blood is red… and gold!

Welcome to Hutt Park. Another season rolls around and with it ends the busiest time of the year for all involved ‘behind the scenes’ at Stop Out. Our focus continues to be on our ’Football for All’ philosophy and in 2016 our Senior numbers are consistent with 5 Men’s teams, 3 Masters and 3 Women’s teams. And proudly we are the only club in the region with Women’s and Men’s Central League teams—and no with their Nix influence , do not count as a Men’s Central League club.

There has been significant growth in our junior ranks. Playing numbers are one thing, however we are putting a greater focus on the player experience of our youngsters and development of our junior coaches to foster a culture second to none in the region. Yes we have a great club spirit already but the extension of that is by offering the total club experience for players of all levels and abilities then loyalty will naturally occur.

Integral to this philosophy is the work of our new U17 coach Alistair Yates and newly appointed Junior Coaching Director Adam Reynard with support from 2nd team Captain Troy Peek. The summer period has seen significant recruitment in this area where in 2016 we will have two U17 teams entered for the first time ever in the local competitions.

Our senior teams have a high calibre and settled coaching group. Chris Sambrooke is supported by Stu Pyne in the Men’s Central League. Paul Commerford is back as Manager. Jason Coombe and Adam Reynard are in charge of the 2nd team in Cap 2. Marty Dutton returns to the helm with the newly promoted 3rds in Cap 5. And Hayden Thorne takes over the mantle for the 4ths in Cap 8 and the 5ths in Cap 9. (See later in this programme for a Women’s update)

So to today’s game. We welcome Paul Ifill’s Wairarapa United. Last year at Hutt Park was one of our best performances of the season and we came away with a 5-1 victory.

Our fourth place finish in 2015 took many by surprise In our return to Central League but many of us at Stop Out knew that the behind the scenes work over the last five years and the consecutive Premier League titles was a stepping stone to bigger and better things. 2016 will be an interesting campaign with three Central League clubs; Olympic, Wests and Wellington United now having closely aligned Academies as part of their make-up. Then there’s Team Wellington and the Miramar link. Not a lot of traditional clubs left really. But I guess that’s the changing face of football.

Welcome to Hutt Park and our Stop Out hospitality!

Meet our new Junior Coaching Director

With Scotty Easthope’s move to Samoa and an exciting coaching opportunity with Samoa Football Federation, it left a huge gap in our junior coaching development area.

But step in club stalwart and budding fulltime coach Adam Reynard. Adam has been in the role since February and has hit the ground running.

So who is Adam Reynard?

I am 22 years old and have been a Stop Out player since the age of 10.

I have previously worked in roles as a Junior Development Coach at Tawa Football Club. And more recently I had a role as an Assistant coach at the Wellington Phoenix Football Academy.

Through my various junior and youth roles I have experience at various levels of the game and know what is required in order to make it at each level, something I hope to share with you all at Stop Out.

My role as Junior Coaching Director means that I am involved with almost everything to do with the junior club from putting in place coaches for our teams, assisting coaches in their development and session delivery, selecting players through trials, working with players at Skill Centres and Fun Football Programmes and developing our vast array of talented players.

It is a special time to be part of the Stop Out club and I am very excited about the future ventures that we are working on. As a club we are striving to be a leader in the local football landscape, a club that stands out above the rest; through our delivery, our coaching and our development programmes that we have in place to suit players at all levels.

‘Football for All’ is in our DNA, it is who we are and we are all working together to push the Stop Out club forward to the next level.

My passion lies in developing people. I love to see people striving to be their best, and being a positive influence in their community. I am looking to work on the great work already done in the club and encourage our player, whatever level they are at to strive toward their goals inside and outside of our game.

I hope to meet all of you at some point throughout this season and beyond.

C'mon Stop Out! 5 Adam Reynard, Stop Out JCD

From the Chairman

Firstly a warm welcome and best wishes to all Stop Out members and supporters for the 2016 season, as well as guests to our home at Hutt Park.

This season is one we are all looking forward to again build on the many accomplishments achieved over the past few years. These achievements have been extensive thanks to the hard work and commitment from our Committee, coaches and management staff. Whilst the off season has provided opportunity for a well-earned break for many, much work has also been progressed behind the scenes in preparation for the 2016 season. So firstly I’d like to acknowledge some of this work and thank those for their substantial efforts to get the ball rolling for 2016 as follows:

Firstly a warm welcome to our new Committee members who have hit the ground running through assisting with the completion of a number of important tasks.

For the first time in the Club’s history, we have managed to secure the services of a dedicated Club Manager and Craig Darby has been appointed to this role. This appointment now provides opportunity for the Committee to afford more focused time on strategic planning, with assistance from our Club Manager to deliver a broad range of tasks which will benefit all members.

Many thanks to our Stop Out Supporters (SOS) adjunct for their generous contribution to assist with much anticipated upgrades to the clubrooms and the purchase of new chairs. This work was completed in January, and I’m sure everyone appreciates the continued upgrades to our home.

In the Junior ranks, 2016 will see the commencement of an Alliance with Eastbourne to field quality teams across Junior Premier leagues. The Alliance is not a merger – but rather an opportunity to provide junior players from both Clubs to play and succeed at the highest levels in local competitions. Many thanks to the team who have worked tirelessly to get this initiative across the line.

Alistair Yates has made an immediate impact as a new Committee member to take on the challenge to grow our Youth player base. In the short time since his 6 appointment the Club will has in excess of 40 players lining up in the U17 age group leagues. This is a major achievement and thanks Ally for this great work.

In our Senior Men’s ranks considerable effort behind the scenes has been progressed to strengthen and grow our player base to ensure we are well placed to build on our . achievements from last season and to cement Stop Out as one of the regions premier Clubs.

A warm welcome to all of our new players and coaches.

This same work has continued across our Women’s teams who will continue to push for

success in the Central and Premier leagues and push for higher honours. Well done team for all of your hard work.

As always our largest membership base is across our junior ranks ranging from the First Kicks programme through to the under 14 age group leagues. Thanks again to all the coaches and supporters for your great work.

Our coaching programmes continue to develop to support players of all ages. A special thanks to Adam Reynard for the exceptional efforts undertaken to firstly inherit and then create and grow what is now regarded a model player development programme in our region.

To wrap up, I’d like to share an important thought.

I firmly believe the successes we have enjoyed have been underwritten by disregarding the “why we can’t” excuses. Rather Stop Out focuses on the “why can’t we” opportunities. It’s a simple mantra, and one I’d like all members to embrace and share as it will only make us better.

All the best one and all and bring on the 2016 season.

. 2016 Central League preview

Welcome to the new 2016 season. For the first game we welcome Paul Ifill and his Wairarapa United side to Hutt Park to kick off the Central League season.

We have seen some changes in the off season with Scott Easthope Chris Sambrooke leaving to take up a great opportunity as Technical Director at Football Federation Samoa. We were delighted to bring Stu Pyne on board into the coaching team for the season. Stu has a huge amount of knowledge and his attention to detail will be of great value.

For the Reserve team we are delighted to have Jason Coombe and Adam Reynard taking the reins for the new season and hope that they bring success and promotion with the great bunch of young players in the squad.

In terms of players we welcome all returning players and are looking forward to seeing the new arrivals; Luis Corrales, Chris Campbell, Michael McClutcheon, Lewis Francis and James Sharpe make their debuts in a competitive game.

We are looking to build on what was a strong first season in the Central League in 2015. We recovered from a slow start to finish strongly in fourth place and hope to start the new season with some strong performances. Wairarapa first up will be a great test following up from our two games last season where each team won their home games in what were both very competitive fixtures.

It is an exciting time for the club and we will work hard to put on some high quality and entertaining football games at Hutt Park this

year.

Good luck to all teams this season.

Stop Out vs Samoan Development team

In our last hit out of pre-season we hosted the Samoan side coached by Scott Easthope as part of their build up for the OFC Champions league and on to the Nations Cup.

Whilst we dominated much of the possession and created a few chances we fell behind to a goal on the break around 20 minutes into the game. We equalised 10 minutes later and went into half-time at 1-1.

The second half followed the same pattern, Samoa were well organised and pressured the ball well. We had some moments in possession that were good but overall we struggled to dominate possession in the right areas as we would expect to.

After creating plenty of chances and forcing some good saves we fell behind to a quality goal from a set piece.

Although the result wasn’t what we wanted it was a great occasion and gave us a great hit out to end our pre-season. We wish Scott and the Samoan side all the best for their upcoming tournaments.

11 Women’s Update

In 2016 our focus is all about promoting the talented youth coming

into Senior football balanced alongside some of our more

experienced senior players to form our top two women’s teams.

The club this year has decided to retain three strong women’s teams with good depth and cover across all sides, rather than stretch

ourselves too thinly across four teams as we have managed in the past. However with the way playing numbers are going it seems likely we will need to enter a fourth team during the middle of the season.

Our Women’s Central League side who finished 6th last year in our inaugural Central League season with a game in hand, are aiming for a top 4 finish this season. That is our main objective but of course our first aim is to retain Women’s Central League status for 2017.

It’s a tough competition and the balance of power is spread evenly between Central and Capital

Federation teams with four a piece. Our travel stretches from Moturoa in Taranaki, plus

matches in Palmerston North against No. Women’s Central League 2016 Valeron, Massey University and PN Marist. GK Stephanie Simmons Local opponents are Wellington United, 2 Melanie MacDougall Seatoun and .

3 Radha McGlashan The side will again be coached by Mike Gibbs 4 Sasha Gray and this year will be assisted by Dennis Tapp. We also welcome back Manager Jamie Calder. 5 Rebecca Williams 6 Melissa Prattley The Squad has seven new players which gives us a good balance of experience and youth. 7 Aimee Sanson Everyone knows that places are not certain 8 Anja Vollmond-Madesn and they have to perform and compete for starting spots - which we are seeing during 9 Laura Dobie the training sessions and players asking what 10 Jessica Kincaid they have to do to get that starting spot.

11 Emily Jones The WCL side will be co-captained by long 12 April Gallagher serving club player Aimee Sanson and new to

13 Emerald Devereux-McGlashan Stop Out Rhiannon Jones who has just come back from UK and has had previous Women’s 12 14 Kassandra Clendon Central League experience with Waterside 15 Rhiannon Jones Karori.

Our Reserves team this year will be coached by Brendan Marsh and assisted by Terry Ross and will play in the Women’s Premier League.

This side is chock full of younger players with a view of them gaining invaluable game time in a very competitive league, with the potential of pushing for Women’s Central League spots as the season rolls out. The added experience of some of our clubs longer serving players will also make this side competitive.

rd Our Women’s 3 side will be plying their trade in Division 2. They are coached by Dean Mildenhall. This side is the club’s social team with many players having played between 50 to

100 games for the club since women’s football was re-introduced in 2008. No doubt the aim is for an enjoyable season with hope of winning No Women’s Premier League 2016 promotion to Division 1.

Welcome home Luis

2016 sees the welcome return of Luis Corrales to the Stop Out club.

Luis came out to and played for us in the 2006 season appearing in 17 matches and scoring 8 goals.

Since then Luis has had a stellar career in NZ playing Central League and ASB Premiership football in .

He is currently playing for Team Wellington in the O League playoffs and we expect to see Luis (and Steve Gulley) back in red and gold later this month.

It's a very warm welcome home to Hutt Park and the expectation of a goal or two in 2016!

Most players have a bit of a break over the

Futsal White summer period, but for striker Micky Maluvik he swaps football boots for trainers and gets into the Futsal groove (for the oldies, it was called indoor football in your day).

Micky has been a Futsal White (our National team) for many years and with over 40 appearances and 24 goals has as much scoring success indoors as he does in the 11 man game.

After the OFC Championship played in February and held in Fiji where NZ finished second to the Solomon Islands, Micky 14 announced his retirement from International Futsal. More time now to score goals on Saturdays!

The Last Word! Life-long Stop Out fan Mike Barton gives us his Johan Cruyff perspective on the April 25, 1947 - March 24, 2016 beautiful game!

A week ago Johan Cruyff died. He was, I am led to believe, the finest player I never saw play. In a way I once did. It was on a flickering screen in small rented room at the Wellington Museum at an event put on by Wellington's Dutch Club. The film had been flown over along with a few newsreels. The crowd in the room were partisan in that they were mostly Dutch and just wanting to celebrate the Ajax win. Of course we knew the result. This screening was about three weeks after the actual match. Two things shone. Firstly, Johan Cruyff and secondly the 'Total Football' of the Ajax side. Cruyff thin, athletic and with a first touch to die for. He seemed to love the ball and the ball seemed to love him. There were other good players on the pitch but he had that something extra. That certain quality that nearly defies description.

Secondly, he took that skill into the system, that the great coach Rinus Michels had honed, of Total Football. A fluid system where players swapped positions so that tactical roles were filled. From then on my friends and I started to read more about the player. We loved the fact that he was an Amsterdam local and was one of those kids who would appear pitch-side to watch training sessions. This was his team in his neighbourhood. In an interview that I watched years later he said that on his first team debut he didn't feel nervous. He didn't because he knew the players. Firstly from watching them train and then from training with them and then playing with them. Cruyff lived about five hundred metres from the old Ajax ground and his mother worked there. It seems he would, as a child, even have lunch at the ground.

The other thing my friends and I were shocked by was that the great star smoked. Even though many in his own team smoked it somehow seemed wrong to see that fit lithe star with a cigarette. Cruyff was eloquent and left some great quotes about the game. Two that stick in the mind are “Technique is not being able to juggle a ball 1000 times. Anyone can do that by practising. Then you can work in the circus. Technique is passing the ball with one touch, with the right speed, at the right foot of your team mate.” and “When you play a match, it is statistically proven that players actually have the ball 3 minutes on average … So, the most important thing is: what do you do during those 87 minutes when you do not have the ball. That is what determines whether you’re a good player or not.” The one moment I think of most is his goal for Barcelona against Atletico in 1974. A goal as enigmatic as his words “If I wanted you to understand it, I would have explained it better.”
