■■CRICKET Aussies take first Ashes blood

Australia won the first Ashes test by a huge margin of 251 runs yes- terday after dismissing England for 146 in its second innings on the final day. Offspinner Nathan Lyon was often unplayable with 6-49 and passed 350 test wickets in a re- markable turnaround for the Aus- tralians, who had been reduced to 122-8 in their first innings at a hostile Edgbaston. “It’s disappointing,” England captain Joe Root told the BBC. “We got ourselves in a really strong position.” Allrounder Chris Woakes pro- vided England’s top score with a defiant 37 at No. 9 after the hosts crumbled from 60-1 to 97-7. Woakes was the last man out in the 53rd over to Pat Cummins (4-32), sending the ball to Steve Smith in the slips as England col- lapsed in the afternoon. England had resumed after lunch on 85-4. Jos Buttler (1) went in the first over, bowled by Cummins, and Jonny Bairstow was then caught by Cameron Bancroft off Cum- mins for his 100th test wicket. In what has been a nightmare test at times for the on-field um- pires, Bairstow opted to review Joel Wilson’s decision but he was unsuccessful, leading one BBC pundit to exclaim “Joel’s got one right!” Lyon reached the 350-wicket landmark when Ben Stokes (6) was caught behind. The spinner went on to dismiss Moeen Ali for his five-for and had Stuart Broad caught by Smith for a golden duck. Jimmy Anderson came out to bat despite lingering injury con- cerns – he bowled only four overs in the entire test – and denied England’s Jonny Bairstow sinks in despair after being dismissed by Australian paceman Pat Cummins on day five of the first Ashes Lyon his hat-trick. test at Edgbaston. ■■FOOTBALL Valuable win for MCUFC

Mid Canterbury United needed to win big on Saturday to improve their all important goal differen- tial, and that’s exactly what they did. They picked up a massive 10-0 win over AFC at the Ashburton Domain on Satur- day which meant they picked up some much-needed ground on the other main contender to take out the Mainland Football divi- sion one title, the 1964s. It all added up to mean that with just one game to go, the race to the finish couldn’t be much closer. Mid Canterbury United are still in the same spot on the lad- der that they’d been in for a while now – the top spot – but they are also still tied on points with the Halswell United 1964s. The two teams both have 14 wins, a loss and a draw to their names from their 16 outings this season, but the area where the Halswell side had an edge was on goal difference. And it was a de- cent edge, until Saturday. But Mid Canterbury United’s big 10-0 win over Nomads saw them make up almost all of the difference, making for an inter- esting final round which will de- cide who finished on top.
