Waimak United Football Club SENIOR MATCH DAY PROGRAM Saturday 4th August 2018 waimakunited.org.nz COMMENTS FROM THE CLUB Welcome all to another Weekend of Football. As the Twilight of the Season looms over us I think it is fair to say that the season has had its ups and downs and as the focus of many of our Junior and Youth Teams now starts to switches towards Tournaments in September and October I would like to take this opportunity to focus on the non playing part of our club and the thing that makes everything possible, our volunteers. I would like to thank all of the people who tirelessly give their time for the reward of seeing the players step over the white line and enjoy the beautiful game. Thank you for turning up to training when the pressure is on at work, thank you for washing the kit, planning the sessions and sending the texts and emails. Thank you for organising and turning up to fundraisers and all of the other things that you do on a weekly basis to make this club and your team possible. On that note we still have some season left to play so good luck to all of our team playing this weekend. Most of all enjoy the game, and enjoy the time you spend with your team. Win, Lose or Draw you are a team. The days when you lose are the days where you really get to know the character of the people around you in that team and that allows the team to grow. As Pele said ‘I am just and individual and no individual can win a game by himself’. Thank you and have a great weekend of football. Marcus Deedman Chairperson Waimak United Football Club Waimak go to France After temporarily losing my passport and having a frantic search around the house, I made my way to meet up with other Christchurch girls at the airport before boarding our flight up to Auckland. We had a shuttle take us to QBE Stadium and catch up with the rest of the squad before our final training session on NZ soil. We had a presentation by NZF to the parents and players, where the squad were given their playing kits and had an opportunity to thank those who have contributed to helping them achieve their footballing successes this far. After a night in Auckland, we began our long flight to France via Doha, the longest commercial flight (17h 15m). Arriving in Doha midnight, we were met by sweltering heat as we trudged across the tarmac, still half asleep before connecting to our next flight to Paris. After another 7 hours in the air, we were in France! An armed security team greeted the "NZ soccer team" as we made our way off the aircraft. The girls settled in and had another breakfast (I think our 5th of the trip already due to time zones) and lunch before getting the boots on and out on the grass. The 27° heat didn't last long, as black clouds rolled in and pea sized hail attempted to put a stop to our session. After 15min inside, the girls were back out and worked through the wet and trying conditions. On Sunday, we had a training morning and afternoon in 29° heat and another training the following morning. The girls had been great so far and we're looking forward to the game the next day against Mexico u20. Game Day vs Mexico! The girls were all pumped and looked ready for a rematch with majority of the squad that had beaten many of our squad 5-0 at the u17 World Cup in 2016. We started very well and did all but score, eventually succumbing to a goal from a set piece late in the second half to lose 1-0. Gabi played the final 15min of the game and was very effective getting in behind their defence, putting a cross agonisingly out of reach of our striker and creating a chance for herself that was blocked. Disappointing result, but happy coaches in terms of performance. Today saw our first day away from our base in Lisses, travelling to Paris for some sightseeing! After a recovery session in the gym, we jumped on a bus and saw the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Louvre and Arc de Triomphe. Some of the girls went off to find crepes, some to shop and some for more photos of this beautiful city. Tomorrow sees us travel 5 hours to the town of Brittany, where we will play the opening game of the tournament against the Netherlands. More updates in the upcoming days! Duncan Reed WAIMAK UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB MEN’S CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIP LEAGUE VS WESTERN AFC 2.30PM KICK OFF KENDALL PARK Coaches Comments Last week we played Parklands at Kendall park, the game was an even affair with both teams creating chances throughout the game. In the end though it was Waimak that broke the deadlock with a goal to Ben Hardy to give Waimak the deserved win and finally get the monkey off the back against our bogey team. This week we welcome Western FC to Kendall park for a game that both teams want to win but for different reasons. Western need the win to stay on top of the table where Waimak need to keep the good results coming to cement third place. With only a few games left we cannot let the standard’s slip after a couple of really good performances. Both teams like to play attacking football so it should be a good game to come down to watch. We look forward to seeing you all at the ground on Saturday with the Reserves playing Nomads United at 12.30 pm and the first team kicking off at 2.30pm. Unfortunately the result didn't follow a strong performance from the girls, and we found ourselves on the wrong end of a 3-1 score line. This meant we would finish third in the league, however the group has made strong progress over the past 2 years, finishing 5th last year to being title contenders this year going into the final round. Next year will see this strong group of young ladies mount a stronger push for the Women's Premier League title. This weekend we travel to Halswell to play in the Rita Fitzpatrick Semi-Final, with a thin squad and a few girls out will mean we have a tough challenge on our hands. For us, it is not to get caught up in the occasion of being in a semi-final, all of our girls have experienced this situation whether it be with the Pride or with the U17 group earlier this year and the key for us is to ensure we get the processes right and focus on our own performance through out this match.
