[email protected] www.soccerotago.co.nz [email protected] Don’t Blame us - we didn’t vote.. The lack of match results in recent Monday morning ODTs is disappointing - on more than one level.. Many lower grade players scour the small print to see scores, and just how well their rivals are doing. Once upon a time, as fairy tales start... There used to be Saturday Sports papers - sold at tea time, covering matches played that afternoon. Sports was a wonder of technology. Pre-computers of course. Monday morning League Tables and scores, also Rab existed but that was when Blair Davidson was a boy, and horses and carts made streets dangerous - or was it really just last year ? Footballsouth explains that they have been let down by their computer software. Promises have not been kept. Hence no scores in the ODT. Possibly the old results gathering information by telephone could be reverted to while software catches up, but that is not viable according to Operations Manager Pete Ritchie. Its just not a good look, when other sports can get results in, but we can’t manage to compete and promote the Worlds Greatest game. Still taking my Grump pills, its strange that ‘I’ have been harangued by frustrated players and supporters, regarding the lack of ODT Results, yet OM Ritchie claimed he had had no complaints from the general public. Tsk, tsk guys. Its no good moaning to me, and in assorted bars and bordellos, for goodness sake stick your spoke in, and show some concern - or else apathy will totally dumb down the game in general. Burgee Lights It Up At Tahuna

Our Prems played Mosgiel at Tahuna Park, with arguably Dunedin’s best striker Bit of of the last decade Aaron Burgess scoring 6 in a 6 2 win. Burgie Mosgiel look to have assembled a very strongstyle side this season, and nil all at half time nobody could anticipate the Burgess Blitz in the second half. We welcomed back Tim Myers from , his experience and composure on the ball will serve us well over the future weeks encounters. Fletchers played Braes and were transferred from Bayfield to Tahuna, winning 5 nil. ‘The Crab’ shifted from keeper to midfield, and put on a fine display. Captain Geordie Reid was strong at left back. Mark Burnett made his debut in goals and it was great to see him not conceded any. The team is very young, they train well, and are keen to learn, all is starting to look good for them this year. Eddie’s 3rds played Northern and got their first points of the season winning 2 1, a strong game by Ryan Eckoff. Our 4ths played Melchester at Bayfield, they got a bit of a lesson, but will get stronger as the season progresses, Jason picking up the player of the day award, with a fine game. Chids advises all who listens ,that they are unbeaten under his management, and have points to share to all the other teams at the club. Another great night of Friday night football, allowing players to support other teams and spend time with their families during the weekend. The Colts played Northern Masters at De Carle, losing 2 1, Craig Pledger was strong in midfield and put the ball on a plate for the front runners, but they squandered far to many clear chances and the result was a fair indication of the game. The Gerries played Roslyn Moas at Ellis, they were very disappointed with the way they played. Coach Loy not at all impressed. We lost 4 2, next weeks break cant come soon enough, then we can restart our season. Transylvanian Tony On Sunday the Prem ladies hosted Northern, playing into the wind first half, the girls struggled to get their slick passing game going, nil all at half time, stern words by the coaches at half time. Up 3 nil and feeling comfortable, Northern hit back, getting back to 3/2. We scored again and made it 4/2. Well deserved win for us. The Diamonds hosted the Swans in the Club derby, the youthful Diamonds winning 5 nil. Great games for the Swans from Tony Boomers wife Katherine. The club welcomes in Matt Stillwell from , great to see our link with that club continuing to pay dividends. On Saturday evening one of our sponsors John Harley from House of

Travel was present and presented the www.soccerotago.co.nz club with a very generous donation of a signed and framed Ryan Nelson World Cup football shirt, and 8 jackets to be used as subs jackets on a Saturday. We thank him for his kind generosity. The Culling Lounger

Peter Wal’s Prems put in an excellent close.. performance against reigning champions Cavvy. After conceding an early goal the lads got stuck and played some attractive football. For long periods an equaliser seemed an inevitable and just as it seemed it might never come Sam flighted in a great cross from a free-kick for James to time his run perfectly and head home a thoroughly deserved goal. The last 15 minutes were frenetic and both team s pushed for a winner that never came. POD Mikey was superb with along with Sam in the middle of the park Puyol and Frodo were great at the back, and Bradical ran himself to literally ran himself to stand still, making even Callum look quick at the end of the game. Whilst the first team were involved in a great game the Feltcher’s barely got out of 2nd gear. Heals aid out a game plan of keeping it simple and stressed the importance of keeping a high standrard but the lads failed to lift themselves against mediocre oppanats but still managed to win 6-1. The goals were scored by Andy Pandy (2), Nick (2), Jez the Dolphin and POD Fraser who was superb. The ABL lads racked up their first win out at Sunnyvale with goals from Euan and POD Billy. The key to success apparently Tim finally getting PV not to say anything at halftime. The Healthy Soils Whites kept their 100% record thanks to great first half against Varsity. The Scarfies fitness showed through in the second half but the lads were always in control winning 5-3. POD Rorrrry had an outstanding game Sam on the Gallop ...

[email protected] www.soccerotago.co.nz Page 6 [email protected] capped with a great goal, Benno got a James ... couple inclupping a spotty, Hayds was in stellar form and Ned is trying to claim an og as well. The Healthy Soils Blacks won 8-2 at altitude at Forrestor. A brick bat to the bright spark who decided to switch the pitches round, by the way. ADD got a hatrick, Brownie was simply outstanding, Todd got a screamer, Lyndon was bloody unlucky not to score. I fell asleep during Buzzers speech so I don’t know how POD was. The Bramwell Moller boys had a 3-0 loss to Melchester but are boasted by the news that POD Todd is going to play for the rest of season. They were also celebrating CR’s goal last week in Balcutter. The Originals played under lights on Friday night and were star struck in the first half conceding 4 goals. They fought back to make it 4-3 but let another one in as they went in search of an equaliser The Stallions fornicatingly bad apart from Sid who was fornicatingly good setting POD Honk up the goal in their 4-1 loss to Melchester. The Moas gave the Frotters a run for their money but ran out of steam losing 5-3 so those that attend training will be doing a few split 200’s and Burpee’s this week. PJ, Beagle and Graeme were the scorers The Womens Prem were below their best against a well organised and hard- working Varsity side but still managed to win 2-1. Sam scored two great goals and came close to a hatty, Georgia was electric when she came on. POD Bambi got stuck at the back. The Womens derby was won by the Whites with POD Solly getting ger first goal after 10years at the club, Cale Sunday and it was worth the wait, a long ranger screamer into the bottom corner. Gwen got the other a goal which definitely wasn’t her

first. www.soccerotago.co.nz For the Whites Mich came bloody close to scoring and put her body on the line trying but the only result was a trip to the Dr’s but she’s tough. POD went to Jenna who along with the rest of the team are improving every week. Markus Page 7 [email protected] [email protected]

The Varsity Premier Men’s side took on Spirit at the Cale in a very close encounter and thankfully we snuck away with a 1-0 victory. The team put in a fine performance creating numerous clear cut scoring opportunities and it’s not an exaggeration to say that we should have won by 4-5 goals. But we failed to capitalise and Spirit were always in with a sniff and as always Barry Gardiner was creating problems for us in the midfield. But thankfully in the 85th minute, Dom Higgins slotted home the winner after a very good performance off the bench. MOTM: Freshman Geordie Mansford who showed real class and effort on the left wing for such a young player – one to watch for the future! I’ve never been so stressed in all my life than watching that game – I now understand why you’re so bald Al Laidler! Varsity Seconds perfect start to the season ended in the Weekend as they could not finish off a spirited Northern Team. The Lads relinquished a 1-0, 2-1, and a 3-2 lead to end the game level following an 84min Northern equaliser. Although disappointed about the draw and knowing it was 2 points dropped rather than a point gained they can positively look forward to the Easter break knowing that a winning mentality is firmly being entrenched in the Squad. MOTM: Chris “Aussie” Bailey, the stalwart was a rock at the back and even popped one in to give us a 2-1 lead. 3rd team had the bye while the 4th team narrowly went down 5-4 to Roslyn. The Premier Women’s Kingsgate Womens Premier team had a hard fought Roslyn Wakari AFC 3 21062 4 7 game on a windy Dunedin Tech Prems 3 21063 3 7 Caledonian pitch against Northern Women - Prem 3 20197 2 6 Roslyn going down 2-1. We fought hard and created problems for Roslyn and when Sarah Boak levelled the score at 1-1 with about 10 minutes to go and with the wind behind our backs, I thought we were in with a chance of stealing the game from them. But to their credit, Roslyn immediately controlled the tempo of the game again after conceding and constructed a nice goal with a brilliant finish by Sam Muirhead. Well done to the girls for the performance! WOTM: Tess Barker with a solid and composed display at the back. The Senior Women’s team went out hungry for a win against Northern after two previous disappointing results. The girls started confidently, keeping composed on the ball and implementing the skills well practiced in training. The introduction of a 4-4-2 formation worked wonders for their opportunities, yet no one managed to capitalise in the 1st half. Northern were keen for a victory too, and put up a strong fight, but the Varsity back line kept it tight. A well deserved goal came in the 2nd half after dominating the Mattress Macris possession for most of the game, but was denied by the referee because the Northern keeper was down. Disappointment didn’t keep them from scoring though;

they were finally rewarded for www.soccerotago.co.nz their efforts late in the 2nd half when two goals came in quick succession. Goals: Sarah Young, Victoria Poindexter. WOTM couldn’t be decided as everyone played so well! Great girls! Mattress Varsity coach, keeping two reserves warm, on the bench. Sunday at the Caledonian ground. Caversham played Roslyn and came away with a 1-1 draw. it was a game where both teams thought they could have won the game and in the end both teams could have lost the game. A fine long range effort from darren gave us the lead but we weren’t good enough to hang on and now have a mountain to climb next week against tech. The biggest talking point to come out of this game was the standard of refereeing which for such a high profile game just wasn’t up to the standard expected, and even had the roslyn faithful on the sidelines scratching their heads in disbelief ( and they were getting 85% of his decisions), probably not up to a game of this standard. The seconds played green island and have still to register a point with a 5-2 loss. still more work to be done. There were wins for the god squad, phoenix and cavy masters and a loss for the smegs The Hammer

A better effort from Spirit on Saturday but no cigar, going down 1-nil to University at the Cale from where incidentally every effort was made to shift the game to the new stadium thingy with the roof on after the Cale’s lights went out about 4-15pm. If there were any doubts that Spirit is a Guest young team catch this. Speaker We trundled off to the Starters Bar I think it’s called for the after-match with the scarfie lads and half our team got kicked out for being under-age. Still, saves on the POD shout I suppose. Just in case you don’t read any further I’d better mention that we have the Thistle 75th Jubilee down here at Queens Birthday weekend and if this programme net spreads wider than the Thistle committee’s advertising net then interested people can contact the club for info at www.thistleafc.co.nz it’s shaping up the be a boomer with Ricky The All-White Phoenix Herbert as guest speaker. For those who read on, Thistle in fact got their first win after their return to Southland premier footy when they beat Southend United 5-3 on the ILT Turf on Saturday. Champs Old Boys staved of Waihopai 2-1 at Surrey Park (yes we still play on the famous paddock…) to keep their competition lead and highly rated Queens Park had a devil off a job shaking off Gore Wanderers at Gore 2-1. For the second week in a row local harness reinsman Jonny Cox did the job for Park with a customary goal. Totnam

While we didn’t play pretty, we are pleased with the 3 point return after the 3.1 win over Green Island side with a ‘never say die’ attitude. A scrappy start, with neither side allowed to settle in any form of game plan, Darren Mills pounced on some loose ball outside the GI box worked himself a couple yards of space and neatly chipped the keeper, with what is being argued by team management as a poor cross… That aside, Mills gave us the start we needed as we seemed to be gaining a little dominance in the early part of the match. A cheeky series of knock downs flicks and short passing down the middle of the pitch ended with Matt Small strolling thru the GI defense to slide home the second just a few minutes later. We then found ourselves in unfamiliar territory of being three up in 20 mins when again punishing a GI error, with Matt small receiving a nice pass from the GI keeper at the top of the box, Matt did pretty well to make it look difficult, but toed it home for a brace, and sadly enough to get him MOTM. The Island responded with a goal a few minutes later, as we seemed to go off our game. A wipers right to left switch ball should have been straight forward to clear (unless your 36 yrs young) found a couple lads lining up for an exposed Keeper. Neatly finished, 3-1. In fairness this game could ended up 6-1 to us or 4-3 to GI, as both sides were guilty of inaccuracy in front of goal. Another enjoyable contest with GI, played in fantastic spirit, now if they could just something about the WAGS!! J

The Prem Women travelled to Sunnyvale to play Green Island. We were off to a bad start before the game even kicked off, with our first choice goal keeper on holiday and our second choice had the flu. With no volunteers for goals, Laura Aitken was picked and gets a special mention for standing up to the challenge. On to the game, Green Island took the lead, but as in previous weeks we always looked dangerous on the counter attack and equalised when Kathryn Kennedy broke through and slotted home. Shortly afterwards Kathryn could have had a second, but the ball stuck in a large puddle on the goal line and the keeper got back. Again Green Island took the lead with a good long shot, just before half time we equalised when Ellen MacKenzie’s well placed shot found the back of the net. In the first twenty minutes of the second half, it was a pretty even game. Then we lost a bit of momentum www.soccerotago.co.nz and Green Island scored two more in the last twenty minutes. The age groups involved are 98/99 Boys and Girls, 95/96 B & G. Talent Development (TD) was a major topic of discussion at a recent meeting I attended in Auckland, as both the Football Development Manager and CEO. By October this year we hope to have an aligned policy, curriculum and structure for TD throughout NZ. This will involve Regional Talent Centres run by the Federations feeding players into National Centres run by the NZF, creating pathways for the Talent Perform players and Talent Excel players as defined in the National Framework The Perform players want to be the best they can be within NZ, the pinnacle being National League level - the Excel players have the capability of playing professionally, and representing the NZ National team. Other topics that were on the agenda for the Auckland meetings were Cost Recovery for NZF Programmes, Marketing and Sponsorship, Referee Development, Schools Football and Game Development (Dwayne Woolliams, formerly in charge of the Small Whites programme, has just been appointed as the NZF Game Dev Manager).. More on these aspects later. Have an enjoyable Easter!! Bill Chisholm

‘Ask the Physio’ Do I use ice or a water bottle on an acute injury? This is a question that is asked many times. Ice is the best way to manage an acute injury in the early stages. The ice along with compression and elevation will assist with the swelling. Ice should be applied for 20 minutes every 3-4 hours in the first 24 hours – this may mean getting up in the night to apply ice! Use a wet towel to cover the ice so there is no direct contact with the skin. Re-usable plastic ice blocks are useful to have in the fridge. If the swelling persists contact your physio. The 2nd Team A week of training paid off as the 2nds had a good win over Caversham. The back four played solid and set a good base for some attractive football in the second half. Two goals to Ersin, one each for Mike, Quentin and Tom. Final score.5-3 Rory Crow The Third Team A highly competitive game against Roslyn was lost by an odd goal 1-2. In conditions that favoured the sliding tackle, both sides took time to adapt. In the first half Green Island got off to a good start with a well taken goal by Zane Riordan. Roslyn came back into the game and equalised. A ding-dory battle in midfield ensued. The 2nd half began and Roslyn took ascendency and Green Island lost composure with Roslyn taking advantage to take the lead. To Green Island’s credit the team worked hard to get back into the game and produced several chances without success. Dan Burton, in his first appearance for Green Island produced an excellent performance and was MOM. Paul Hendrik

The Grants Braes boys were competitive all day making it difficult to get control of the game. Valuable lessons were learnt today by our young boys and we need to create more chances to get the results we are Japan looking for. Woodsie and Dave fought well but Louis Jackson had all the opportunities today and deserved his MOM. We will get better as the boys get used to playing senior football week to week Final score 1-1 Graeme Darling. The Green Island Premier Womens Team The first win for our young team but it was a battle in wet conditions. The first half was evenly matched with both teams scoring. Half time 1-1. Stephanie’s pace up front impressed and a solid defence enabled Charley Kerry to strike two superb goals. Final score 4-2 MOM Stephanie Lee. Keith McFadyen 2nd Division Women’s Gold The girls played hard but let Mosgiel get on top of them in the first half. They dug in, in the second half and kept them out. Our keeper had a good game. Great goals from Samara Scott and Samara Kelly to take the win. 2-1 Paul Kelly. Samara’s Gremlins played really well, never stopped trying but lost 0-3 to . Player of the day Hayley for good throw ins. Samara Kelly Averley Ask the physio. Will strapping weaken my ankle? Strapping joints in sport has been well researched. Strapping has been shown to be of value in preventing ankle injuries. Ankle strapping is very common in the American NBL and in some teams it is compulsory. Weak ankle joints after sprains can either be due to an over

stretched ankle ligament or poor balance. Ankle www.soccerotago.co.nz strapping is important in assisting the return to sport as it will provide some support but the strapping also helps with balance. Recovery from ankle strains must include a balance exercise programme. Long-term use of strapping appears to have no adverse effects however many people become allergic to the tape. Therefore functional ankle braces are used. So if you feel your ankle is weak get it assessed by your local physiotherapist. Dusty Quinn MMPty Manipulative Physiotherapist.

After last weeks tough encounter, table topping Tech awaited at Tahuna. The boys played well in the first half and with Regan & Tim firing and flying down the flanks the game was nicely balanced with both sides creating chances. However as half time approached the winds of change were blowing in and along with a cold southerly front we hoped it would unleash a Mosgiel Maelstrom- however a Tech typhoon took over and ripped us to shreds with a frenetic opening 20 minutes in the 2nd half which coincided with Tech taking off and us falling asleep. We found ourselves down the barrel of a rout with Tech & Burgie in particular on fire , 0-5, with 20 to go. To our credit we dug deep and Reggie unleashed a rocket and then Jordan scored again to bring some measure of pride back to the scoreline but Tech scored again to take the game 2-6. Andys 2nds travelled south to take on Clutha and the Div. 2 AJ Grant, Playgear team played well with Davie B & Dunedin Technical 2nds 33009 2 7 9 Curtis controlling the midfield, University 2nds 3210153 127 solid performances from Ryan Northern 2nds 32109 6 3 7 Roslyn Wakari AFC 2nds 32019 4 5 6 McGarry & Sean McCauley had Balclutha 21019 4 5 3 us camped in Cluthas half, but Mosgiel 2nds 21013 3 0 3 despite our efforts we couldn’t Grants Braes 2nds 31027 9 -23 break through. The last 3 minutes were played in Cluthas box, but we couldn’t edge past the Tractor Boys final result 1-1, which left coach Andy happy with our overakll comittment and effort whilst bemoaning the finishing. The ABL’s played a very strong Melchester side and despite losing 2-0 we did enough to win the game, the difference being Melchester took the opportunity afforded them. Matt Kelly & Mike Barnes played superb in the niddle of the park, Young Keagan had a top game in the centre of Defence. United oldies played top side Grants Braes Black and lost 2-0, being 2- 0 at h/t and playing into the wind- we were Look familiar .. ? looking at a hiding, but Ryan shored up their danger man and we hit the cross bar twice, Man in goals - Justin Boyne, the man with dodgy groin, played well despite not being abe to kick. Masters Oldies also played the other table topping Braes side and with Chris in top form he bagged a hat trick, Prec got a pen, and also Whitty , Chop, Forbsie scored to register a7-0 win. Stevie missed a pen. Gordy was in goals for our 3rd goalie in as many matches - Kelly & Nevin were rock solid and gave us a good platform in bringing the ball up from defence. The women beat the Island 6-1with goals being scored by Liza (2) Kate(2) Amber & sally. Nev
