Hamilton are one of the title after enduring horrific runs of form. The pair have just three wins to show between them and suffered favourites though and a win here could put them back on the top of the table so fourth-placed Central are in for further punishment last weekend, Papatoetoe falling 4-1 to Norwest while Fencibles were handed an 8-0 a real test. thumping by Glenfield. If Fencibles do not claim the points in this one then it seems they can all but kiss their NRFL status goodbye. The hosts will be favourites as they are sharing first place with Glenfield but Springs are in outstanding form after stringing together five wins on the trot so an upset is very Remarkably, Claudelands’ sharing of the points with Three Kings was their first draw of the season and they will be much a realistic outcome. keen to prove that was just a blip. With two of their closest rivals – Glenfield and Forrest Hill – playing each other, this is an excellent opportunity for the leaders to open up some ground on at least one of the chasers so they Glenfield Rovers vs East Coast Bays need to make sure they take full advantage. The last time Lynn-Avon won was back in the eighth round. That result took them back to the top but only by the slimmest of margins (they’ve scored one more goal than Eastern Suburbs). With Hamilton just a point behind, Rovers therefore need to keep winning This is without doubt the game of the round and could have big ramifications in the race for the title. With four and games like this against bottom-half sides must be three-pointers. The form book often goes on the window teams genuinely in the running, this is the closest and most exciting title chase in the women’s game for years and in derbies though. there will be a string of other tense encounters as the finale approaches. With Claudelands likely to beat Lynn- Avon, each of these sides will be in great need of the points so the action is sure to be fiercely fought. With a clear top two now having emerged, third-placed Ellerslie are facing an uphill battle to haul strugglers Onehunga-Mangere in the previous round and are now precariously positioned with only Lynn- themselves into the promotion reckoning and securing a win here is therefore vital. But the same can also be said of title rivals North Shore so there is not much of a silver lining to the cup mathematically they still have every chance as Papatoetoe are only two points ahead. The manner of the 4-1 loss will also have concerned leagues so they will be pleased to be sitting safely in mid-table, seemingly free of any relegation woes and with coach Paul Temple as Shore pride themselves on their defending and have conceded fewer goals than any other a chance of pushing for the top four. Te Atatu made light of the lengthy trek with a 2-1 win in the corresponding men’s team in the entire NRFL. They will need to go back to their miserly ways against a side that has little trouble fixture and Fury will be hoping to do the same to them this time. finding the net. They must bounce back quickly from that heart-breaking defeat though as vs positioning can count for little in the cup last weekend, needing extra time and a double from Sanni Issa to get past they are fighting for promotion with at least four other sides. Fencibles are one of those teams so this is a real Conference side Waitemata. Takapuna will have their tails up after earning just their second win of the season, albeit six-pointer. over bottom-placed Ngaruawahia, but the quality of the likes of Issa should get Mangere home. North Force vs Albany United Tauranga City United vs Mt Albert-Ponsonby Kamo Sports Park | Sunday 5 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Ben Hill Links Avenue | Sunday 5 July | Kick-off:2.45pm | Referee: Andrew Lamberth Assistant Referees: Michael Badham, Torres Chang Assistant Referees: Paul Shakes, Brett Willis It’s been an outstanding couple of weeks for North Force, who have notched 5-0 wins in successive games – over Tauranga’s pleasing season continued with an upset win over Premier League Melville in the cup but they must be vs Claudelands and Lynn-Avon respectively – and are now in second place. Their recent net-busting antics are sure vs careful not to let those knockout exploits distract them from the task at hand in the league. With North Shore and to have the Albany defence worried, although the visitors are in decent form themselves after also notching Forrest Hill opening up a gap at the top, it’s going to be difficult for any other side to break into the promotion spots back-to-back wins. and Tauranga will need to embark on a great run of form to do so.
