WE ARE NORTH SHORE

SATURDAY 10th JUNE 2017 – KICK OFF 3PM NRFL – RD13 OFFICIAL MATCH DAY PROGRAMME OPPOSITION: WAITEMATA FC TOM SPEERS Head Coach Would like to welcome you all back to the Hill today, seems like a while since we have been at our home ground so are looking forward to it. Would also like to welcome Bob and his Waitemata team who will be confident after picking up a good point against Melville last Saturday.

We have not been performing at our best recently, with small mistakes costing us and not wanting to use cliches, but 'simply not getting rub of the green' at the moment.

We understand this is football, and the boys picked themselves up and gave a professional performance against Claudelands, getting back to basics and doing all the small things right and putting in a solid display

We are looking to bounce back in the league today so get behind the boys, make some noise and fill the hill!

HEAD COACH ASST. COACH ASST. COACH MANAGER Tom SPEERS Ben WALL Tom BRAY Bill LISSINGTON DARRYL PETHERICK Club Chair, NSU

I know everyone is acutely aware of the grounds issues facing the peninsula's football community. I can't believe 5 years has passed since we started to address this issue. This morning we were pleased to host some of the Devonport Takapuna Community Board at Allen Hill, in an effort to secure their support towards providing long term solutions.

This week I am going to use this opportunity to update you on ground and funding allocation progress. Hopefully all our club members saw the 'push' we have given this topic during the week.

The council's consultation process is drawing to a close and shortly that community board will be asked to make a decision on where they want the 2+ million dollar investment in our area. What is proposed is an upgrade to the Allen Hill surface to a hybrid pitch (combination of artificial and natural grass) - plus the installation of a 3/4 pitch plus lights. This will significantly increase the 'playing hours' available to us, as well as the playing conditions available to all members.

There are so many aspects to this, from the supply and demand analysis conducted, that quite frankly initially misrepresented grounds around us, to our growing participation numbers, and travelling to 'home' games in Albany for so many families.

What it all boils down to is we are over due for funding allocation. We all know the benefits of active recreation for our kids, and those of us that are kids at heart. If an increase in the hours of play available to us doesn't occur now, alternative of reducing and capping our playing numbers is untenable. How on earth are we going to choose who can't play football?

I ask for your support - as part of the oldest football club in , with playing numbers 1000 strong. Go to our Facebook page and start there. https://www.facebook.com/North-Shore-United-AFC-205585653228899/

The birth of Waitemata AFC started in Ranui. A club called Western United was formed headed by Tommy Russell, Reg Matthews and Frank Lowe The Ranui community is steeped in Rugby but the new club was formed in 1959 with junior teams followed by Senior teams the next year. In 1960 the senior club came to life with a gala held at Cooks Paddock in Swanson Road. Floats were made and travelled along Swanson Rd from Redwood Park to the new grounds at Cooks Paddock. In the same year a float was entered in the Auckland Anniversary show at Western Springs and a stall was set up with table football on offer.

In the early to mid 60s Western earned promotion to the 2nd Division. In 1962 they won the Dacre Cup the 2nd Division Knockout Competition. Promotion to the 1st Division was achieved by winning the 2nd Division in 1963 and retaining the Dacre Cup. In 1964 Western reached the semifinals of the Northern Section, losing 2–3 to Mt Wellington in extra time. Ken Armstrong the legendary Mt Wellington Coach reported in the NZ Herald that the support and singing from the Western fans was akin to English Football fans. Through those years at one time 38 games were played without defeat and the feat was reported in the NZ Herald. In the early years a large number of players were in the NZ Air Force based at Whenuapai, plus many British & Dutch immigrant players and the odd Kiwi. The club was lucky with a lot of outstanding players and administrators. The players included Gary Eckles, Harry Precious, who was an Auckland Rep player, Ken Conway, & John Summers. Goalkeepers were well to the fore in this list & included Denis Wells, Ron Wheaton, Derek Rawlinson, Gerry Keyning & Nick Bakker. Youngsters Bernie Hunter, Howard Bough and Eddy Verbieson maintained the high standard and kept the reputation of the club at a high level. The season to date has been excellent. We have shown we have what it takes to be in the promotion race, which is no less than where DUNN #1 North Shore deserves to be. Recent results haven’t gone our way, but a true champion will take a knock, or three, and get back up every time. I am confident with the guidance of Tom and the staff we will be strong prospects to be in that chase. Its’s seldom you get a tight knit group of players and that reflects in the way we play the game, which is credit to the hard work Tom has put into the foundation of our squad. The senior players in the side including the captains also play an integral part in this, which is very important when chasing promotion. Allen Hill is a very tough place to arrive and depart with three points. Having said that, you only need to look at the results throughout the season to recognise no team is an easy beat. Waitemata will be up for the occasion having come off a loss in the cup, but I’m confident Dave and the boys will have this one taken care of.

We started the season on fire, with some very impressive performances and results. We've had a little bit of a tricky spell in the last few weeks, but I believe this is something that every team experiences within a campaign. With such an impressive win on Monday in the Chatham Cup and the opportunity to put a run together in that, we have the chance to use that positive to bounce back to our early form and finish the season strong. We're now in a chasing pack, and if we can build momentum and string a number of results together, the pressure will mount on the teams above us. I believe we have the players, management and character to

LANGWORTHY #7 LANGWORTHY stick with the leading two and put pressure on them. It's great to be involved with an ambitious club and a team that's fighting at the top, there is a long way to go still and a lot of points to play for and I believe we can challenge for those top spots. ROUND 10 & 11 REVIEW #WeGoAgain

The Northern Derby you could say, boasted two very strong teams but unfortunately for Shore, the Coast weathered the storm and took advantage when they could. We had a lot of the ball, channeling down the left in Langworthy who had a few chances down the flank. We knew it wasn’t going to be our day, when against the run of play, they picked up a penalty and gained the lead heading into the break. We came out strong but weren’t able to grab the equaliser and not far from time Coast grabbed a second goal which sealed the win and took all 3 points back up North. 2-0 to HIBISCUS.

This was billed as the pick of the bunch for DIVISION 1 fixtures and it didn’t disappoint. These teams look like playing out for the last spot of promotion (after Springs’ inevitable first spot) and it was end to end right from the kick off. Again Ross Langworthy, Fahy & Ngadela (who have all been on fire) were linking up well with Langworthy getting in 3 chances only to be thwarted by their goalkeeper at the last moment. The deadlock was finally broken when we played it down the left with a chance from Langworthy rebounding off a defender and hitting the back of the net. Manukau fought back valiantly and scored 3 quick goals to head into the half 3-1 up. Second half again was end to end but only one goal was scored at the end, Langworthy running on to a back pass and it hitting him off the chest and into the net. 3-2 to Manukau.
