RE: Elementary Musical Instruments Report

Attached is the overview of musical instruments in the elementary schools of the Lowell Public Schools. In addition, each schools updated inventory is also included. As you will see by the report and following inventories, many schools have instruments and equipment that are not in good condition and many years old. Numerous teachers have sought out additional resources for their classrooms through Donorschoose.org, Adopt a classroom and occasionally, a private donation.

Elementary Schools Music Inventory Overview

Through music education, students become fluent in the language of music as artistic, intellectual, and cultural expression. Performing, creating, and responding to music provide means for development and growth. As stated in the Every Student Succeeds Act, music is considered one of the many subjects that are part of a well-rounded education, providing all students access to an enriched curriculum and educational experience.

Attached are the individual inventories from all elementary schools. Inventories were first created in April 2013. In viewing the inventories, you will see there is a wide array of musical instruments and resources throughout the elementary schools of the Lowell Public Schools. In an effort to organize the vast collection of instruments and resources, I’ve grouped them into categories consisting of:

 non-pitched percussion instruments- o including Latin, African, Cambodian o Small hand percussion instruments/Latin, African, Cambodian

 pitched percussion instruments - o Orff – , and , o o Boomwackers o Keyboards/digital

 Recorders • Ukuleles

 Guitars,  Orchestral – violins, violas, cellos  Multicultural instruments.

All schools have an assortment of non-pitched percussion instruments including - , bongos, , , guiros, small hand percussion instruments - sand blocks, jingle bells, rhythm sticks and triangles that range in age from fairly new to now 25+ years old. In addition, all schools have a variety of drums ranging from full sets of World Drums at the McAuliffe and Murkland schools to a mishmash of individual African and World drums (, turbano, talking and ngoma drums) at the other elementary schools, many of which are in fair to poor condition.

In addition to non-pitched percussion instruments, there is a hodgepodge of pitched percussion instruments including Orff Instruments - xylophones, metallophones and glockenspiels, in varying configurations. The vast majority of these instruments are very old (25+ years) and in poor /very poor condition. Some schools have Boomwackers, lightweight, hollow, color-coded, plastic tubes, tuned to musical pitches by length, that are fairly new and in good condition These instruments are members of the percussion family and are relatively inexpensive to purchase. Additionally, some schools also have started acquiring bells.

There are a number of schools that have recorders. Several music teachers introduce the recorder in 2nd/3rd grade and students continue playing the recorder through fourth grade. There has been some confusion over the years regarding the recorder. The Mass. Fine Arts Curriculum frameworks standard three states “Students will play instruments, alone and with others, to perform a varied repertoire of music.” The standard does not specify which instrument(s) students will play. All elementary music teachers provide their students the opportunity to play a variety of instruments based on what is available to them.

Not every elementary school has a or keyboard. Many of the pianos/keyboard in the elementary schools are in poor condition. None of the elementary schools have large numbers of keyboards available for group instruction. The pianos and/or keyboards are used predominantly by the teacher(s) to accompany the students.

There are a few specialty programs unique to individual schools. The McAuliffe school has guitars which are now over 25 years old. The Murkland school has both world drums and a set of Cambodian Pinpeat Ensemble instruments that were gifted to the LPSD through a partnership and grant with Middlesex Community College. There is a second Pinpeat Ensemble at the Stoklosa Middle School. The McAuliffe school also has a set of world drums also fairly new and in good condition.

Over the years, many schools have purchased individual assorted multicultural instruments including kokirikos, shekeres, buffalo drums and zithers that are all in relatively good condition.

While all schools have a mixed bag of resources and supplementary materials, not all elementary schools have choral risers. Additionally, sound systems and related equipment (microphones, cables, speakers) vary greatly from school to school as do additional electronics including CD/DVD/cassette and MP3 players.

An initiative to purchase music textbooks was started many (20+) years ago, but was never completed throughout the elementary schools. As a result, a few schools have partial sets of music textbooks with teacher editions and recordings that are over 20 years old and no longer available.

In meeting with the elementary music teachers for professional development over the past few years, the common concern from the teachers is funding for classroom instruments and equipment as well as loosing music classrooms to accommodate other programs within the building. Most elementary music teachers receive anywhere from $200/yr. to $500/yr. When teaching over 500 students in each school, in some cases, that is less than $1/student. If school principals invested in sets of word drums, ukuleles, various hand percussion instruments, the music programs at each elementary school could flourish for many years.
