Area 2 Twice Tolled Tales TWICE TOLLED TALES April 2 Greetings from your Area 2 Board! When was the last time you challenged yourself? When was the last time you really pushed yourself or your choir to improve as handbell musicians? To learn a new handbell skill or technique? To ring that next level of music? To ring beyond the notes on the page? To move, create and share beautiful music on handbells? Our 2016 summer event, Challeng(R)ing will provide you with an opportunity to do just that…Challenge Yourself! Whether you are a full choir, individual ringer or director looking to help your choir advance, Challeng(R)ing is for you. One day, two locations, three songs, Intermediate or Advanced ringing tracks, and fellowship with other handbell musicians from Area 2. What a wonderful way to spend a summer day! Registration materials are available in this issue. Please share with your choirs and fellow handbell musicians and join in the fun. How will you challenge yourself this summer? Spring workshops are also taking shape around the area. Check our website and Facebook page for more details. Interested in hosting a workshop? Contact Bea Mooney at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you at an Area 2 workshop and/or Challeng(R)ing in 2016! Happy Ringing! Jill Fedon Jill Fedon April 2016 2016 April TWICE TOLLED TALES Area 2 Twice Tolled Tales . Please Forward and Share! Attention Directors – don’t forget to forward all Area 2 emails and Twice Tolled Tale issues to your ringers. As members of your choir, they are also members of Area 2. Help keep them in the Area 2 loop and encourage them to be active participants in their handbell community. National Seminar 2016 being held in Area 2! Dear Members of Area 2, Handbell Musicians of America is coming to Rochester! From July 12-16, 2016, approximately 500 handbell directors, ringers, composers, educators, and industry representatives will be at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Rochester Convention Center. Registrants will participate in numerous classes and workshops, hear concert performances by some of the best handbell ensembles in the U.S., and enjoy opportunities for networking and fellowship. To make this event a success we need your help. We strive to provide an active, hands-on experience in our classes and workshops. This requires numerous sets of handbells and additional sets of handchimes, as well as foam padding and other miscellaneous equipment. We are asking you to help us by loaning your handbells or handchimes to the Guild for the event. All equipment is covered for loss or damage under the Handbell Musicians of America Inland Marine Insurance policy while it is in the care, custody, and control of a Guild representative or volunteer. In addition, any organization or individual that loans a full set of handbells or handchimes to Seminar will receive a one-year membership (or extension of their current membership) in Handbell Musicians of America. Also, each organization or individual will receive two (2) complimentary tickets to the one of the event’s evening feature concerts (you may choose which.) To learn more about the event and to see a list of concerts, visit http://seminar.handbellmusicians.org/about-seminar/concerts/ If you are able to assist us by loaning equipment, please contact our Area 2 Local Liaison and Equipment Manager for the event, Jackie Anderson at [email protected] or 585-703-2381. We deeply appreciate your support of Handbell Musicians of America and Seminar 2016 and hope to see you in Rochester in July! • Instructions for Caroling Safely
Why Should We Sing? Greetings and thank you for downloading this resource. We hope that it will give you ideas, guidelines, and an easy jumpstart to “fill the night with music and light.” Your presence in the world will help others see the light of hope and the music of good will for all people in this challenging time. This is why we sing. Whether you are worshiping online or in adapted in-person gatherings, singing in enclosed spaces is still not advised. So what do we do when it isn’t safe to sing inside? We take it outside! Let us reclaim and amplify this beloved tradition of caroling, bringing more hope, love, joy, and peace to the world. Who Should Sing? Everyone! This could be an endeavor led by members of your choir and musical ensembles. Perhaps they are leaders of small groupings of people from your church, ensuring that everyone gets a chance to participate and have solid, confident leadership. If you have a larger choir, perhaps smaller groupings of singers from the choir are sent out to different parts of your community or member’s homes (especially those that will not be able to get out themselves). You may have already-established groups of people who meet for small group fellowship and study and they could form a caroling group. The booklets and recordings are set up in such a way that even households with no prior caroling experience could engage in singing together for their own enjoyment. www.worshipdesignstudio.com/carol2020 1 How Shall We Sing? Safety Guidelines While we all continue to yearn for a sense of normalcy and to be able to celebrate this important part of the Christian Year, we also take our responsibility to “love thy neighbor” very seriously.

THE CHURCH BELLS OF SURREY, THERE are in the county of Surrey 388 churches and chapels, containing, as far as I am able to ascertain, 1030 bells. These figures do not pretend to perfect accuracy, as there may have been a few churches recently opened for Divine worship of which I have not heard ; and again, I have not perfect information as to the number of bells in each of the new churches. In default of information, I have credited each church with one bell only. Of the above churches and chapels 147 only are of older foundation than the present century. They contain 694 bells, the dates of which are as under : Pre-reformation bells ... ... 22 1570 to 1600 ... ... ... 13 1 60 1 to 1700 , ... ... ... 134 1701 to 1800 260 1801 to 1883 250 In addition, there are 15 bells whose date it is impossible to fix with accuracy. It is almost needless to state that the 76 The Church Bells of Surrey. remaining 336 bells required to make the grand total of 1030 are all dated in the — The Church Bells of Surrey, yy sequence, so far as can be ascertained or reasonably surmised, and grouping together those bells which by Identity of stamps or lettering show signs of affinity.
