Keller The purpose of this study was to identify new trends and innovations as regards the orchestral percussion section between the years of 1960-2009. In order identify possible trends this study examined 87 compositions written for orchestra between 1960 and 2009. The necessary historical background identified a number of trends already in use by 1960. Among those were increasing calls for special effects, the introduction and inclusion of the marimba and vibraphone in orchestral music, an increased demand for difficult and important mallet parts, general increases in the size and force of the percussion section, and an increased demand for expanded timpani range and tuning. Scores were examined for those trends as well for new or unusual playing techniques, the prevalence of multi-percussion setups in the orchestra, detail of composer instruction and percussion ensemble in the orchestra. Changing opinions and attitudes regarding percussion which occurred during the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century were also documented. The results indicate that a number of changes took place in orchestral percussion writing from 1960-2009. General findings show increased demands on the percussion sections of today compared to the percussion sections of the past in both number of instruments and players. Also noted was an increase in composition for unpitched instruments (i.e. cymbals, triangles, tam-tams, drums, etc.) in a “pitched” way. Additionally, there was an increased prevalence of “multi-percussion” setups in orchestral ensembles as well as more frequent and unusual stick requests made by composers for the various instruments. Some compositional historical precedents were also documented, most notably the technique of bowing crotale and vibraphone bars. New directions in the composition of timpani parts were also discovered, 5 including calls for extreme ranges of tuning, extensive tuning, necessity of tuning gauges and extended techniques such as the glissando. In the final analysis, this study demonstrated conclusively the increased importance of the percussion section to the orchestra. The study also demonstrated that many recent trends are likely to continue into the future. Knight, Professor of Ethnomusicology Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, © 2015, Rev. 2017 Introduction The year 2015 marks the beginning of the second century for Hornbostel-Sachs, the venerable classification system for musical instruments, created by Erich M. von Hornbostel and Curt Sachs as Systematik der Musikinstrumente in 1914. In addition to pursuing their own interest in the subject, the authors were answering a need for museum scientists and musicologists to accurately identify musical instruments that were being brought to museums from around the globe. As a guiding principle for their classification, they focused on the mechanism by which an instrument sets the air in motion. The idea was not new. The Indian sage Bharata, working nearly 2000 years earlier, in compiling the knowledge of his era on dance, drama and music in the treatise Natyashastra, (ca. 200 C.E.) grouped musical instruments into four great classes, or vadya, based on this very idea: sushira, instruments you blow into; tata, instruments with strings to set the air in motion; avanaddha, instruments with membranes (i.e. drums), and ghana, instruments, usually of metal, that you strike. (This itemization and Bharata’s further discussion of the instruments is in Chapter 28 of the Natyashastra, first translated into English in 1961 by Manomohan Ghosh (Calcutta: The Asiatic Society, v.2). The immediate predecessor of the Systematik was a catalog for a newly-acquired collection at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels. The collection included a large number of instruments from India, and the curator, Victor-Charles Mahillon, familiar with the Indian four-part system, decided to apply it in preparing his catalog, published in 1880 (this is best documented by Nazir Jairazbhoy in Selected Reports in Ethnomusicology – see 1990 in the timeline below).

He joined the VSO this season in September of 2019. He grew up in Kansas City, and his main instrument is the trumpet. He studied music education and conducting, and has worked with orchestras in Canada, the United States, Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic, Chile, and many other exotic places. The conductor keeps the orchestra in time and together. The conductor serves as a messenger for the composer. It is their responsibility to understand the music and convey it through movements so clearly that the musicians in the orchestra understand it perfectly. Those musicians can then send a unified vision of the music out to the audience. Conductors usually beat time with their right hand. This leaves their left hand free to show the various instruments when they have entries (when they start playing) or to show them to play louder or softer. Most conductors have a stick called a “baton”. It makes it easier for people at the back of large orchestras or choirs to see the beat. Other conductors prefer not to use a baton. A conductor stands on a small platform called a “rostrum”. To be a good conductor is not easy. It is not just a question of giving a steady beat. A good conductor has to know the music extremely well so that they can hear any wrong notes. They need to be able to imagine exactly the sound they want the orchestra to make.

Lindberg’s composer profile has evolved from his early edgy modernism, “carved in stone” to use his own words, to the softer and more sonorous idiom that he has embraced recently, suggesting a spiritual kinship with late Romanticism and the great masters of the early 20th century. On the other hand, in the same comment Lindberg also mentioned features that have remained constant in his music, including his penchant for drama going back to the early defiantly modernistKraft (1985).
